2Juiced4Me Well, because I don’t believe human sacrifice is a joke. That scene is partially inaccuratly delivered, but there really were men who did give up thier diginity in order to attempt to save the lives of others. If you think that is funny, all good. Humour is great, and it helps with the pacing and storytelling, but the whole thing is a tragedy. Laughing at them - considering that we are told that the majority didn’t reach 40 - is the equivillent of pissing on their graves. Is the scene funny? Yes. Should those real life people & their families have their memory forever embedded in “humor in a dim situation”, no.

Poor Akimov, they couldn't show him because by the point he was interviewed his face had peeled away, parts of his skull were showing. The directors felt it would be too much. As for the firefighters being buried, it was bad enough, but the concrete truck showing up just seems so much more horrific...it kind of really sinks in that these guys are gone and will never be seen again. In reality it was a struggle to talk, and towards the very end they couldn't at all. Their mouths had swollen so much from the radiation. Lt. Pravik spent the last days of his life blinking to communicate. The actual evacuation took place about 36 hours after the accident. It was a combination of not wanting to admit to a problem, especially to the Americans who could see this all from satellite and any spies the Soviets thought might be inside the area, and the fact that it hadn't really struck how big of an issue this was among the leadership The problem with Ludmilla interacting with her husband is at first she doesn't think he is dying, and after she realizes it she wants to comfort him. She, along with the vast majority of the population, don't know what radiation is or does. Accidents were kept secret, and atomic energy was of such importance to the state that lots of information on it were state secrets. Episode 5 explains the whole series of events, i won't spoil it and I hope no one else does.

The shoes that Lyudmilla was holding have a story of their own. As one account goes, Lyudmilla promised Vasili that she would bury him in his favorite shoes, which brought him a degree of comfort in his final moments. After he died, she brought the shoes for the attendants to put on him, but his legs and feet were too swollen and deformed from edema for them to fit, so they were forced to bury him with no shoes on. Very soon after the burial, Lyudmilla was plague with recurring dreams where Vasili would come to her, wearing no shoes, asking her to help him look for the shoes she had promised him. Eventually, she consulted a priest, and they had a second funeral, this time burying the shoes, and after that the dreams ceased. I wished they had articulated the dangers of secondary radiation exposure better. The dying first responders were not dangerous to touch. The reason that touching was discouraged was to protect them from germs. Remember, with dead bone marrow and a failed immune system, even a trivial pathogen can be deadly. The reason they still hermetically sealed the bodies during burial is to prevent the radionuclides they inhaled/ingested from leeching into the soil and being inadvertently inhaled/injested by someone else in the future. But most of all, the miniseries does itself a disservice by repeating the implication that Lyudmilla's baby somehow absorbed the radiation from her. That is simply not the reality of ionizing radiation. The fact is that the baby was exposed to the same energies as the mother--while in Pripyat--and being a fetus, was less equipped to withstand it. I am not certain if this was a misunderstanding at the time, but it unfairly paints Lyudmilla in a negligent light (she dislikes the miniseries for this reason).

The agony of the death of poor Toptunov in particular. On top of all the pain and unimaginable horror of watching your body literally rot around you, he died wracked with guilt, thinking the disaster was his fault. Imagine dying at 25, thinking you'd condemned ten of millions to terrible suffering and death because of some unknown error in your conduct.

One point of contention: it's important to distinguish between radiation and radioactive particles (like the dust you see falling on the spectators at the bridge in episode 1). You can be exposed to radiation but it doesn't make you radioactive by itself unless you've also taken up some of those particles (they got onto your skin or clothing, you inhaled or ingested them, that sort of thing). The exception to this is neutron radiation, which literally changes the nuclei that it exposes into heavier isotopes which are often themselves radioactive. But neutron radiation really wasn't a factor at Chernobyl for the most part, compared to the main three (alpha, beta, and gamma).

The miners were the single most powerful political bloc in the Soviet Union. If they had said no, the government wouldn't have had the power to force them to do it. They need the labor the miners do and the miners knew that. This is why they could be so blatantly disrespectful without worrying about punishment. They did it because it needed to be done, not because they could be easily forced.

The soviet union was really big on science. it almost became a cult for them. But they were also really big in supporting the State. Gorbachev said when he toured around the USSR all the people told him no matter what he does the state must do whatever it can to avoid war (even if they starve) Memory of all the wars from 1914 till present gave the state lots of leniency . Lots of people just went with it for different reasons. The producer has a couple interviews about all that stuff he learned and he also did a podcast for every episode. I really think anyone that likes this show should listen to them.

Most of them had no real idea of what might happen to them. The firefighters in particular had no clue, they didn't even know the reactor core itself blew up, they had no real understanding of what that would even imply, just like the nuclear engineers didn't know the core exploded either or weren't sure or didn't want to believe it. The miners and the rest had an idea it was dangerous but they didn't know the science and with radiation being invisible... Plus, the soviet leadership tried to hide it and then to downplay it. The main thing about this disaster is that it's a direct result of the communist way of doing things, policies, mentalities, etc, as u will see in the last episode. This was something that could only have happened in the communist block

In reality, the divers didn't have any light. They felt their way to the valve and felt their way back. The flashlights really did die. The nurse was a doctor. In reality, Lyudmilla took care of several people because the hospital was really overwhelmed. Her husband's decline was far worse, and her account of it in *Voices from Chernobyl* is unflinchingly brutal. (Lyudmilla didn't like how she was portrayed, but she refused to be a consultant because she wanted to leave it behind her.) Boris and Valery did become close friends with respect for each other during this. In reality, the other nuclear operator couldn't speak with no face, so he communicated with code. They didn't speak Russian or with Russian accents because they knew they wouldn't do them justice. (It would have taken a Ukrainian and Russian cast.)

This is the toughest episode for me. But I will note one inaccuracy. It isn't an inaccuracy for the production, it was not well understood at the time. Once the firemen had their clothes off and were showered down, they would no longer be a contamination hazard. So all the warnings for her to not touch her husband were not necessary. Exposure to him had no effect on her or her child. It was her own exposure that made a difference. As I understand it the healthcare professionals did not understand it at the time.
