Yay!!! You are the first I've seen to use a 10" stacker for a rag quilt! I have made so many using collections like that! I use flannel for the backing (usually one solid color) and the interior in a complementary color to avoid cutting the batting. The chenille technique is new to me so will add to my ideas! Fun, thanks!
Having just bought a sewing machine at the weekend and being completely new to quilting this is the perfect project for me! Not too complicated and I love that I can pick it up and put it down and not worry too much about losing counts and my place, thank you for such clear instructions and the awesomely detailed description bar :)
Well you're definitely in the right place to start quilting!! What made you want to start? I love hearing stories of how people get started! Such a fun hobby to have and definitely a great skill!!
I cross stitch, and when picking up supplies saw fat quarters for sale in the craft store, looked up what they were for (Googled whilst instore!) and bought some magazines. I've done some small paper piecing projects, but haven't known where to start with an actual quilt...this one really appeals to me and looks accessible to newbies :D
This is one of my favorites. This tutorial changed my life, well by quilting life. Have made a bunch of these quilts and everyone who gets them, loves them! Thanks Rob!
I am 65 yrs. old & my Mom & all my Grandmother's were quilters. I never wanted to learn how to quilt. I wanted to be out on the tractor with my Dad. I did learn how to sew at an early age but not quilt. This month after watching numerous RU-vid videos on quiting I decided I would sit down & make a quilt. My 1st was a lap size tie quilt. It turned out OK so I then jumped into the deep end of the quilting pool & decided to make a Queen size quilt. This time it was the Rail Fence pattern. Whew I got through that one too. Today I finished a Twin size quilt of the Log Cabin pattern. Needless to say 3 quilts in 3 weeks & I am hopelessly HOOKED ! I think I will try this one next. Great video & instructions. THanks. Why do you quilt ?
Hey, Carlene Vasseur!! Thanks for watching this video! Also, thanks for sharing that story with us! I always justify my quilting addiction by saying that there are worse things in life to be addicted to! :) That helps, right??
I just read your comment, I hope you are still having as much fun. I am much more of a garment sewer, but after many years of my mom nagging me to try quilting I gave it a try. It is completely different, but I agree it is kind of addicting. I did get bogged down with the quilting component of my first really large quilt, a king, I have some picking out to do and of course that is not a lot of fun!
What I do is pick up the diagonal corners and just rub the entire square together.....it will work too.....but your a wonderful teacher, I have learned so much from your videos......even though I’ve been quilting for 25+ years! Thank you!
Thanks for the video it inspired me to make a friend a gift of Seahawk lap quilt. Instructions was very helpful. Washing it now then will brush it out for the full effect.
I make these blocks with the chenille done to it but I make them with flannel and make potholders and give them as gifts. I put a pattern piece on top and on bottom both facing out then the layers afe solids or small prints like pokadots or stripes but solid colors are great (and cost less). The flannel works well to keep the heat from your hands and you can sew the lines anyway you want . remember leave the bottom 2 layers un cut
Omgggg!!! U sound so much like chef bobby!! And u r so bubbly, I like that, thanks for the lovely video.. Please show us how to adjust tention on the upper and the bobbin thread.. Many thanks!!
Gizmo b for your sewing machine Gizmo, you will have to refer to your sewing manual. I don't think Man Sewing can direct you as all machines are different.
I SEE YOU FROM MEXICO!! NICE CHANNEL BEAUTIFUL QUILT. I LOVE YOUR STYLE. I HOPE TO SEE YOU ON THE FUTURE. I CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE VIDEOS. I AM YOUR FAN!!!!
I love your videos! I was curious as to where I would send a photo! I love how helpful you are and I love to see a man behind a sewing machine! 😍😍😍 I would love to share my chenille inspired quilt with you! 😍😘😆😁 thank you for all you do!!! 😘😘😘
Thank you so much for tuning in, Emily! Feel free to share a photo with the Man Sewing Facebook page or with the Man Sewing Instagram using #mansewing. Can't wait to see it!
I assume that the final step is to sew along the entire perimeter with a 1" seam allowance as you would a regular rag quilt, to lock in the outside raw edges on both the chenille and rag blocks?
I love the bloopers! Great tutorials Thank You! Have you used any minky? I have a new grandaughter coming and would like to make some blankets or maybe a quilt. any suggestion?
Just checking here! The chenille layer has 5 layers from the layercake and 1 from the backing, so 6 layers total.... right? Thank you, I love your tutorials M
so for the edges you stitch the edges to keep the fabric secure? Love the technique for the cutter.. Are you using the cutter to cut thru 3 layers of fabric?
Cute quilt , beautiful print fabrics, I love Michael Miller fabrics anyway ,Chenille ,great idea however ,unless you have more money and yardage than God, I think it's a total waste of money and material. But this is the first time that I have seen this kind of block and I watch a lot of tutorials.
+Ella Duhon Thanks for your comment. I don't agree that it's a waste of money, especially if you love heavy quilts! Because of all the layers in this, it's heavy and VERY warm! I did appreciate your comment though! :)
One could use leftover scraps for the inbetween layers in coordinating colors, as you don't see those prints at all, only the raggy edges...then use the 'nicer' prints for back and front!
you are so fun! i just got a machine for christmas and am dying to make a rag quilt. i noticed you didn't do any anchoring... is that unnecessary in piecing? also i am needing to get a walking foot. is there a difference between a quilting foot and a walking foot?
Back stitching really isn't necisariy in quilting because you end up securing it all together later with the actual quilting. You can certainly use the same presser foot for quilting as you normally would for regular sewing. You may need a different foot for free motion quilting but not just for piecing. I hope this helps!
thank you! and i did get a walking foot after all and love it. thanks for the explanation about anchoring! i've finished my second quilt now and am about to open my etsy shop! 👏🏼😂
Has anyone made this quilt yet? I was looking for recommendations on fabric. I wondered if the middle layers of fabric mattered as much? Do they show? Would a lower quality of cotton fabric work for this project? Thanks for any thoughts on this...
love this quilt.. ....However.... could you PLEASE do a tutorial on the chenille tape? you could have a ball with all of the freestyle things you can do with it. I've seen everything from monograms to full size bed quilts. Dont know how much it costs, but it uses only a backing fabric, a top fabric and you sew the tape on... wash... and wahla.
Loved ur tutorial but when I went to the site where u got the material it doesn't give prices it would be nice to know how to buy from Michael Miller fabrics.
+Joyce Bower I don't think you can buy directly from Michael Miller unless you're a fabric store, check out the description below the video to get the supplies. We go through Missouri Star Quilt Company and they have the best prices around!!
Man quilter here! Yea Rob great tutorial where can I get a chenille cutting tool and is that the right name for it. I'll look on Missouri Star Quilt Company. Glad you are doing tutorials now....We needed a mans touch! keep 'em coming.
Hey aera1959! Thanks for watching and supporting! Here is a link to get that tool, you'll never go back once you use this! www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/detail/7461/havels/-/chenille-technique-rotary-cutter
Also new to quilting I"m recently retired and have lots of time on my hand love, all of your tutorials especially the skateboard quilt have three grandson plan on making all three a quilt. Keep doing what you do you should get a bumper sticker REAL MEN SEW LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+Kevin Howard The edges are actually finished like a rag quilt where you sew it shut and then snip to create a rag look. I hope this helps answer your question!
Wish he would tell us how much fabric you need if you don't use a layer cakes. Not everyone is a seasoned sewer. Also he never says how big the quilt is. How many rows. Thanks Rob
