I was a senior in Elizabeth high school, remember the city vehicle's driving down my parents street telling everyone stay in your house over the speaker
Nearby communities in NY and NJ were supposed to be evacuated and it never happened. They had thousands of gallons of dioxin on site along with cyanide. I will never forget the smell as a child.
Might you make that 16mm film available? I may be able to have it digitized and provide you a copy and return the original film. I'm working to preserve such old film of important workplace and environmental events. If so, please email me at mdcatlin@verizon.net
Those firefighters were truly the bravest. I was the director of the then new New Jersey Committee on Safety and Health, located nearby in the industrial area of Linden NJ. We worked with the firefighters, and the disastrous behavior of NIOSH scientists, who mishandled the collection of tests from the firefighters. Their President was a leader like no other, he fought endlessly for the proper protection of firefighters AND the community that lived nearby. I'd love to see any films. Did Mark or Robert contact you catcook?
does anyone have the video footage of the interviews of the fireman that faught this fire. I had a copy and cant find it anywhere on the net. I believe it was haraldo.
Omg this was a huge problem. I am to understand the EPA is practically shut down now thanks to some moronic politicians. My condolences to all involved with that mess.
Did anyone ever think of chemical reactions? You have a mixture of the most poisonous waste ever generated then just stack it up. Next to a river? High school chemistry they must have skipped. Guess that’s how business was ran back then?
