Man, I've been banging my head against the wall on a trace elliott 7 band eq I got from Goodwill. Would not come on for nothing! And your advice on the power jack was spot on. I tested the jack, and it wasn't crossing over to let the battery work. Took out the jack and soldered the pads across on the board for a test, and the leds kicked on! Thank you Sir!!!!!
Great video. Just the basics, but good n thorough. I have not looked yet, but Id love to watch some advanced tips or a walkthrough of a diagnosis and repair, again great & thank you
I have a Boss Dyna drive and whenever I have it connected in my pedal chain, the volume and overall signal is really diminished. When I take the pedal out of my chain, everything sounds great. I tried using some deoxidizer spray, but that doesn't seem to help much. Suggestions?
Mine smells a little “burnt” but still works fine. It’s an 80s EQ pedal. Any idea why it might smell like that? I plugged a 9v PSA 120 in it, you think that screwed it up?
My buddy plugged in the wrong adapter to my Boss MZ2, now it seems fried. I wish they put fuses in these things (?), but what could I test and possibly replace. Great video, thanks.
Hi, I have a boss super chorus CH-1 that keeps cutting out when i try to use it. The insulating sheet in front of the circuit board is missing and so is the washer on the external side of the input jack. Any ideas?? Thanks
when i plug my pedal in, it doesn't have the pedal's tone and it just sound's like my amp with lot's of buzz. can someone help. is this a problem with having two different cable types? i bought it brand new yesterday. lol
@@vincentmoncerate9575 i know the potential cause of how it happened. i put the in and out cable in the wrong way while turning it on but i wouldn't expect that to break it necessarily.
Hey I ve a boss noise suppressor. The problem is that there's no sound of my guitar with pedal turned on.and with pedal off the sound comes slowly ascending after four five seconds first with distorted kind of sound and then clean.i tried cleaning the parts and everything seems ok with the cables board and the jack sockets.please help
My bd2 works in serial I mean when its on let the previous and after pedals to be engage and send signal but when its off all the signals are cut off, any advice? Thank you.
Hey james, I have boss BD-2 as well, in another video you said boss doesn't sell parts anymore, I need to get a new dc power jack for the pedal. I do not know how to find the part number and I wanna make sure I order the right part. Where can I find the right part and or part number? Another concern is the pedal has the revised smaller circuit boards (I bought it brand new inn 2021) and it seems too have a slightly different DC power jack (I could be wrong about it being different), but this is why I wanna make sure I find the right part.
This covers the very basic of ensuring you have an adequate power supply to the pedal, but fell a little short from the title of "repairing". Maybe you could post a follow up video demonstrating how to check the paths on the circuit board or measure the values of the resistors and ensure other components are functional?
Thanks for your comment. The most common failures of pedals are discussed in the video and most of these things can be remedied by even non-technical people. That's my intention with this video and these "fixes" are repairs. More detailed repair requires schematics, the ability to read them and circuit tracing skills. In addition, pedals are generally not of sufficient value to justify the time it would take to isolate and repair at the component level. I do have a video on repairing a stereo amplifier that involves troubleshooting and repairing at the component level as well as some videos on checking transistors, etc. Those concepts translate to other types of electronic equipment.
I have a TC Electronics Corona chorus pedal stereo when I'm running it in stereo on the mono side is not working just the regular sound coming through the amp the stereo side is giving me the chorus effect I've tried using different cables same thing.Any suggestions how I could troubleshoot it?
Hello, I have a old MIJ Boss CE-2 that is working with the 9v mod. The problem is that when I activate the effecte, it delay 3-4 seconds to listent the efect on the guitar signal. Is not without sound, is like the dry signal and the efect signal delay few seconds. Is not "on/off" effect on the guitar chanel. I changed all electrolytic capacitors. Thanks. Best regards
I have a boss OS-2 pedal that is always on ,the pedal switch does not turn the pedal off into bypass, could this be a bad switch or maybe some other problem?
What if one of the jack inputs is just a bit loose and not holding the connector jack tightly? How do you tighten the inside so the cables stay in securely?
Hi. My BEHRINGER vintage delay VD400 turn off and on just by touching the pedal. Can’t manage it properly. The light turns on and off whenever it wants too. What do I have to do?
Hello really nice video. I have a problem with my guitar effect pedal. Its a klon clone effect. I have guitar signal true the pedal. When i hit the button of the pedal light goes on but guitar sound the same. No klon over drive just the same sound when its off. instead of the klon overdrive. You know what the problem could be?
I found a old boss turbo OD2,But by the looks of it I've tried the wrong AC adapter and fried something,I don't know where to start diagnosis as I can't even switch it on 🙄
Hello. The same blues pedal i have stopped working last week after the power supply it was connected to shorted and I heard a pop. Are there any instructions on how to replace that part or if I can do the fixing myself at all?
