So for reference with regards to Bilbo's 111th Birthday: The average Hobbit lifespan is about 100 years. They age a bit slower than humans, but still much faster than elves or dwarves. The oldest Hobbit up to this point was known as "The Old Took," and was a relative of Bilbo's, and he died at 130. So 111, while still impressive, is not unheard of for a Hobbit. What makes Bilbo's case special is that he still looks like he's in his 50s or 60s. The joke around the shire is that he's "Well preserved." That said, Hobbits come of age at 33. And it's interesting to me that Frodo and Bilbo have the same birthday (September 22nd), and Bilbo chose his 111th birthday to disappear because it was also Frodo's 33rd birthday, which meant he was old enough now to inherit Bilbo's home. Of course, the book contains a 17 year time skip that the movies don't. So when they go on their journey, the 4 Hobbits in the books are aged as follows: Frodo: 50 (same age as Bilbo when he left for his adventure) Sam: 39 Merry 34 Pippin: 29 So Pippin and Merry are very young. Pippin isn't even considered an adult yet, which explains a lot of their behavior.

I would suggest the extended editions for the next two movies. It's less necessary for Fellowship, as most fo the extended scenes are more time in The Shire and in Rivendell and just fill out some back story and history. However, the extended version for Two Towers and Return of the King contains some important plot and characterization points that don't get explained in the short versions.

I agree. I like to watch a lot of reactions to this trilogy because their my favorite films and people who watch the extended editions for their first viewing tend to be less confused than people who watch the theatrical. There’s really only one extended scene in the fellowship that’s important. For the other two movies thought while some added scenes are fan service most are important. They are important to the plot/understanding character motivations. Some people are put of by the length when they see it but from what I’ve seen most reactors don’t even realize how long it’s been when they reach the end because the films are so good. Plus, the extended editions are the way Peter Jackson wanted them released, the only reason he didn’t was because the studios gave him time limits in order to be released in theaters because you want to have as many showings in a day as possible.
@sunfurycommenting1013
@sunfurycommenting1013 2 года назад
The extended editions are a must imo, as they provide much more depth to the characters and their motivations. A lot gets missed in the theatrical versions that is vital to some characters, as well as clarifying some of the lore. Highly recommend the extended editions!

The reason Bilbo and Frodo become invisible when they wear the ring is because they are mortal. They don't actually become invisible, but are switched to the "shadow realm" that is kind of a spiritual plane. Sauron is a maiar spirit and so is Gandalf. They exist on both planes because they are maiar who have taken human form and that is why they do not disappear when they wear the ring.

@@CyberManor btw, i don't know if you know this, or if you've read some of the comments talking about it, but here are some things that are really important to the plot; 1- the Ring corrupts by taking a persons deepest most intense desire, and making them believe that they could attain it via taking the ring and using it. 2- The books explain merry and pippins involvement a whole lot better, and that's why they tag along. 3- further on in the movies, there are fell beasts, they are NOT dragons, but i won't spoil any more about them 4- Galadriel's gifts are super important; Mery and Pippins daggers of the Noldorin can injure the Nâzgul, minor plot point later; Frodo's cloak can disguise him as a rock; Hairs were a valuable gift in the past, as they retain smell and serve as a remeberance and let you remind yourself of someone dear to you; the "light" vial that galdriel gives frodo is the remnant of long gone trees that were essentially the original sun and moon, so very much "holy" 5- Nazgul "Fear" water because it is holy, as Eru Illuvatar even uses it to destroy a small continent in the books, where men worshipped Sauron's boss, which is also where Sauron the deciever lost his ability to change into a beautiful elvish or human form, aka his "fair form", which is why he wears that over the top and super intimidating armour.

In regards to The Ring, think of it as a character with a mind and will of it’s own. It can change size on its own, which is why it slips out of people’s hands. This is not an accident. The closer to Mordor and Mount Doom The Ring gets, the more powerful it becomes.

