I was 7 when I watched this and the previous 2-2 match. I wanted Chelsea to win because I loved their blue kit with the stripe and number on the shorts. Afterward, my parents gave me a kid's version of the full kit as a present. I treasured that kit and became a lifelong fan.
I was there that night. A 17year old apprentice with a mate and a guy we met up with from London. We had Leeds tickets that, despite our best efforts , could not swap. I'm 65 years old now and find it hard to believe that the greatest sporting night of my life was that long ago. The last 15 years have been wonderful for Chelsea, but for me NOTHING could ever compare with that night. You had to be there!!!
Just been reliving the greatest night off football I was 18 year old shed boy in the Stratford end and agree you had to be there tomsample the atmosphere What didn't come across in clip is the continuous chanting of "Chelsea " for 5 minutes before Webby scored which was incredible I arrived back in London about 9am next day and have absolutely No recollection of the intervening time Great memories FA Cup will never recover the magic it once had.
Time goes fast indeed ! I grew up in Toronto and used to go to all the games here and noticed Peter Lorimer in the Leeds lineup. He played in Toronto in 1979. In those days only the FA cup was live on TV !
@@riobabic8960 Apparently the match had the highest tv viewing figures for a sporting event after the 1966 world cup final. 28 million in the uk alone. Plus a massive world wide audience. Its such a shame the F A Cup lost its way somehow. Lorimer was part of the "Leeds Machine" in the 70s and the 1970 Cup Final sparked a fierce rivalry between the two clubs. Wonderful days!
To any youngsters watching this YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA HOW IMPORTANT THE FA CUP WAS IN THOSE DAYS! This was the greatest game I ever went to - stood in the Stretford this night - absolute ecstasy!💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙 Gutted for Alan Hudson I was at West Brom when he got the injury that made him miss out.
This game is the stuff of legend. Probably the greatest English club game ever. Certainly the most watched on TV. Gets better with time. What a battle for at what the time was the most prestigious title in global club football. Winning the FA Cup was a very special thing & was considered even more important than winning the league title.
Its most certainly up there, with the very best , Its my most memorable, But have to say, being a Leeds fan at the time, I was gutted, but only until we finally won the cup in 72.
RIP Peter Bonnetti and Norman Hunter I can remember watching this match at home on the B&W television I was 9 and had started supporting Chelsea a year or so before and was the only Blue at School ! still support the Blues and now so do my kids.
Both goalkeepers in the replay went on to become postmen on remote Scottish islands (Peter Bonetti - Chelsea - Mull, David Harvey - Leeds - Sanday, Orkney). Gary Sprake (Leeds goalkeeper in the first game) had a very bad back injury which required many years of treatment and would have ruled him ineligible had he applied to the GPO for a job after his playing career had finished.
I'm a millennial so was never blessed with seeing 70's football live, but I just love it. This is real football. The players kicking the shit out of each other on the field, with occasional punches being thrown now and then. It may have been dirty and gritty, but diving and efforts to fool the referee were rare. No concerted effort was made to get opponents sent off and at the end of the game they shake hands and get along. You could tell they respected eachother. That's all gone now, and it's a rot that goes all the way to the top. Messi and his countrymen vs. Holland in the World Cup is a prime example of this. Cheating is expected and widely understood as a part of the game. I wish we could go back to the old days.
Years ago in our office, we had a trivia nut who used to get us through boring Friday afternoons by throwing up a debate "Greatest pop song of all time?" "Greatest F1 driver?" And a fair few relating to females that would probably get a fella sacked in the 21st century too LOL. One day his topic was "Greatest Horror movie of all time?" And after a few minutes of debate with the usual suspects being suggested, a craggy old hand entered the office and was asked for his opinion. He paused briefly and than said in a great East Belfast brogue "Easy. 1970 cup final replay. Fucken bloodbath" and left the scene. a few seconds of silence and then we all fell apart laughing. One of those in the moment things that sticks with me over thirty years later.