Remove the circuit board and inspect the components and circuit traces for burns or other damage. I would suspect a diode near the adapter jack. Check diode D2 which is located near the adapter jack. This may have been shorted. Also, check the transistor Q2 which is a voltage regulator in the power circuit. You can check diodes and transistors with the diode setting of your multimeter.
Hi James, great video! I have a boss BF2 with a broken power adapter jack. I was going to replace the jack but then I noticed that the pedal also doesn’t work with a battery. I’m assuming that means it needs more than just a new power adapter jack. Am I correct?
Actually, you do need a functioning adapter jack for the pedal to work with a battery. The adapter jack has contacts that are closed when no plug is plugged in and these contacts enable the battery to power the pedal. When you plug in to the adapter jack, the contacts open up and disconnect the battery. So, if the jack isn't there or damaged, the battery won't power the pedal. You may be able to get a replacement jack from the pedal manufacturer or check mouser.com or digikey.com and find a jack that is the same form and function. Good Luck!
@@guitarsplusct How did you make sure to get the right jack? I'm having a hard time finding a part number or anything to confirm I'm getting the right one.
I burned my Ibanez Super metal Mini, the diode is in surface soldered burned, the one it's in first of the DC input, and I don´t know how to replace it, what kinda or type of diode it is? There´s no service manual on the web.
It just a silicon rectifier diode. You should be able to find on at this link. www.mouser.com/Search/Refine?Keyword=surface+mount+1+amp+diode You must solder it in place in the correct polarity. Hopefully, you can see how the old one is oriented and mount the new one in the same way.
Nice video!!! thanks a lot! subd and liked! quick question I have an ibanez pd7 (Phat head) the switch is not good, sometimes when I step on it it doesn't turn on...sometimes it does... any clues on this one? thanks!
When you push the plate on the pedal with your foot, that plate in turn presses on an electrical switch. You need to find out if the problem is mechanical or electrical in nature. Not sure how this model comes apart, but if you can flip up the plate that you tap with your foot and get to the switch, you can isolate the problem to either the electrical switch or a mechanical issue that is not allowing the switch to be activated. Push the switch directly and see if it turns the pedal on and off consistently. If it does, then the problem is mechanical and not the switch itself. You may be able to adjust or otherwise correct the problem. On the other hand , if the electrical switch is faulty, you will need a new switch. You may be able to order one from Ibanez directly. Their website should have a contact for technical assistance and parts.
@@jamelectronics hi there I have a delay pedal that is hissing when I turn it on and off. I've pulled apart an it seems fine so I am thinking it's the switches an Jack's that need spraying.
I was just looking for some answers as to why my BD-2 wasnt working. Then I realised I was going into it with a balanced cable. Apparently it needs an unbalanced cable to work..
I have a boss RV-5. The pedal works fine, but when I plug the power supply it's always ON. the footswitch is not working. I can't turn it OFF. Do you how hard is to fix that?
By saying "can't turn it off" I think you mean that the effects do not switch off as opposed to the unit does not power off. If the effects do not turn off when you press the footswitch, I would suspect that its either a mechanical problem in the footswitch assemble or that the small switch that gets depressed on the circuit board is manfunctioning. So, start with determining if the effect switches on or off when the electrical switch is directly pressed. If it works when you do this, then determine why pressing the footswitch doesn't result in the small switch being depressed. Good luck.
awesome thanks! how do you replace the switch on this pedal? I Have an Ibanez PD7 phat head bass overdrive that it doesn't turn on all the time sometimes I turn it on and it works and some other times don't... Thanks
I have a Boss BF-3 Flanger and after I play for a bit my pedal does weird cut in cut out thing from my amp and the light flashes red from the pedal...help?
Check battery if your using one. Check cables to and from pedal. Look at the manual obtainable from the Boss website. CHECK indicator This indicator shows whether an effect is ON/OFF, indicates the tempo (TEMPO mode: p. 9-p. 11), and also doubles as the Battery Check indicator. The indicator lights when an effect is ON. * If this indicator goes dim or no longer lights while an effect is ON or while the BF-3 is in TEMPO mode, the battery is near exhaustion and should be replaced immediately. For instructions on changing the batteries, refer to “Changing the Battery” (p. 14).
I have a question. So, more than a year ago, I used a wrong adaptor on my BOSS Blues Driver BD-2 by accident and I heard a loud pop right after I turned on my pedal before it stopped working. How do I figure out which capacitor blew up? I don't know anything about guitar pedal components at all, but I'm trying to learn in order to fix my pedal. Thanks!
