That was a real newscast from the time. The newscaster/anchor reporting was Peter Jennings of ABC'S World News Tonight(The nightly national news brocast of ABC).

@@CyberManor not only is the ABC news an actual footage, the fire department call in the first episode was also the actual phone call(most part of it) made that night, the “Vnimanye” evacuation announcement is also authentic.

Fun(?) fact: The scuba divers never did get their torches working again, they had to finish the mission in pitch blackness. It was left out because they figured people would find it too far -fetched.

We should be teaching our children the names of the three men who entered the water-filled basement of the power plant. They are heroes and should be known world-round as heroes.

Yes, the radioactivity sound is very stressful. The 3 men had to get to a switch thing to let the water out so it doesn’t explode when the lava gets to the tanks.

@@CyberManor And that really happened. You can look up a youtube video that shows the helicopter going down from the time - and compares it to the show's recreation. They are practically identical.

13:45 yes we werent allowed to play outside nor to drink milk. and even today some boars and mushrooms in the forrests are highly contaminated with Caesium from Chernobyl .. even hundred of kilometres away. cant imagine what actually was going on over in the sovjet sector

I was 9 years old when Chernobyl happened and I lived close to Frankfurt. We were'nt allowes to play outside. I can remember this still so well. It was a very scary time for me.

This event actually changed the amount of radioactivity on Earth. It is used as a way to date the creation of artifacts, based on the level of radiation in the material.
@ronikawilliams2696

Also, remember that radioactive isotopes are molecules/atoms. They have substance. It would be like having extra fine glitter on your cloths and someone touches you. The glitter would get on their hands. The clothing would have the radioactive isotopes (particles) on them. Every time someone touches them, they pick up those particles like the glitter. They also stay radioactive for something like 45000 years???

So great that you're watching this. Such a well made miniseries. Eagerly awaiting your next 3 episodes of Chernobyl.

Happy you’re watching this. There is actually real footage for comparison on youtube, aftee you are done with the series, take a look. It’s astonishing how realistic they did it in the show, very well done. Also, the firefighter clothes is still in the basement of the hospital. There’s footage of that too.

The radiation is essentially radiated from particles of radioactive matter, so what's spreading are such particles, which can quickly end up in tissues when ingested, inhaled, or exposed to mucous membranes in general; think of them like tiny pieces of coal, except instead of radiating infrared radiation that you experience as heat, they radiate ionizing radiation that destroys your tissues and your very genetic material (DNA) itself, and instead of being extinguished when doused in water or left alone, they don't go out for a long, long time (some isotopes for millions of years).

Just like in every self-respecting totalitarian regime, people of the USSR were kept in line by the KGB, the notorious Secret Police. People were heavily supervised, even the private phone lines were really not that private. Even a slightest statement against the State (or statements that could be seen as such) could go to wrong ears and gotten you into serious trouble. So people had to learn how to speak on code language, as we saw happening with Ulyana and that other lady on this episode.

Even music was like that; during Stalin's time, if a piece didn't spend enough time in major keys, it could be decried as being intended to make the people more pessimistic. That got slightly better after Stalin's death, and was more relaxed by Gorbachev's time, but it was truly insane how far the government would go to label people "enemies of the state."

@@nathanmead9585 well, I come from a country that was a neighbor to the USSR the whole time of its existance (and the Russian Federation, nowadays). My country was actually the only one of the neighbours of the Soviet Union which wasnt occupied by Soviets during the WW2. We kind of lost the fight, but we kept our independence, however.

There was a helicopter brought down in that manner but it wasn't directly down to the incident, it was pilot error and it happened some time after the initial explosion. So a bit of factual dramatic licence was taken here. There is an *extremely* good companion podcast available where the shows creator explains what they did and why. There's an edition for each episode plus a bonus one but don't listen to each one until you've seen the episode.

If you thought episode 2 upped the anti on episode 1, then better brace yourself for episode 3! This is where the horror part of the horror movie really hits home. That's don't think episode 4 will be an easier watch.... it isn't. BTW they will describe the control rods as having graphite "tips" which is slightly misleading, there's a length of graphite (not just a little tip) so that the rod can be used as an accelaror when it's up, and as a break when it's down. This allows the use of cheap low grade fuel.... a cut-cost design. This is very different to most reactors in the West that use high pressure liquid water as the "accelerator". This has the safety feature that if things start getting too hot, the water boils into steam and it stops acting as an accelerator, a self limiting process.
