Osiyo, my sister and all readers. I rarely comment but this message I leave matters. Raised in the very old ways by Elders born well over 100 years ago, it saddens me that for so many of us, our old creation story has been lost. Owl and Panther were, for thousands of generations, the most highly honored of animal species. Our old creation story tells that Creator asked all new life to stay awake for the full 7 days and nights of creation. Of those we call animals (we are mammals) only Owl and Panther kept their word and stayed awake, in support of Creator. They saw the creation of humans. Panther was Protector, with a loud scream so when others came near, our ancestors would be ready. Owl was Messenger between those called Beloved Leaders, Holy people, and Creator. They would go to a quiet place to sing prayers in challenging times and Owl would be sent to carry their messages to Creator and come back with the answers. After the Trail of Tears, many of our Cherokee ancestors (one side of my family) were imprisoned next to tribes of different beliefs and thus, for many, our old beliefs were influenced by the beliefs of some who had previously warred with us, and held other beliefs. Much was lost or altered. Owl cannot change into human. Shifters are vastly different. Many holy people were Bird Clan and only their Beloved Women could honor others with feathers. Owl was the Messenger between Creator and Cherokee, and a big reason Bird Clan was so named, honored and called messengers. Owl is a essential being in our history, not a bringer of death but of wisdom. Cherokee raised in very old ways (like me, and maybe also raised by Wisdom Carriers) know this story well and still children carry Owl names, especially in Bird Clan. I can't find our creation story anymore on the still Oklahoma based prison ground, now the base of the Cherokee Nation, the website, and cherokee.org. It was once there, fuller and accurate, then less full, now gone. Things do change. It hurts to see again and again how much has been lost by the removal and imprisonment. Also in honoring certain other beings, animals, trees and plants once also considered sacred for their gifts. It is an honor to be alive here still, to be Cherokee, to be Bird Clan, and to have been raised so lovingly by such fine beings and nature. I love and honor the old ways. Fortunately, the Maternal side of my family escaped before the removal and lived long and wisely, so I could too. I love and respect my people whole-heartedly. Forever Cherokee! Hi Ya! Wado.

They became apostates (Christians) by the Spanish conquistadors. Native American tribes have known monotheism. And know God. If asked who is your Lord??...