James nice video, i got this pedal bd-2 with a problem, a friend plug a wrong adapter on the pedal. the pedal must be repair changing the jack o checking the circuit shortcut? thank you so much for the help aported!!!!
If the plug on the wrong adapter was physically too large, yes, the jack could have been damaged. If the polarity was wrong on the adapter, then I would check diode D2 which is located near the adapter jack. This may have been shorted. Also, check the transistor Q2 which is a voltage regulator in the power circuit. Good luck!
If the wrong adapter didn't physically damage the jack, then you shouldn't have to replace the jack. If the wrong adapter provided the incorrect voltage, then possibly some circuit component(s) may have been damaged.
Open the pedal, follow the power through the board, if you fried anything, usually the first or second di-o-resisto thing, or on the board immediatly below it, will be brown and/or misshapen. you can also hit it with your multimeter, and test. If you located a fried part , identify the part through schematics, patterns of rings, or labels on the circuit board, buy a replacement, de-solder the bad part, and solder the replacement. If you don't see any issues, then your outta my paygrade. Good Luck
Hi james. I accidentally plugged a 18v into a 9v nux horseman pedal and it make alot of noises right now :(( did i burnt my circuit? Is it fixable? Thanks for reading :))
Uh-oh! I don't have a schematic of the circuit for that pedal, but generally, applying 18 volts to a 9 volt circuit is likely to do some damage. I suggest you contact the manufacturer of the pedal and see what they say.
Yes. It suggests that there is a short or low resistance to ground at the + battery terminal. The trick is finding the problem. Check the leads from the battery, check the integrity of the adapter jack, check the circuit board where that jack is soldered in. Also, check a diode located near the adapter jack that may have gotten damaged from incorrect polarity of an adapter. Other than that, the problem found be from any shorted diode, transistor or ic on the board.
Hi I have anelectro harmonix pedal with crackling pots. how do I access the pots to clean them? there is a computer board in the way with no screws to remove it? thanks
There has to be a way to get to the pots. Look for screws mounting the circuit board. Also, try removing the knobs from the pot shafts and loosening the nuts that hold the pots to the case. See if the board also loosens up- if so, then remove the nuts and then the board which the pots may be attached to. Sometimes a bit tricky to get effects apart, but there is always a way. Finally, you can try and squirt electronics cleaner into the back of the pots if there is an opening in the board where a nozzle extension tube can reach. Another way to clear pots is to exercise then clockwise then counterclockwise many times until the scratchiness goes away.
Is the pedal footswitch supposed to click. I have a boss pedal and everything seems good with no signs of anything bad. Yet it still wont turn on. And it was working fine with no issues and then just stopped working. Its fairly new too. The only thing I can think of is that the pedal doesn't make the clicking noise when stepped on but I'm not sure it ever did. So maybe that's the issue and just needs a new footswitch cus the one in there now doesnt click when presed
On my BD-2 there is no audible click. It depends on what kind of switch they use on the pedal. It is possible the switch is bad or the linkage that caused the switch to activate when you press the pedal could be faulty. You could check the switch by opening the pedal, finding the switch connections and measuring with an ohmmeter continuity while activating the pedal and switch. But fefore you do that, First make sure you have a good power source. Test with a battery only, and then with an adapter. Also, you could check manufacturers warranty since this is a fairly new pedal.
@@jamelectronics yeah it's been pretty funny how about 95% of the pedal troubleshooting videos always say use the right adapter but never mention the battery is probably the way to go and safer. At least that way you know if it's a good battery it should work where as an adapter may not work for several reasons and not give you a definitive answer that the battery will. And no risk of electrocuting yourself lol. But it looks like this may be the make. It's a boss super shifter and apparently alot of these have issues. I guess it's kinda like they put too much into a pedal that is too small. They should have made the pedal bigger to accommodate all the circuitry and wiring but wanted to save a few bucks. So the heat from soldering from the factory can affect nearby parts ruining continuity. But since alot of them work fine they let it slide when they should have recalled it. It was getting frustrating cuz normally I have no issues fixing things like this but just couldn't figure out what the issue was. But called the company and they said there was issues with these in particular and would send me a new QC'd pedal and to toss the other. They didnt even ask for it back. So that tells you they know. But the pedal worked fine for a few weeks before. So I hope this doesnt happen again especially live. Was just hoping thos was gonna save me from taking several guitars around cuz they're all tuned differently but has proven to be a whole new pain in the ass lol....but thanks for getting back and helping. Much appreciated thx
Wailing Pines most AC wall adapters change AC to DC and also transform the voltage from mains level (120v in The US) to a lesser voltage (9v for boss pedals). If you were to connect mains level AC to your pedal, it would most likely start smoking🤕 I suggest consulting the manufacturer for information on the correct adapter 🤗
My boss SD-1 overdrive pedal's input doesn't work, the output makes noise but when i plug my guitar in to it there is no noise. I have tried everything in this video and still can't figure out whats wrong. Any advice or tips? Is this a common problem?
