For those who don't know, the reason why the sine wave doesn't go through the filters btw is because they are simply pure tones and you cannot filter them - only attenuate them. Unlike the other wave types :).
@mrbmodules2938
@mrbmodules2938 Год назад
Actually, the GX-1 included the sine wave back in the oscillator section. It was moved to post-filter position with the CS-80 which is where we kept it because that was a good idea.
@jamescuttsmusicjcm5013

@@mrbmodules2938 I was talking about the CS-80 specifically. Even still, it hardly matters because the fact remains, you cannot filter sine waves, only attenuate them.

Some hardware people say that nowadays you can find hardware and software sounding nearly identical, comparing basic waveforms and (even) filters. But the real difference shows up in sequences and transitions. The way oscs, filters and modulators interact to each other. I'm not experienced with hardware, so I can't tell, but nonetheless, I think that It makes sense.

I think the way the filter envelope works is quite interesting. It means that the voltage never overshoots the boundaries of the cutoff range, in contrast to synths that add the envelope to the cutoff frequency by summing. I can't help wondering whether it kind of helps to make more consistent movement of the filter timbre...

Your section on "Feet" doesn't quite name the pitches correctly! Assuming a C1 as the fundamental note at 16', all the shorter feet lengths produce the harmonic series in order. So 8' gives you C2 (one octave higher), then G2, C3, E3, G3, Bb3 and finally C4 (the 2' setting, three octaves higher).

@zxbryc Год назад
Honestly, without the hardware to compare to, it's not apples to apples. All you can really determine is if there's any extreme outliers. Until any serious competition joins the fray (Cherry and Arturia don't have the same track record as u-he, GForce or Softube), I consider all existing attempts equally average. Not bad mind you, you can make them work if you put in effort, but not super close either.

I have the Arturia CS-80 both the V3 and V4. (The V4 is a beast IMHO). I've been playing with the GX all night. The GX factor does make it a little different. Not better, not worse. So far, I think it's a HAIR thinner in some areas and a little 'murkier' in the filters? The Arturia is much creamier and closer to the original sound of the CS-80. The presets are slightly better in the Arturia as well. However, the GX is great. And I can see using the two together. Definitely, a welcome addition to my collection. And for a 1/3 of the price? I wonder if we need to crank the "Q" quality to the max. The default is basic quality. But... then our poor CPU's may get beaten up and start the crackling sounds!!! I have the Elka-X and agree that it is a nice soft-synth. Cherry did a good job with "Sines" too. Not so sure on this GX-80 - mainly as I used to have a CS70M back in the day and I just don't actually hear the "CS" sound as I remember it within this softsynth (or any other CS software)..

For some reason, all of Cherry's plugins feel uninspiring and samey or 'plastic' to me. It's a feeling similar to as if they were all just Reaktor ensembles using the same stock oscillators and filters, just configured differently. Perhaps all their plugins just use the same Voltage Modular system under the hood..... You CAN get some useful sounds out of them, but so many of the presets fail to inspire me. I just flip and flip, and ultimately switch to another brand of plugins and instantly feel better.