Modern day referees have watched this game & it's been said that, if played today, there'd be between 6 & 10 red cards night. It was a brutal game. Belting game of old school footy & was the first time that I'd ever wanted chelsea to win, coz I hated leeds so much.
This will never been beaten as the best match ever, I have seen my Chelsea win it all now being 62 years old it’s hard to remember as I was young at the time, but for me it will never be as good as this up the blues. .
The season I started to support cfc before we won the cup and coming 3rd in the league . I was 12. Haven't seen this for ages. It was good to see the players swapping shirts. After both teams were kicking each other all over place. Notice that players didn't grab each other in the penalty area. When football was football. Great memories. 👍.😊
Watched it on TV ....terrific game...150% commitment and effort....plus a lot of skill !! Of course there were fouls, but it was a different era and both sides gave as good as they got. Wonderful stuff
What a night to remember, 9 years old stayed up late to watch, whole family Chelsea, used to go down to there training ground at Mitcham and watch there training sessions,
Hard to say on reflection who had the best tickets. To be in the Stretford End must have been fantastic but to witness /watch the Stetford End was amazing. When Webbs goal went in you can just spot the three of us doing our best to emulate you lot.....almost suicidal that night...but impossible to suppress!! We were up and to left of the right hand post surrounded by the most pissed off rival fans I've ever experienced.....just brilliant!!
Remember us kids all trying to do Windmill Arms Hutchinson throw ins for weeks after. 50 years ago.. Bloody hell. I could still name just about every player on the pitch - and I don't support either team!
Went to both games - outplayed at times, but never outfought!💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙Ran Leeds everywhere at Wembley, didn't see any trouble at Old Trafford. We had the Stretford and outnumbered Leeds by miles oop North! The two best days of my life, apart from the days my kids were born 💙!💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
We were in the middle of 2 European Cup semis with Celtic, this replay after taking 3 games to beat United in the semi ( Chelsea got Watford ) and going for the league. No luck , no trophies and dead on our feet by the end of the season.
good point, had never considered that. Revies Leeds were a great team that should’ve won 2 European Cups. They were that good, I can’t understand how they didn’t win more.
I met Charlie cook, I asked him about the final at Wembley, and he said when they walked onto the pitch his feet sunk into the mud due to them having the house of the year show there, smashing guy, signed fa cup final program for me.
I was 13 years old and persuaded my dad to get tickets ,, he got 2 seats , all I wanted to do was be in the Chelsea end behind the goal ,, so my dad allowed me to change my ticket with a lucky spiv ,,, What a wonderful night ,,, and all the team were British
Tomorrow nights match with Leeds Utd in the FA Cup 5th round 28/2/24 brought me here . I remember being the only Chelsea supporter at Thorpe Middle School in Idle, Bradford W.Yorkshire in 1970. Everybody, but everybody supported Leeds and nobody gave the Blues a chance that April night. I nearly cried when my hero Peter Osgood scored the equaliser with that diving header, and Dave Webb hit the winner. To me that was a greatest Chelsea side ever, even with the recent success of the Abramovich years, to me you cant beat the 1970s squad. Sadly we have lost Johnny Hollins and Tommy Baldwin in the recent months. Only Webb,Harris McCreadie, Dempsey, Cooke and Hinton survive from that great team. If only we could go back to those great days when football was football...... Also wish they would bring back the old Chelsea Badge like at the beginning of the team caption. Hate the present badge . Anybody Agree with above ????
An odd mixture of things going on here - BBC TV coverage with overdubbed commentary from ITV's Brian Moore. But not Moore's original 1970 commentary. It Sounds as if it was done in the 1990s. Also, there's something not right about the crowd noise. I can only assume that ITV lost (wiped) their original coverage of the entire match.
I was there for both finals, 14 years old, I did two paper rounds to pay for my tickets. One of the greatest nights of my life, tears of joy. Magnificent atmosphere. When the F.A. cup was the greatest event. Proper loyal footballers who would be my heroes for many years.