@albinorhino6

Desperate, powerful…in this case it’s kind of the same thing. When Sauron made the ring, as a safeguard against its destruction, he enchanted it or whatever so that it’s strength increased the closer it got to the place it was made. The idea being that if anyone brought it to Mt Doom to destroy it, they would be overcome by the ring. This happened to both Isildur, and Frodo. What Sauron was never able to foresee was the ring being destroyed by Frodo and Gollum’s greed for the ring itself. The ring’s own power was its ultimate undoing.

In the Elder days, like WAY before these movies the original dark lord/fallen Angel corrupted a butt ton of elves to make orcs out of spite. J.R.R Tolkien was probably the Original fantasy author. He started writing the hobbit in the trenches during WW1. He was deeply affected by industrialization and war and he wrote themes along those lines. He was a professor of Angli Saxon and created 4 or 5 of his own languages which he incorporated in the stories. These movies were over a decade in the making

"Those two firework dudes are just tagging along." Yep and it's a good thing too... although I've just started listening to audiobooks recently and I have to say, the movies do shortchange Merry and Pippin a bit in that sense... In the book, it takes Gandalf a while to get information on the ring and Frodo has a lot more time to prepare before he leaves the shire... During that time, Merry and Pippin realize Frodo is troubled and figure out why and they decide to join him and Sam to Frodo get out of the Shire. Respect to them for that.

"Standing on the shoulder" is an incorrect way of putting it, for LOTR specifically. The making of these movies is an endeavor unlike any other. Each department was given its due amount of respect and attention, from the writing, acting, concept art, costumes, set design, special effects...and of course, legendary music. You could say, it's like a Fellowship-type effort, perfectly put together and forming a whole.

@@CyberManor do you recognize Bilbo? He was the robot in Alien. Gandalf was hiding his power. He would always use the least amount of power that he could in every situation. He was a minor deity. Not a mortal human at all. He also possessed one of the 3 elven rings of power. I think his Elven ring had a power for finding things. Gandalf was always doing that. He was searching for the ring. For Golum, for Bilbo. At Helms Deep he found all the soldiers who had been scattered and brought them back. Aragorn was a descendant of half elves. Half human and half elven. Who chose to be human and mortal. There is a whole story about them. They were the Numenoreans. They lived in Numenor. They became so powerful. Even the gods feared them. They came to middle earth and captured Sauron and brought him to Numenor in chains. But they were corrupted by Sauron. He could still appear good then. 90 percent of them were corrupted by Sauron and tried to fight the gods and were defeated. The 10 percent who were not corrupted came back to Middle Earth and made great cities and an Empire. They formed an alliance with the Elves and defeated Sauron. That was the opening scene of the movie. Isuldur was the son of their King. His father was killed by Sauron in the battle. He became king and seized the ring. So Aragorn is not exactly human. He had lived for hundreds of years at this point. Gondor is the Empire of the good Numenoreans in middle earth. But it's thousands of years old and in decline. The elven blood is in decline and most are now just regular humans.

Quick note that is usually misunderstood on the Nazgul and water. They stopped at the river when the hobbits got on Bucklebury Ferry because the river was too deep to cross on horse. When they are chasing Arwen (carrying Frodo), they stop at the river because it is the border of Imladris (Rivendell) and they are wary of the power of Elrond and the other powerful Elves there (and for good reason as we see when they do enter the river).
@kateiannacone2698
@kateiannacone2698 2 года назад
So the movie has the last 3 members of the Fellowship as kind of an accident, but in the book, it was very intentional on Elrond's part to send a party of nine to destroy the ring because there are nine nazgul. They're meant to be the opposite reflection of them. He was originally gonna send two more of his own people instead of Merry and Pippin, but they persuaded him by saying he would have to send them home tied up in bags to keep them from following the group.
@Pixelologist
@Pixelologist 2 года назад
Indeed, the Ring abandoned Gollum....just as it had betrayed Isildur earlier. The Ring IS another character in the story with a will of its own. It manipulates and corrupts those unlucky enough to come into contact with it and its goal is always to return to its master, Sauron.

