Coming up… A song that has been hailed as one of the sexiest ever recorded, yet it's also landed on lists for being one of the worst songs of all time. Afternoon Delight by Starland Vocal Band… Love it or hate it, its impact on pop culture is undeniable. Created by a classmate of a former President, Bill Danoff and his future wife Taffy Nivert... it was inspired by the lunch menu at a diner in Washington, D.C. Bill and Taffy are the same couple who wrote John Denver’s hit Take Me Home Country Roads. Afternoon Delight skyrocketed this new band to fame, even scoring them their own TV show featuring a then-unknown comedian named David Letterman. Although we all know Afternoon Delight as a fun and easy singalong, the revered producer Milt Okun and engineer Phil Ramone behind it considered it to be one of the most complex songs they ever worked on Join us as we uncover the fascinating tale behind this unforgettable one-hit wonder of the Rock Era…NEXT…on Professor of Rock.

So Before David Letterman became a household name on Late Night TV, Believe it or not, he was part of The Starland Vocal Band Show. While many of you can’t recall the show, you've likely sung along to their iconic smash single, Afternoon Delight. Released in the summer of ’76, "Afternoon Delight" rocketed to the top of the charts, claiming the number one spot during America’s bicentennial. The Starland Vocal Band, comprising two married couples - Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert Danoff, and Jon Carroll and Margot Chapman - earned FIVE Grammy Award nominations in ‘77, clinching victories for Best New Artist and Best Vocal Arrangement.
The three Wilson Brothers from The Beach Boys, including a rare appearance by Brian Wilson, handed the band their Grammy for Best New Artist- most notably beating out Boston, who had set a record for having the best-selling debut album of all time.
7 years before the formation of Starland Vocal Band in ‘67, it was the Bill & Taffy show, as in Bill Danoff and his live-in girlfriend, Taffy Nivert. The couple were in a folk act called Fat City that didn’t receive much attention beyond the Washington D.C. area where the two resided. Over a 4 year span, Billy & Taffy wrote over 300 songs together, yet not one of them sparked any interest from the record industry.
After two eclectic albums, and opening for Emmylou Harris & John Denver, Fat City evolved into simply Bill & Taffy. As you recall from a previous edition of POR, the duo hit pay dirt with their collaboration on “Take Me Home Country Roads” with the great John Denver in ‘71, and their fortunes steadily improved. On the strength of their success with “Take Me Home Country Roads,” and the ardent backing of the emerging star power of Denver, Bill & Taffy were signed to John’s label, RCA, and released two albums that misfired. It was back

I saw Starland Vocal Band play this song live on May 6 1976 at Tarrant County Convention Center in Ft.Worth Tx. Afternoon Delight was a new hit. They sounded great!!..John Denver took the stage afterwards. It was a very special show. Very charismatic!!. John graduated from high school in Ft.Worth while his father was stationed at Carswell Air force Base. My father never took pop music seriously, but, at this show, when dad heard how John could yodel on "Callypso", he was blown away.

I saw them on the same tour in a different city: Vancouver! What a dynamic show it was! That was when Bill Danoff doused my delight by 'splaining that it had been a menu item... *sigh* 🥲 Still, it was a wonderful concert. I managed to get a boot tape.

Jealous fellow Fort Worther here. (For the John Denver part.) The Tarrant County Convention Center was the absolute bomb! I hold many memories there, many great shows! In the time when you didn’t need to be a CEO to buy a front row ticket. And all of the Greats were there! What a time, huh? My sister has pictures of the sign out front saying; “Led Zeppelin Tonight” as well as many of the band as well as other bands. My pics are all in my head and heart. So many wonderful memories! The song listed here was too nerdy for me but I Thank you for sharing the memories of John Denver. Loved that guy! Never ashamed to admit that!

Oh SHt!!..That's an absolute miracle if Led Zeppelin played there. They always had such terrible luck when touring the US. As you know, TCCC was fairly big, but not a massive Wembley size..I was only 13 yrs old when we saw John. I didn't go back to TCCC until I was 15yrs old. My best friend got his mom to drop us off out in front, while his uncle snuck us in to see Supertramp.(Breakfast In America tour 1979). Then, I saw Boston there too.(1979) with the unknown Sammy Hagar opening up..I was ruined after that..hahah..In 1980 I saw Cheap Trick(Dream Police tour) across town at Will Rogers. Great times!!!..I'm sure there were MANY great shows at TCCC throughout the 70's, until 1981 when most of the big shows moved over to Reunion Arena in Dallas.

