Cherie Currie talks about Dakota Fanning's portrayal of her in the movie about the band The Runaways, and she also talks about reuniting with Joan and the band.
I was born in the early 60's and I tell you, the late 70's and 80's were the bomb! Best days of my life. There were SO MANY good bands just like this one, but loved this group for being female and fantastic.
Having been an original fan of the Runaways from the 70s, I had very low expectations for this movie but I was pleasantly suprised at how accurately they caught the feeling of the band and the time period. I highly recommend it.
I honestly didn't get a CHANCE to discover the Runaways or Jett's solo career because Jett's first solo album came out a year before I was born. Happy to say as a 28 year old I'm just now discovering their music and I feel right at home. It's awesome.
Cherie you definately have had an intersting life.Your eccentricity payed off starting from when you were only 15 and your dreams come true.I loved your book and the movie.Never a dull moment,Isee u as a very strong woman and their are a lot of people that couldn't of stopped using drugs like u did.I will always love The Runaways.
Loved this band. Same age then; the different scenes, the social climate, the angst, the changes. Cream magazine, the Whiskey, Rocky Horror. Haven't seen the movie. But I hope that, if not a thing else, people who see it will get some idea of how revolutionary this band was. They kicked some major ass for a bunch of kids. RIP Sandy.
I am a huge fan of The Runaways since the seventies, their very beginning. Never thought a film would be made to show their lives. It is nice to see how good they were, despite bad critics at the time. I loved punk rock, and they were into it. Loved the film.
The Runaways movie made me listen a lot to their music (I only knew of Joan Jett before) but now I have discovered a lot of the late 70's, early 80's music scene. Truly a day of breaking new ground in music and trying stuff nobody had before. A rebel era raising a middle finger to the establishment. Today it's just an era of re-using all the old stuff and getting "influenced" (read copying) of all the things they did back then. The more I listen to more I realize this We live in sad times :(
Actually you're right. I heard Momsen do a cover of Fiona Apple's "Criminal" and I think she did a really good job. Plus she's got the look...the corset thing and all.
No i didnt realize it was based on her book. I know jett had alot of input in the movie but wasnt sure if cherie was involved at all. I know alot of people wondered why she left the band so soon & IF she had stayed how famous would they have become. They were a huge influence on me, i was their age when the band formed....god, im old.
The seventies music was the best imo...most were true musicians who actually played their instruments and wrote their own songs. I don't listen to what is considered popular today (Cyrus, Spears, Rhianna, Bieber, etc.) but there's lots of indie musicians who are just awesome. They've just decided not to sell their souls to the record companies or rely on sex to sell their music.
what do you think the runaways were? sex were sexualized to sell records. Led Zeppelin too. "sex sells" has been going on since ever. indie bands do it too. the yeah yeah yeahs, metric etc.
Yes, I'm here in 2019. 8 yrs later because I felt nostalgic. Plus I was watching twilight, which led to google searches about Robert Pattison actually singing. I'm a fan of his sexy voice. Then went on to google Kristen to see if she's legit gay now. Stumbled ontokristen and Dakota dating..what?? Then I ended up here. 🤪. Then I got nostalgic. 🤣
The RUNAWAYS ended the double standard conditions for all women in the rock world. Very, very impressive considering the time it took place, mid 1970's. BRAVO, BRAVO !!!!
@tawn Can't you tell-it's made using paint! I think thet they got this picture in google, becose it was best they could come up with! so they used this picture Hoping that not all will notice that!
@TheHammerheart - Most of me is saying that if you put Joan and Lita in a room together you best make sure that all sharp objects have been removed. I've had a vibe for years that those two did NOT part on the best of terms.