Always fun to watch new viewers' reactions to these films! Some non-spoilery background details to help flesh things out: Hobbit lifespans are longer than humans and culturally they approach age differently. A hundred years is an average lifespan; legal 'coming of age' happens at 33. The films compress the timeline and play with the four hobbits' canonical ages, but in the books Frodo leaves the Shire seventeen years after Bilbo does, which makes him fifty at the time. (The other three are younger, with Pippin the baby of the group at 29). The Order are five Maiar (angelic beings) who've been sent to help the Free Peoples (Elves, Dwarves, Men, etc.) resist Sauron (a Maia who essentially went rogue and flounced off to Middle Earth in order to nurse an enormous personal grudge against Aragorn's ancestors for millennia). A certain amount of tension exists because Saruman was really into the whole idea but Gandalf basically had to be told to do it, and then he turned down the position of head of the Order and Saruman got it as the second choice. Saruman also thinks Gandalf is kind of a tit for being interested in something as pointless and boring as people: what he's interested in are powerful artifacts... like rings (and the palantiri: the 'seeing stones'. They're the creation of one person who died thousands of years ago without telling anyone how they were made and nobody's been able to reverse-engineer the process, so they're super-rare and super-valuable.) While the Ringwraiths can cross water, they're weak and vulnerable around it so they'll only do it as a last resort. And fire is something that they particularly fear, which is a thing that always bugs me about the film treatment of the attack on Weathertop. In the source material, the fire's built deliberately because it's the best protection they have at night when the wraiths are strongest. It was a perfectly reasonable choice given the limitations of the medium but the way it plays out in the book is more narratively consistent. Fun fact: co-writer Fran Walsh (who's also Peter Jackson's partner) provided a lot of the audio used to build the Ringwraiths' screams!

To quickly add some further context, the Ringwraiths will only cross water when their leader is present, hence the wraith that tells Arwen to "Give up the halfling" is also the first one to enter the water, and is front and center in the framing of the shots. I've talked to people who think that the strongest of the Nine was only introduced in the third movie, but he's around in the entire trilogy if you know how to pick him out.

"High Fantasy" is generally the classical literary term to describe swords and sorcery fantasy relying chiefly upon pre-Enlightenment mythological tropes. There are many, many sub-genres. The Lord of the Rings is special in that regard, as the progenitor of modern fantasy and the inspiration for the invention of tabletop role-playing games via D&D. The Pulitzer Committee awarded the trilogy, Book of the Millennium, drawing a straight line from the New Testament, through the Arthurian Grail Myths, and directly to The Lord of the Rings, as the forward vanguard of Western metaphysical thought.

The more powerful the person wearing the ring is, the more control over it, and its powers they have. Bilbo and Frodo, and even your average human is not that powerful, so they really can only become invisible, or more accurately enter the unseen world. Sauron created the ring, and it is a good portion of Sauron’s life force that are in the ring, so obviously he has the most control over it. The ring would enhance his other abilities, and allow him to do many other things besides entering the unseen world (which he could choose to do by choice rather than default) with the ring. Other powerful people would also be able to do more than just turn invisible, but since they didn’t create the ring, ultimately they would become slaves to it.

There are several sub-genres of fantasy High fantasy or epic fantasy - such as Lord of the Rings, where the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Wizards (good or evil) wield amazing power. Huge, powerful scary monsters like dragons, and huge armies of smaller monsters, like orcs. Sword & sorcery - such as Conan the Barbarian, only the strong survive, and most magic is evil. The bad guy is usually just a human with a lust for power. Fewer monsters, more humans. War and violence. Big swords, big muscles. Modern fantasy (sometimes called "urban fantasy") - such as Harry Potter - set in the modern world, often a hidden, magical world that normal people aren't aware of. But sometimes, out in the open, like Onward - where magic and magical creatures exist alongside modern technology. Cross-worlds fantasy - such as The Wizard of Oz and The Chronicles of Narnia - where someone from the "real" world gets transported to an alternate, magical world - often where there are no humans at all, and the world is very, very different from our own. Swashbuckling fantasy - maybe like Pirates of the Caribbean (sort of), Three Musketeers, Robin Hood. Not so much magic. Maybe none at all. There's politics and intrigue. There are some others, but those are the main ones.

