Cherokee Studios is a recording facility in Hollywood, California, founded in 1972. Cherokee's owner and manager is Bruce Robb. In his autobiography, Beatles producer George Martin dubbed Cherokee Studios the best studio in America.
In the early seventies, the Robb Brothers founded the original Cherokee Studios, first located in the countryside at a ranch in Chatsworth, and then on Fairfax Avenue in Hollywood. The noted studio was owned and operated by the award-winning producer/engineers and brothers - Dee, Joe and Bruce Robb, who had started their careers as performers in the 1960s as a Midwest-based folk rock band called The Robbs. Their manager was Con Merten. They switched to record production, and by the mid-seventies, with albums such as Pretzel Logic and Station to Station the studio had made its name.
At one point, Cherokee housed five studios at the Fairfax location and an additional three studios at a satellite location acquired on Beverly Drive (formerly Lion Share/ABC Dunhill Records).
Notable Clients
Tom Petty
Petty recorded his third album Damn the Torpedoes and fourth Hard Promises at both Sound City Studios and Cherokee Studios respectively. During the recording of Hard Promises, John Lennon was scheduled to be in the recording studio at the same time as Petty and the Heartbreakers. However, the meeting never occurred due to the untimely murder of Lennon in New York in December 1980. Both Damn the Torpedoes and Hard Promises were mixed at Cherokee Studios.
David Bowie
With Cameron Crowe documenting the recording sessions for Rolling Stone, producer Harry Maslin and David Bowie came to Cherokee Studios in 1975 to record the platinum album Station to Station.
Mötley Crüe
Mötley Crüe recorded the platinum selling albums Theatre of Pain and Shout at the Devil at Cherokee Studios. Technicians working on Shout at the Devil noted that the members of Mötley Crüe would "stay up for three days straight making music and not even think we were working hard, with girls were streaming in and out of the studio."
Frank Sinatra
Frank Sinatra recorded the Sinatra Christmas Album at Cherokee in 1975.

We recorded our basic tracks at the old Cherokee studio for our album in 1985. We recorded all night. Rate was cheaper I believe and we had a small budget. Had a great time! I love The Village too. Also recorded at Enterprise, Entourage, 606 and Studio Ultimo. All before I knew anything about engineering beyond my own 4 track cassette. I did get my hands on some consoles because we needed help during mixdowns because we did not have automation. Forgot to mention, Jingletown up in Oakland and EMI on Sunset. Fun time at all these places. I forgot, IRS Records had a studio and we recorded a bunch of songs there. It was a pre-fab control room and the studio was a large treated room. Lots of home/project studios as well. I loved The Village. I remember taking breaks and playing ping pong upstairs with our producer.

I'm so happy to see the tours return. I enjoy seeing how the pros work and the equipment they have chosen through their years of experience. I can only try software emulations, but I still enjoy that aspect.

Former employee here at 751 Fairfax in 2001-2002- that trident room was incredible- intimate sound in there- the SSL room (4096? G-series) had a machine room almost as big as the control room- Toby Wright brought in HUGE protools racks- if I recall, 78 channels of I/P with all of that sweet sweet vintage gear coloring the tone all they way to the 2" Studers. What an amazing place that was. Dee, Rob, and Joe were absolute legends and I thank my Hollywood Stars that I was privileged enough to even step onto the premises of that hallowed ground. Oh yeah- and they even had a custom plate reverb on the roof. All in all that API room was legendary and was responsible for a good bit of the LA Drum Sound DNA composition. That trident room (can't remember the numbers/letters anymore lol), however was where I honed my punch skills- easy signal flow and there were always Nuemanns available to capture its essence (well we didn't use them so much for room sound, but there was tone from the room even with that thing an inch from the vocalist) The Brothers Rob- if you're reading this- you guys provided me with amazing stories for the rest of my life- THANK YOU

I was a staff assistant at Cherokee on Fairfax. Bruce was so wonderful to me after Daddy Dave promoted me off building maintenance. Got to work with so many childhood idols and have carried the Cherokee philosophy with me ever since. All of my students have benefitted from my time at Cherokee. I wonder if that M49 is the one that Rod Stewart was swinging by its cord that after I took it away from him, the band ganged up on me with mic stands and music stands to lock me in the mic locker in Studio 1 after which they trashed the studio. Next morning Daddy Dave explained to me how to handle that situation more professionally. But that’s a story for another time.

You really seem to make all the masters open up Warren. It's almost like they want to pass on the tips to someone who is genuinely interested before its too late. - The metal plate in front of the amp for instance. Never heard that before. Forget about buying another amp, first I'm going to try getting a tray from the oven, sticking it in front and miking that up. It's these little DIY nuggets that are so great to hear. The story about Les Paul putting in the jacks "the value just went up!" was great too.

Cherokee was one of my favorite studios to record at. I recorded three albums there. I always had a lot of fun and got a lot of great work done that sounded great wherever I took it to for overdubs. I’m looking forward to converting a lot of those 2 inch tapes to digital in the next year.

