You might have seen the light behind fireflies. Fireflies have a certain pigment that emits light after some chemical reactions. This phenomenon is known as Chemiluminescence.
The same phenomenon is used to detect and measure the emissions of NOx from engines and industries and the device used for this is known as Chemiluminescence Analyser.
In this video, we have explained what a chemiluminescence analyser is, its construction and how it works.
When nitric oxides (NO) react with ozone, it produces excited nitrous oxides
(NO2*). These excited molecules of nitrous oxides return to their original state after emitting photons. The intensity of the photons released will be proportional to the concentration of the nitric oxide. Therefore, by measuring the intensity of light produced, the NO emission can be measured.
The analyser consists of an ozone generator which generates ozone and a converter which converts all the molecules of NOx in the sample into NO. When the ozone and nitric oxide react inside the reaction chamber, photons are produced and the produced photons are detected by the photomultiplier tube. The photomultiplier tube converts the light energy into electrical energy and then sends it to the display. This shows the total concentration of NOx.
The analyser also uses a three way solenoid valve which can supply the sample directly into the chamber bypassing the converter. This condition will give us the concentration of NO and the difference between the first two readings gives us the concentration of NO2.
Chemiluminescence Analysers are used for continuous monitoring of the exhaust as it is rapid and accurate.