I would describe the setting as a transition between ancient times and the dark ages. Something that is more apparent in the books is that those cultures we discover in lotr are living in the ruins of greater civilisations, like the broken down statues or the weather top ruin. Comparison to medieval England, that built its towns often in the ruins of Roman cities. Also cultures like the Dunedain, the dwarves, the Ents or the Elves are vanishing from earth. Everything is pointing towards the end of a greater age. Even the biggest battle in the whole series is shown in the first 5 minutes - it's the battle at the Dagorlad long time ago in the intro. Next to that, knowledge about the past is vanishing, too. Barely no one is remembering about the glory days anymore. I think that adds much more meaning to it.

The seeing-stones (palantir) were made by the greatest of Elvish craftsmen in the earliest days of Middle-Earth. The Elves gifted them to the tribes of Men that helped them in their centuries-long war against Morgoth (Sauron's boss). The palantir could be used to see things far away, but they were primarily used to communicate with the other palantir over great distances. The High King Elendil (Isildur's father, who is killed by Sauron in the prologue) placed seven Palantir in various places across his realm, but they were all believed to be long-lost by the time of the movies. So yeah, I'm just gonna give some background blurb, sorry. I grew up in New Zealand and Tolkien WAS my childhood. I got "The Hobbit" from a school book club when I was 10, and and by 11 I saved up and bought a one volume paperback edition of LOTR, which was my constant companion until I left New Zealand in my late twenties. I was a proud geek, before that had any social acceptance. As a pre- teen I got involved with table top RPGs, starting with Dungeons and Dragons, which owed a huge debt to LOTR - as do pretty much every other work of modern fantasy. Tolkien pretty much invented that genre. Tolkien was a philologist and academic. His hobby was inventing languages. Due to the huge number of cultural and historical influences on them, he had to come up with a whole alternative history to support them. One story from that history became LOTR, which expanded on events in his straightforward childrens book The Hobbit. As I became a teen, I sort of developed into a movie buff and I became a fan of Peter Jackson when I saw his late 80's/ early 90's zero budget horror comedies. My favourite story about the making of "Bad Taste" is that at one point he needed all of the crew to appear in front of the camera, so got a bunch of passing schoolkids to operate the camera. His movie "Heavenly Creatures" (which is set in my hometown and about true events) had a bit more money behind it. It was beautiful and imaginative (and also Kate Winslet's first movie.) It was clear to me that Jackson had a distinct visual style and talent to burn. When I first heard he would be making movies of the LOTR with an epic Hollywood budget, I danced a jig. Literally.

Around 13:18 , Gandalf before the fireplace mumbles "Riddles in the dark". Reactors never know to show that but it's an important line ... 11 years later when "The Hobbit" was released the movie-watcher finally got that reference, if they manage to remember it. A long-awaited payoff.

@@Ssjdragon given the difficulty of bringing LOTR to the silver screen, I feel like Jackson did a good job overall. There are a few things that I feel could have been done differently or better. I also feel like the opening sequence could have been handled a little differently. Isildur cutting the ring off was just the final straw that caused a separation of Sauron’s spirit from his physical body.

Minor thing, but at 29:00 it's not "immortal blade", it's "Morgul blade" -- Morgul in one of the Middle Earth languages Tolkien created means "dark sorcery", and it's a word used elsewhere in these movies. These movies are full of such words by Tolkien (who after all was a linguist who invented multiple languages). I really suggest you use subtitles for these movies to get a sense of the Tolkien language, both his English style and fictional languages.

This is what I will say about the extended editions. They are for fans. They are for those who have seen the films and lived them. First time viewing should always be the theatrical. Peter Jackson said they are his version and that's why the extended editions are not called director cuts. Once you are a fan of the films the extended adds scene that flesh out the world and side stories and while are fun they do extended the films by 40 minutes making it a more challenging watching experience. I recommend watching the theatrical through for a better first time experience. Sometimes "die hard" fans of the films overlook what's better for someone who has never seen the films because they love them so much.

Does a first timer plan to watch the movies through 2 times? No they watch it once and then decide. You might as well give them the full experience while you have the chance. If you’re setting aside 4hrs anyways, what is another 40minutes? Fellowship doesn’t need the extended as much though so you can skip that. But I get what ur sayin.