I assume you have a good battery in it, or a 9v. d.c. adapter with the negative on the center pin. Check the input jack, On the circuit board, is the solder intact and no cracks? While your at it look at all the solder. Make sure all joints are shiny and intact. Look for any obvious damage of components. If that yields nothing, then you will need to trace the signal input using the schematic to find where it is being stopped. here is a link that has the schematic www.hobby-hour.com/electronics/s/sd1-super-overdrive.php
If you hear no sound passing in either clean or distortion modes, then I would suspect, next, either Q6 or possibly D1 diode ( near the adapter jack). Does the led light when switch is in distortion position?
Thank you! Yes I have a new 9v battery plus an accurate 9v DC adapter. The red light comes on, and the circuit board looks good to me however I’ll reference the schematic for an issue.
To really get the cleaner into the pot, the board has to be raised. However, you can remove the knobs and spray around the pot shaft and then rotate the pot back and forth. This often lets enough contact cleaner ooze down into the Pot to clear it.
No, you can use an effects pedal with the adapter only. If a battery is installed, when the adapter is plugged in, the battery is disconnected by way of the switch contacts on the pedal jack. The pedal will work with an adapter and no battery, also.
I've never seen anyone check a 9v battery with a meter before! One's tongue does the same thing... doesn't take long to get a feel for how much charge is in it!
I would check the leads of the LED first. Make sure not broken or bad solder connection to circuit board. Then if that's ok, check to see if there is voltage measured across the LED. Should be between 1.8 and 3.0 volts when effect is turned on. If voltage is ok, and leads intact, then I would suspect the LED. Note: Boss effects have a 5 year warranty, so, if under warranty you can take advantage of that.
Very detailed video thank you... however, i was hoping you would have addressed the momentary switch and if that might be a failure. Sometimes the momentary switch breaks and you dont get the snap anymore.
You are correct, sometimes the switches fail, though its not as common a problem as the ones I talked about in the video. This check and repair is a little more complicated for the average user, so I chose to not include. If the effects will not switch on and off with a push of the button, the first check is to see if it is a problem with the switch itself or a mechanical issue between the switch plate and electrical switch. This can be determined by getting direct access to the electrical switch and pushing it directly while the unit is powered up cabled up and see if it will switch the effects. If it does not switch the effects when directly pressing the switch, perhaps it is the switch. Now, you must determine which contacts of the switch should be closing when pressed and check with a multimeter if they are or not. After determining that you believe the switch is bad, obtain another switch from pedal manufacturer or other vendor and replace. Thanks for your comment!
A friend used my reverb pedal and the moron he is used a ac 9 volt adapter on it he said it started smoking now to doesn't work at all with a battery or power supply. I opened it but couldn't really see anything burnt up was wondering what part on it could be bad. It's really not worth having repaired locally as they charge about as much as the pedal costs but if I could fix it myself It would be worth it
If the pedal was smoking, I would suspect you could see the source of the smoke. (Not sure if he meant the adapter was smoking or the pedal). Look for discoloration on the circuit board on both sides. Also, look carefully at each component for signs of overheating. Near the adapter jack there should be a diode. Check it with a multimeter using the diode setting. If shorted, it will read "0" ohms with the meter leads applied with red lead to the bar side and the black lead to the other side. Then reverse leads and see if still reads "0" ohms. If so, the diode has been damaged and will need to be replaced.
Fantastically informative video, one obvious suggestion would be to use a soft surface to work on your customers pedals vs that bare MDF top that would most certainly mar, or scuff up the pedal in some way- even a little is unacceptable.
Hello I have this trouble with my boss dd5 (when pressing footswitch sometimes doest work or doesnt work at all sometimes) can somebody help me please? I always used a boss adapter and already replaced the footswitch with a new one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O52YiLICc5Y.html
You can't accurately "test" a battery without putting a load on it, but I would argue that you can quickly "check" one with a multimeter and get a very good idea if it is adequate or not. As I said in the video, a good option (and the easiest) is to just put in a fresh battery.
The first things to check are to make sure your battery or power source( adapter) are working properly. If you run off a battery, try a new one. If off adapter, try using a battery. If that's not your problem then there may be a faulty component on the circuit board. Sometimes temperature sensitive problems can be isolated with some chill spray. Good Luck.
"Check your battery or power supply with another pedal" ....2.5 seconds vs 6 minutes. Good job, Boomer, your peers would have taken 9 minutes and included a boast of how they rode all the way to Sturgis on their ass.
