Chemical Patina on a Bowl // How-To (Ep. 71)

In this video I show how I apply silver leaf to the outside of a bowl that I turned. The wood is Butternut supplied by Matt Cremona, Minnesota. After I turned the the bowl I painted the outside with shellac based white primer and then blue Japan color oil paint. I have a video on the entire process of metal leafing and gilding with a chemical patina if more detailed information is needed. The difference is I use loose leaf metals for curved surfaces vs transfer metals for flat surfaces.

Is this it, the modern age of woodworking? When it started I thought you were trying your luck, and it was hard to explain. But alone together with your video, I see this is awesome... and if this made sense, you're a huge strokes fan! Great work Sean! Love it!

hi sir bean how r u ? today i m very happy you solved my big problem I search long time how to patina on silver leaf. thanks a lot sir kindly can u solved my an other problem ?how we can green patina on silver leaf. or different colours on silver leaf. please please please
@SeanRubino
@SeanRubino 6 лет назад
You can get the green patina by leaving the chemical on the surface longer. It will eventually become darker if you leave it on too long though. So with trial and practice you can get a feel of how long to leave the chemical in contact with the silver.

This is really interesting, thank you. I am a silversmith and I would like to add gold foil either to inside or the outside of sterling silver bowls. I know you can do it with the keum-boo technique, but the problem is that these bowls are rather big. To adhere to gold foil, I need to depletion guild them first several times, which can be just a bit dangerous for the formation of firescale. Given the result, I think that silversmiths actually use glue, as you do on wood, but I am not completely sure how to go about it. Do you have any thoughts on the matter?
@SeanRubino
@SeanRubino 3 года назад
That sounds cool. I don’t know about gilding without adhesive so I cannot offer tips for that. If you can use a size and want a really shiny gold surface use water size.

Very interesting! Where are the various foils/chemicals etc procured? I guess I'm looking for internet source. Thanks
@SeanRubino

+Tom Lagatol thanks, Tom! The metal leaf and liver of sulphur can be purchased through Amazon.com, links are in the description. I have purchased other chemicals through artchemicals.com.

Sean Rubino , Sorry I didn't look at the description... This looks to be right up my Mom's alley; she's been painting and making her own pottery for decades! Any good books on the technique you know of? Thanks.
@SeanRubino
@SeanRubino 7 лет назад
+Tom Lagatol I don't know of any books off hand but David Marks is a great resource. He wrote an article for Fine Woodworking Magazine years ago. It is free on the magazine's website. Just search "chemical patina finishes, David Marks" and you should get all the info you really need.

Very cool. I love the idea of thinking it's metal but seeing the wood inside. BIN is shellac-based, isn't it? Is that what you used?
@SeanRubino

Try it on some scrap copper first. I don’t know it if it is food safe. Maybe only do it to the outside of the bowl?

How does this look with 24k gold and sulfur?
@SeanRubino

Gold will not tarnish.
@gary313
@gary313 7 лет назад
Why did you use Japan color?
@SeanRubino
@SeanRubino 7 лет назад
+Gary Zeff three reasons: 1) It has finer pigment for a more pure color. 2) It is oil based so it works well with the gilding size. 3) It can be sanded very smooth without gumming up like latex will.
@gary313

Gold will not tarnish but you can add gold leaf in this same manner.

Sean Rubino I’ve only seen one picture of toned gold in blue and purple, and that’s a Roman coin left buried for thousands of years under sulfuric volcanic ash. May if you use electricity to speed up the process, it might work
@SeanRubino

That sounds like a lot of heat and pressure.
