This episode of Hear Me Out was created in 2021.
Chef Jose Andres went from a small town in Spain to internationally renowned chef and humanitarian. His cooking career started in NYC, and he is credited with bringing the ‘tapas’ craze to the US that launched him into celebrity chef stardom, winning James Beard awards and Michelin stars on his way. In 2010, he founded World Central Kitchen, a non-profit dedicated to disaster relief and eradicating world hunger. Since the pandemic, the organization has been in overdrive, working to both support struggling restaurants, and feed the hungry. Eager to check out the impact of Chef Andres’ work, Isobel goes on the ground with two of the World Central Kitchen partner restaurants in Oakland, California.

This makes me reflect on how vital food is from a fundamental of life all the wag up to the privileges we take for granted when it comes to where and what we put into our mouths and from the labour of love and cultural history that comes from food. Its such a primitive thing we take for granted everyday, yet, it’s those everyday people who suffer until it begins to impact more and more people even some at the higher status of society. Its a crisis in require a deep amount of human empathy, insight and foresight as well as the call for our humanity to take care of one another before its too late. This documentary was powerful in reflecting on my immigrant vietnamese parents, telling me stories of the rations they received at refugee camps to the times where we ate unhealthy because of what we could afford. My father working his entire life in food and my curiosity towards cooking. All of this really hit me and this video and this story is truly meaningful message to those suffering and those trying to not only survive, but help others keep on going while leadership and government do nothing to engage the issue on a ground level . We need to raise up.

I’m sure there are countless foundations/ngos/initiatives that are just as helpful. But this one is headed by a famous chef.

The very fact you can’t name any off the top of your head (not throwing shade, I can’t either) is why this chef is doing this. He is using his money, resources, and fame to bring attention to an altruistic mission.

I like JA's no-nonsense approach to life. In general and especially in so-called developed countries, we're too built up on narratives and handed down ideas of who we are and therefore what to be or do. There's something primal and native about his approach...or so it seems. Doesn't mean things always turn out as one plans, but that's just plans. The arcane notion of right and wrong have proven to be contextually applicable at best, constantly fluid for sure. The closer we stick to our core of taking what we know and sharing it for the benefit of co-existing peacefully- as he seems to -the more objectively "correct" we are in our approach. It's a matter of what is here, seeing it clearly and comprehensively and not adding onto it; rather simply taking care of it. Something food does for all of our narratives, regardless of classification. He seems to embody that. Good focus JA. Good approach.

Some 40% of food, from failed seed to throwing food into the trash, is wasted each year in the USA. America grows a tremendous amount of food, but we also throw it away as well

Stop punishing small farmers if you want food. Its not hard.
@adityaparab5680

Only way to do that, is stop big agricultural companies from fucking them over. We can even make specific regulations and maybe even look at the stuff from Tyson, Monsanto fucks and make them drop their patents and trash method of productions, stop abusing chickens and the farmers. Maybe even stop voting for politicians who will take money from such companies. Maybe decrease the meat consumption along the way and increase focus on other methods of meat production than caged pigs and chicken farms. I doubt any guy worth his salt will be pro-chicken in big dark boxes with hormones injections and be wanting to feed that to his kids.

The CONSTANT background music is REALLY ANNOYING. If the content is interesting, there is no need to make this type of stimulating -non stop type of editing. It ruins the watch experience and just induces anxiety.
