Great video. Joe is an excellent DPE. I would recommend any candidate to view this before taking a checkride.

I just completed my IFR check ride with Joe as DPE. He was great. Very informative and very professional. I would not hesitate to recommend him as the DPE. Just come prepared!

I just stumbled across this episode I follow in the hanger quite closely I just took my written test and only got a 72% and I've been beating myself up over it how funny is that when you were giving an example if you only make a 72% don't worry about it and that some of the smartest people don't do well on tests I know that's me absolute because my CFI has been giving me a great deal of attaboy's for the simple fact I can fly the airplane and I exercise risk management and emergency awareness yay God for this show making me feel better again thank you

Very good show. I'm not a pilot or student pilot but this will help those going for it immensely I'm sure. Thanks for the info. Joe is a really cool, smart guy.

I am getting back in flying after "life" stopped that for years, and will be getting my instrument rating first. I appreciate Joe's information. And It makes me look forward to learning more soon!

I've been trying to get my checkride completed since Nov. Weather, maintenance, and even the ADS-B compliance have all caused delays for me. Each push adds a month to the checkride date. Not many DPE's in my area so its just a hurry up and wait scenario.

A text message doesn't "go away". There is no difference between that and an email. You can follow up on either. Both just sit there and are unread, you can click on them and they become read, and don't go anywhere. I think it's fine to tell people your preference is email, but trying to blame it on some supposed technological difference is disingenuous

Questions from the studio audience! I like that! That's a cool way to engage the audience and at the same time provide food for thought.

I would love to see an update on this re: FAA expectations from DPEs. I'm about to take my check ride and the FAA is really cracking down on DPEs who teach. Recently fired 3 for this very reason in Maine/New England and now New England DPEs are even tougher to come by than they Joe mentioned.

If you don’t want the FAA examiner along for your check ride, just placard the rear seat seat belt buckles as an operative.

Hey I haven’t piloted for years but now watching videos. There should be a full explanation of what DP is, don’t assume everyone is a student or licensed pilot. Please just think about this.

I’ll tell ya, I am getting ready to jump back in my training and finish up my ppl. I currently have 26 hours but are mostly twenty years old. My problem is I don’t feel I should start until I know EVERYTHING by heart! When I know the dpe doesn’t expect that at all. How do you get passed that???
@TakingOff
@TakingOff 4 года назад
For flying, there's a million little details-- it's impossible to know everything by heart before getting back in the air. Maybe tell yourself that your CFI knows the important stuff so you can relax behind the yoke and begin to fly again.

I felt the same way! I finally realized I wasn’t going to know ANYthing until I got in the plane and experienced it. I still don’t know everything, but I learn more every time I fly.

Money and time. First step is to find a school or instructor to teach you. Check out the nearest airport to you and see who’s there that can teach, then call them and book a discovery flight. Let us know how it goes!

“When you walk in the room, hand them the money.” What a turn-off this whole discussion was. Not all DPE are this pompous and degrading. Find a good DPE, they are out there, but not in this discussion.

I am a consulting engineer. Over about 15 years, I have been stiffed twice, for a lot more than the examiner is charging, so I will pay the examiner early in the meeting!

I can see how you may have taken it that way but it seems it could potentially be a very helpful tip for both parties. I've worked in sales management for a long time and most people feel uncomfortable asking for money even if it is due to them. By alleviating this for the DPE, it shows you care, respect their time and might make them more at ease, which might just make you more at ease, and in the end test better. Plus, there is no chance of forgetting to pay and getting as much off your plate as soon as possible is helpful for the student so they don't have to worry about remembering later.

Even though I took my PP checkride 55 years ago the pride I felt in passing it remains with me today. The call sign of the aircraft I flew for the checkride was Cherokee 33Whiskey out of Memphis Aero. What wonderful memories I have of learning to fly with one of the premier FBOs in the nation at that time.

If I could pass a 4 1/2 day architecture exam, one day checkride should not be any problem. Yes, the feeling does stay with you.
