After adjusting the truss rod and setting the string saddle heights at the bridge, you can now make the third adjustment, which is to the nut slots. Dave Johnson shows how to check the nut slots to see if they need adjusting.

I just installed a new nut. When I got it close, I used a very good tuner to check the first 3:11 fret note to cut it to completion .

I go with barely any space when doing the hold down test. Space you can't see. As long as you hear a plink while holding down tne string between the 2nd and 3 frets, you're good. Thats small space is basically 002-005. All I need. Unless its actually sitting on the fret, imo it's not too low. Slide a piece of notebook paper under it and should have some resistance, but fit

Hey can I ask if the 'plink' sound you hear is made by all the strings? The thin ones AND the wound ones?

@@amaguptyes, you want all the strings to make the "plink" sound. Don't waste your time with any over priced tools. Simply capo the third fret and measure by tapping or flicking the strings above the first fret. Then lower according to taste.

Confusing. Why specify it has to be 4/64 to 5/64 at the 12th fret while aiming at .018" if you are holding at the 3rd fret. If you are holding at the 3rd fret, height at the 12th fret plays no role.

I think they are two different things. checking at the third fret is to set the nut correctly. Checking at the twelfth fret is to check neck relief. You can also check intonation at the 12th fret

3'rd fret is nut height. 5.....7 fret is truss rod relief. 12'th fret is string action height.

Obviously I do think metric is easier and more intuitive, but it's very impressive how American centric guitar video presenters can seemlessly step up and down fractions of an inch. It's definitely a skill that has to be learned.
