Food Network star Chef Dom Tesoriero heads to Birmingham, Alabama where he meets al.com food writer Bob Carlton. Together, they head to Chef Frank Stitt’s James Beard award-winning restaurant Bottega: where the American South meets Italy. Dom tries this unique spin on Italian food: grilled jumbo asparagus, royal red and sweet pea bruschetta, and lemon, ricotta, and chili pizza. Over a glass of wine, Frank talks about what the James Beard award means to him and to Birmingham at large. Bob and Dom head over to Bob Sykes’ Bar-B-Q, where Van Sykes shows Dom how to prep the pork and the ways of the pit. Dom sweats it out on the barbecue grill. Can he take the heat or is he toast?

So glad you came to Alabama and had some of our good food and hospitality! Next time, come back and try some of our southern/soul food restaurants and I guarantee you won't leave!

That’s what he should’ve gotten. At least the food it would have respected where it came from.

Hi, I was raised in Birmingham, but moved a bit north. I just wanted to mention some of my old favorite restaurants of years past: John’s, The Pioneer in Roebuck, China Garden, The Dragon in Century Plaza, Alabama Steaks, Nabeel’s in Homewood, The Original Pancake House, Jim & Nick’s Barbecue, Marsh’s Bakery, The Ensley Grill, and The Fish Market. Thank, you, Birmingham, for all the great culinary experiences! I also must mention the bon bons, at the Pizitz in Roebuck (I know, it was a department store in Roebuck Shopping City that became a MacRae’s, but, I remember an inexplicable bakery there?) also, my husband is from Queens, NYC 😊

Great old time choices. Unfortunately The Pioneer is long gone. So is Century plaza. It’s a Amazon distribution center now. Nabeels has been bought out and the menu and quality have gone down and the market closed. Original pancake House is as good as ever tho. Jim & Nicks has expanded and yet is still really good. Marsh’s is gone which broke my heart because my granny lived right next to it and I grew up on their goodies. When pizitz closed the pizitz bakery opened in center point. But it’s also gone. Now we have the Pizitz food hall downtown which is very fun.

I don’t care what awards he got, the pizza crust was horrible and resembled nothing to Neapolitan pizza. I failed to see any connection to Italian cuisine to this.

Maybe Olive Garden is more your style.

The pizza looked awesome. And not so dissimilar to pizza I had in Naples. And he is arguably one of if not the best chef in the country. He lived in Italy for awhile and worked on a olive farm and vineyards for the knowledge and experience.
