Checking The Incoming NATURAL and PROPANE GAS PRESSURE with a Manometer for Appliances!
This HVAC video is about how to check the incoming gas pressure with a digital manometer for appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, etc. I go over what both Natural Gas and Propane pressures should be as well as what some furnaces run through the electrical gas valve inside the unit. I show a simple tool that you can make to accommodate a simple test for incoming pressure as well as other tips! Supervision is needed by a licensed HVAC Tech before doing this as Experience and Apprenticeship garners Wisdom and Safety.

Hello, and thank you for the great video. Liked & subscribed. One question, if I am using a dual port (-/+) manometer, how do I measure gas pressure? (I'm assuming I couple the two ports to get a single reading, since using both ports would measure pressure difference.) Thanks!

Great video, thank you. So after you test gas pressure on the line, you set your gas pressure on the furnace?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 лет назад
Yes you would move the brass barb fitting downstream of the electrical gas valve at the end of the gas valve when diagnosing and adjusting pressure. I will be making a lot more videos on furnace diagnosis along with gas lines and pressure adjustments. Thanks

I'm currently a plumber but will be trained in HVAC. Can a dual port manometer also be used for this type of pressure check? I currently have a Dwyer single port but am looking at a few dual port options. I also need a dual port for testing gas pressures on some tankless water heaters.

I love the SDMN6 because I also use the internal pump to verify condition of pressure switches as well as pressure differentials and measuring gas pressures. Yes you can use a dual for a single function. You could look up "acservicetech sdmn6" I also have that tool linked in the description sections and at amazon.com/shop/acservicetech thanks!

Notice how when you shut the valve off it began to drop. Does that determine a leak? Or could it be a regulator/valve burping possibly
@outlawdiesel5221
@outlawdiesel5221 Год назад
I believe the regulator/valve has a vent, once gas pressure is shut off it vents excess pressure. I could be wrong.

Thanks for the video. Absolutely blows be away that these digital manometer tools make it so that people have to make up their own connection adaptors....and then to reply on a barb fitting tube. I'm new to all of this, but c'mon manufacturers....this is a joke. Thanks again for the helpful video on how to work with this lack of a complete tool!

You can make a fitting out of various fittings, you don't have to drill into a cap
@fvfgx

one quick ? I think I kinda know half of it maybe. hear it is, to make straight air with electric heat to a heat pump you replace the condensing unit,T Stat thats heat pump compadible and six wire and a biflow filter dyer or is there air handler only designed for heat pump only
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 лет назад
just make sure that the txv is not a single directional and that it will bypass. It is also good to add the outdoor sensor so you can turn the heat pump off automatically if the temp goes down too low and only the strip heating on.

where do I get the port with cap with port on it?????
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 лет назад
So when you purchase a manometer, the brass barbed fitting comes with it and will actually fit directly to the tubing. You can buy the very same size brass barbed fitting and then you can then drill a hole in a spare cap you have and then tap the thread size and screw your barbed fitting in and then you have it. I recommend having one of these setups for 1/2", 3/4", and 1". The loose barb fitting that came with the manometer will be what is screwed into the electrical gas valve. I will be focusing on gas and heat now instead of ac so I will be putting out a lot of videos on these processes soon. The black reducer you saw came out of my old yellow jacket gauge
@DayClanTribe
@DayClanTribe 6 лет назад
I'm thinking one could take a simple water or gas pressure test fitting, throw a 3/4" to 1/2" reducer in the bottom, pull the schrader from the side port and push your surgical hose over it. Might be quicker than drilling a hole through a cap and since I have a few testers laying around. Then you have a multi-purpose test tool.
@arkanoiddude
@arkanoiddude 5 лет назад
Why don't you want to use the tap in the gas valve? Not sure I understand the benefit of doing it this way vs just tapping into the inlet port on the gas valve.
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 5 лет назад
Sometimes they are a bear to get to the gas valve tap. They can be difficult so it is just easier to take it at the drip tee cap. Not always but sometimes it is easier, thanks!

That gas line is galvanized steel. You need black pipe for gas, it resists corrosion from the added odorants in natural gas. If it's propane... still use black pipe.
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 5 лет назад
Galv is absolutely fine to use and it does not distinguish between Galv or Black Iron in the IFGC 2018. In fact, our supply houses won't even stock black iron near us for gas piping. We are near the ocean on the east cost. If you install black iron, then it will rot and leak out of the threads in this location but you can use either one, thanks`

There is no differentiation in black iron vs galvanized in the IFGC 2021. We live near the ocean and supply houses only supply galv. Black iron rots too quickly but in reference to nationally, there is no problem using galv unless your local inspector shows you some reference to a code that the city has adopted outside of IFGC, thanks!

Hi, I don't mean to be critical. I am not able to make videos at this time. Could you please refine your video so someone doesn't get injured? You were showing 7.4 on the manometer, but you didn't specify if it was for natural or propane. Then when you added your text at 5:03 on screen, you said 3.4-3.8", and 10" for propane. I don't understand. And it would be better if you described this pressure if the burner is drawing or not. I'm not sure what reading should be used for natural now and whether the unit you are checking at is drawing fuel. Granted you did say to have other appliances running. Good job, but I think it would be wise since you are reporting on gas, your site should be more thorough to avoid a law suit. Just my love and opinion. Aloha, Paul
@joedugas9462

sure looks like galvanized pipe. Illegal.
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 лет назад
Hey Joe, thanks for your comment. Here we use the IFGC 2015 and it does not state that you cannot used galvanized. Code from the IFGC is also interpreted by the code official. Actually we could fail here if we used anything other than galvanized. I am located by the shore and no code official wants to see any black iron outside of the building. It is comon practice here to install all galvanized through the whole building and suppliers mainly only sell galvanized because they don't want to stock both. Our Main Gas Utility Provider also only installs galvanized on and near the natural gas meter. It is likely that a code official in your location is interpreting the code in their own way or you have another code book you are working out of. Thanks