I just watched the full match. Yes it was feisty but mostly I noticed how they never stopped running. For stats fans, I made it 4 shots on target for Chelsea, to Leeds' 9.
great Game and great goals from osgood and jones wonder wot the modern plebs would think about the assists by cook and clarke be wetting their nickers for sure!!!!
Notice right at the beginning when teams are walking out. A single Blue Balloon. Certainly won it for Chelsea the balloon did. Revie tried to bribe the balloon and failed. Ive seen The Blues numerous times all over Europe but wasnt here this night. Isnt it ironic though that when Chelsea won the first ever FA Cup 1970 i was born!. CMON THE CHELS.
70 years old now, I was in the Stretford and, and yes it's false dubbing, because as the hutch was taking that throw, the whole of us in that end plus around were just chanting Chelsea, Chelsea, Chelsea, check out the original BBC Archive, Great night though, got back to London about 5.30 in the morning,
I have an official DVD of the Wembley final and the Old Trafford replay. The replay is sadly overdubbed with Moore's reflective commentary and with non original crowd sounds and this all serves to rob what was a fantastic and (at that time) unique occasion of all its original atmosphere. Fun facts; 1970 FA Cup, Osgood scored in every round; 1970 World Cup, Jairzinho scored in every round.
It's well documented that for some reason (copyright? damaged film or video tape stock?) the original commentary and crowd sounds were absent from the DVD. There's also a short excerpt in the tunnel during the half time break, when there's a sudden change in the commentary team voices and the crowd sounds which sound much more realistic and "real time".
Certainly Leeds dominated but it was not a robbery. Leeds were beaten mentally by a Chelsea team that would simply not give up and had a few players such as Osgood and Cooke who were as good as anything Leeds had, if not better. I sensed this as the match went on when I saw it on telly at the age of 27. Leeds were a good side but could not match Chelsea's determination and ended up still looking a good side but their spirit had gone. Now aged 77 and a Chelsea supporter for 63 years. Come on you Blues!
Rosie6857 hello. Thank you for your honest assessment of the game which I believe as I’ve never seen it and am 30 years old. Chelsea certainly showed greater spirit and the goalkeeper was leaping around like a cat. Great to know you’ve supported Chelsea for so many years. I always wonder what times were like in those days when you were growing up as I’ve only seen life after the 90s. All the best.
@@abubakerrawat7240 Hi! Don't be misled by my name; I am a fellow with a beard, now grey, alas. The name has a complicated derivation. When I first went to Stamford Bridge in 1958 football was not the money-mad business it is now and was much more laid back. And cheaper. A match would cost you 10p which is equivalent to about £7 today. In those days Chelsea were very erratic, sometimes brilliant, sometimes awful and really a bit of a joke. Not a very serious football club. There was no kudos in being a Chelsea supporter but to me that didn't matter in the slightest. Now, thanks to that nice Mr Abramovich, Chelsea are big. It all seems just a bit unreal and in some ways slightly embarrassing but I think I can put up with it.
@@Professor3141 The prize is to win, not to be convincing. Chelsea were not lucky - they just did the important things right. Drogba's header near the end for the equaliser was one of the most stunning bits of skill and bravery I have ever seen even allowing for my natural bias. When Drogba stepped up for that final penalty I just knew he would score. So did the Bayern keeper and probably the whole Bayern team as well. Just as with the 1970 Cup Final replay Chelsea's opponents could not deal with their spirit and sheer will to win.
No atmosphere coz there is no original crowd noise from the match , BBC pictures itv commentary, bizarre !!.fak3 noise, BBC Kenneth Wolstenholme version fantastic real authentic atmosphere
Great game.Went there by car with a few friends. Was only 16. Hoping Leeds would win after dominating the Wembley match. My brother was at the opposite end of the ground as a Chelsea supporter. Fair play to Chelsea for coming from behind in both games to lift the trophy. For me, John Holland was the man of the match, in which all players were excellent. Sad night for me and my fellow Leeds fans, but glad my brother went back to London a happy man.
They weren't diving - they were falling over. You must have got so used to seeing diving in the modern game that you have forgotten what "not-diving" looks like.
