Shura Cherkassky in a rehearsal of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.2 in G major Op.44. The actual concert performance from 1993 is already uploaded. This is a complete performance of the concerto but without the main cadenza of the first movement. Cherkassky and Svetlanov appear relaxed and there are no problems with ensemble.

Wonderful music and playing! ....Cherkassky is in fine form, especially for his age (84) Thank you for sharing this!

A wonderful video giving a rare & precious glimpse of Cherkassky at work, as well as some marvellous music-making. Unbelieveable that at such an age he could still play such a taxing work, but even if some of his former élan has steadied, he still finds so many nuances and details and all the essential of rythm and sparkle are there in plenty. Svetlanov was also a great favorite, i heard him often; it's great to find them together here. Thank you so much for posting this.

Cherkassky helps salvage the composer's reputation, by giving the piano part's notes a kind of musical coherence. Bravo, Shura. You are missed.

"Salvage" the composer's reputation. Since when did this composer's reputation need "salvaging"?

Amazing indeed, considering his age! (plus the problem of acclimatizing -- if he came directly from Europe there is a time difference of at least 7 hours...no problems with concentration whatsoever!) This was filmed in Tokyo, the orchestra is most probably the NHK Symphony Orchestra.

This is certainly a fine performance but it's such a pity that they use the truncated version (by Siloti) for the second movement. In the revised original (by Tchaikovsky) there's much more of a triple concerto feel to it and it's gorgeous. I enjoyed it... but!

At times this music sounds like a transcription of a piece written for a small group, with piano accompaniment. Shura's playing is, as always, appropriate and distinctive at the same time. He is missed.