I enjoyed the Runaways when they came out an was glad they made the movie... It was a shame that the manager they had took their money. These were young girls a head of their time an just wanting to make music, they didn't know the business part of it that's why they had Kim the freak........They all were great. RIP Sandy one of the bad ass Drummers
@TheRealLifeOfRiley Actually, she is a very skilled and talented chainsaw artist...so she definitely has other things going for her besides relying on leftovers for her time in The Runaways. She was just promoting the movie and obviously had a blast doing it. Also, I think she looks INCREDIBLY hawt for her age (or any age, for that matter) especially after years of drug abuse.
@greendayusa11 - I'm happy to see Cherie clean and sober in the end. I'll give anything she records in collaboration with Joan a listen at least. Watching Cherie do "Cherry Bomb" on stage now though is well...awkward. Joan can still pull it off because Joan just has that much Rock cred. Cherie looks like she should be the mom of the 17 year old girl singing it, standing in the wings off stage worried that her daughter is growing up way too fast....
@TheOnlyAttrition I don't think so, she has a really good (impressive) career behind her at only 19 ! And she plays so well so many different caracters !
they should have let kim fowley produce the movie. with all his flaws, the fucking guy really knew what he was doing. he understood show biz and what audiences wanted.
I love that fucking movie...It makes me want to start a band. I've gotta guitar in my closet collecting dust -_- I wish there was a time machine that I could hop into
When you're in the entertainment business you are told to give positive comments to your fellow actor or musician as part of good business practices until they are told to be enemies to sell records or promote a movie. ..
@shortydog27 I liked the movie but yeah, you're right. Lita is my favorite runaway and it's a shame the movie steamrolled her. She has a "devil may care" attitude which makes her all the more cool.
@aubzdall517 I agree 100 percent,..Joan Jett ROCKS. Her and Lita Ford were the most talented ones in the band. Even though Cherie Curie didn't have the best voice, she had that certain "something" that seemed to work.. I think she was chosen more for her jailbait look and "I don't give a crap" attitude, rather than for her "dazzling" vocal skills. At least she didn't lip sync like most popstars do, nowadays. lol
Sadly thats right, not that I think the relationship is so cold at the moment. I also think even Lita could forget about it for 1-3 gigs. Maybe a charity concert for breast cancer or something like that.
@EdwardFORever96 I've often thought that very thing. But eventually I realized that the good music of the seventies would be in the hands of the pretentious trendy-types just like it is today. Being born after means that we can know about the awesome parts of decades past without having to put up with the people that would have surrounded the awesome parts.
It left the biggest power out Lita Ford ! She played the best Riffs and came up with most of the music ! And i might add , was not intimitated by Kim Fowley , as the others were .
Dont forget Jackie Fox, she was the true hottie of the band. Even if she only will be able to play a couple of chords due to here diagnostic it will be worth it, just name a place in the world and I will be there.
@ritter89 I normally don't respond to things on youtube nor am I fighting her battles for her. What I am doing is letting you know that maybe next time you tell someone to stop relying on Hollywood and popular trends..You'll stop and think that maybe that young person is a fan because they have parents who influenced their taste in music...
In my little world of Progressive rock and mainstream top 40, the Runaways never entered on my radar. For all I know, the story of the Runaways didn't begin until Joan Jett had a hit with "I Love Rock n Roll". It was a great song at the time. I was only 16 then. Later Lita Ford managed her way to mainstream. If it weren't for these two I would've never had any interest in seeing a movie about some band I never heard of called the Runaways.
+sivadmg It is. I don't like saying so, but it is, a medicore song written by a beginning guitarist and a cynical middle-aged man. "I Love Playing With Fire" is a far, FAR better song. But Cherie didn't sing that one, and I guess she needs a theme songs to be identified with, so "Cherry Bomb" it is.
Yeah you're probably right but I still think Joan Jett is great. Sure there are better singer/musicians but she's obviously got something special as is evident in her fan base. Don't get me wrong..I like Cherie Currie. She had a decent voice but it was her dynamic stage presence and attitude that made everything work. Funny because in one of her younger interviews she seemed so shy but she was the total opposite onstage.