About a year ago I got to go talk to Bruce after a mutual friend recommended I reach out. We ended up talking at Cherokee for a couple of hours and I couldn’t believe all of the greats he’s recorded over the years. Wonderful guy he is!

Love your channel. Thank you for sharing your talent and knowledge. My Steve Cropper story: I’m a bassist here in Atlanta. A few years ago I was hired as part of the house band at a charity golf tournament/fundraiser thing. Steve Cropper was one of the artists we backed up. There was no run-though so the 1st time was go time. When he gets to Dock of the Bay, he’s telling the audience the story behind the song and when it’s time I, the bassist, kick the song off. I’ve played it 10k times. I get 2 bars in and he turns and looks at me on the mic and says “No, I wrote it. I’ll start this song”. I felt so small haha. I still play with a few of those guys. It’s been 10-12yrs and I still get shit every time this song comes around. I love it haha

That Studio 1 at the old Fairfax location was just such an EASY room to work in; everything just sounded great in there and on that desk. And I always loved mixing in 2, which was a bit odd but always translated incredibly well.

SO cool to see Cherokee still getting it done! :-) ...... I never saw the current location. The last time I was at the Fairfax location was, late 90s, early 2000s?. That A Range is a such a monster!. Would love to hear a side by side comparison with an old Neve(which is all about the transformers). Really great to see Mr Robb still showing so much enthusiasm and passion for the craft!. He's seen and heard it all. I'd forgotten Wired was recorded there!!....I need to go listen to it now! ;:-) .........thanks for the great tour ;:-)

Such a cool Episode, Warren. Really appreciate it - especially as an "old guy" lol.The Trident A Range is something I've always want to work on but obviously, they're unicorns. An old mentor (RIP) was a real Trident guy and had an 80B that I did get to work on but on top of that, he had 6 channels of "B-Range" all racked up and they still brought the juice. I also did get some time with Camco drums and Bruce is pretty spot on. Fantastic

BRILLIANT 😇 Loved his "Green Onions" on The B3, and "Chinese Checkers" on the red Wurlitzer ❣️ I'm guessing "Duckie" was Donald "Duck" Dunn. If that's the case, I'm surprised there aren'r LaBella Deep Talkin' Flats on that Precision Bass, because that truly is "the sound" 😎 I hung out with Booker T & The MG's at the Lone Star in New York (with Eddie Floyd) in 1991, and again with them in at the Blue Note in Tokyo in 2008. Steve Cropper has always been one of my guitar heroes; and Duck was one of the coolest people you could ever meet❣️ The mic under the snare is actually a 545SD Unidyne, which is the predecessor to the SM57; and I happen to own one. It's not only great for all the same applications as it's successor, it's one of the greatest self-defense weapons ever made, 🤪 and still in production today. The Trident Studio sound that we all love and are familiar with, was actually a Sound Techniques A-range. The Trident A-Range didn't come into existence until 1971, and still was not fully utilized in London until 1972 or 1973. that being said, The two Nilsson records Bruce referred to were actually Sound Techniques, and not Tridents, as were the first three Queen Albums, the earliest Elton John recordings, and most of David Bowie recordings up to Pinups. In actuality, Cherokee was probably better known for the Trident A-Range, than Trident was in London. As to which one sounds better, well like everything else, that's subjective, but I don't think you can go wrong with either❣️Tony Visconti said at a Q & A I (unintentionally) conducted that the Trident was the warmest board he ever heard, that's why he had one built for his home studio in London. Ask Bruce about "Girl, I've Got News For you". Great Cherokee Trident recording👏🏻👏🏻

Brilliant video, I started watching and couldn’t stop. If i could make a wish-i would hire a soundguy with a stereomic on a boom (in addition to your lavalier-mics). My favorite studio is Cedar Creek in Austin, Texas. It's environment, staff, and equipment make it the perfect setting to capture your art. It is also the optimal setting to bolster your creativity when you have to walk away from endless takes. It has lush ranchland, a creek which I found ancient arrowheads, even a hammock. After taking this break, you go back in, and nail that solo, or fill without any issue whatsoever. It has the Neve console that was in Graceland, and utilizes Spectral Recording as its format. Artists who've recorded there are Shawn Colvin's A Few Small Repairs, and The Dixie Chicks' Wide Open Spaces were done there to name a few. Engineer Fred Rimmert is the quintessential golden ear that captures all the magic that has made this abode of music an absolute paradise to work.

53:27 nice! not as valuable perhaps but i got one of those 50's/60's gibson scouts and it has a tremolo knob, reverb knob and a volume knob. you can EQ via guitar choice, mic choice, placement, desk.. quite a big fan of stuff that does one thing, pushes your creativity in a direction which can be good most of the time

Dunnett Classic drums now makes George Way drums which are the closest you can get to (and arguably better than) the original LA Camco drums. Same edges, same reinforcement rings, same shell construction - and sound that is EVERYTHING Camco ever was. DW - not even remotely close to what Camco drums.