My hormones were skyrocketing, as I was a ninth-grader when this song came out, so I certainly got its meaning. But what I remember most is singing along with it. Since my alto harmonies were developing in school and church choirs, this song, with its simple bohm . . . bohm rhythm would get me swaying and delighting, and it still does. “Alexa, play ‘Afternoon Delight.’” ❤ BTW, love all the inside info you get about the musicians. This song came out when I was in middle school. We had a teacher that was two years older than Christ, she was so uptight that it took a hammer to drive a needle up her behind. She hated this song, and hated the fact that all of us boys loved it, as we sang the chorus while strolling the hallways. I played saxophone and piano in band throughout middle school and had a band teacher that was freaking awesome. He was able to get the sheet music for the song, and it is actually quite complex as the narrator pointed out. This was also around the same time the song "You Light Up my Life" was so popular. I hated that song, but the same uptight teacher that hated Afternoon Delight asked the band to learn You Light Up my Life because she wanted it played for some event she was hosting. Don't get me started on Muskrat Love. The band had to learn that song for another teacher.

@@lorimiller4301 The problem I had with music during that time was that FM stations didn’t know when to stop playing a song. Of course you recall that we didn’t have Pandora or Satellite to broaden our music choices. I might have liked Muskrat Love the first 500 times I heard it. But again, we had such a great band teacher that was able to get us sheet music to a lot of the modern songs which means the school was willing to pay the ASCAP fees so we could learn to play those songs. He also believed that anyone that wanted to be in band should be able to join. If there was a student that wanted to join but couldn’t afford an instrument, Mr B. would come up with something for them to play. I went to a very small middle school. I think there were 150 students in 6-8 grade, out of that we had at least 30 in our band class. To hear that a lot of schools in California have cut band because of budget problems just kills me

I knew this song was super-cheesy (and rather square in a Lawrence Welk kinda way, in my young opinion) when I was 11 years old in 1976 and this song was all over the radio -- like another commenter, I associate it with family summer vacation -- but of course I had no idea about the sexual overtones; I simply thought that two lovers were going to spend a nice afternoon watching some fireworks, and that the fireworks show was going to be a delightful way to spend the afternoon together. When I learned about the true innuendo a few years later, I was genuinely surprised, but very amused at my own young naivete! Also, surprised because I'd thought the song so 'square,' and then it turned out to be a little bit 'naughty.' Another great video!

I think the bass track made the song so catchy. When this song first hit the air I was just young enough that I didn't realize what it was about. I must have heard it hundreds of times from the radio that was always playing in the background in my house. Then one day in middle school I was at the dining room table trying to get some homework done when this song started playing and my brain finally made the connection. I groaned out loud "OH MY GOD". My mom heard me from another room and asked what I was groaning about, to which I could only reply "nothing mom, never mind".

Now that I’m retired, I really enjoy reminiscing with your show! Few takeaways. I never was much of a John Denver fan, but he seemed to have been a really decent guy! This particular song Afternoon Delight was not on my favourites list, but listening to it now brings nice feelings of nostalgia for that era. I appreciate how hard Danoff (?spelling) worked. He and the band got some well deserved recognition. Nothing wrong with that! Boston and Foreigner went on with more hits and more sold out arenas but the Starland Vocal Band will always have their moment in the Grammys to look back on. Thanks again for the walk down Memory Lane!

As a little kid, my sister bought the 45 of Afternoon Delight. We listened to it over and over and the sexual innuendo was utterly lost on us. I just loved the rocket sound and 12 string and harmonies. I thought the ladies had such pretty voices. Many years later the funniest use of the song was in Arrested Development when it was performed karaoke style by Maybee and Justin Bateman's character (Michael?) when the uncle and niece recognized mid-song that it was totally inappropriate for them to duet that song. Soooo funny.
