I've watched some of the guys that put the time in to learn & explain the actual strategies behind this game and it blew my mind even further. I've been hoping for a entertainment/explanation combo RU-vidr to take it up. If you decide to dig into it more, I'd definitely watch.

I don’t understand why the first game was a checkmate. The path couldn’t have been blocked and the kings in check couldn’t have moved, but white could have travelled into the past to either set up a piece to take the queen across the multiverse or to attempt to checkmate black before the check occurs. EDIT: I see now. There is a soft limit in the number of alternate universes. When a player creates an alternate universe, that alternate universe gets placed on the very bottom from their perspective. The soft limit comes into play in the form of an alternate universe not being "canon" if it makes the alternate universes on one side of the original timeline grow to more than one more alternate universe than on the other side, in which case the arrow representing its progress becomes white and the board does not have to be played. Example, in the first match white created its 4th alternate timeline (the one at the very top) while black had only created 2 alternate timelines so far. So the top timeline was not necessary to be played (even though they both did), though it eventually became canon when black created its 3rd alternate timeline. But for the entire rest of the game, white was in a position where any further timeline it created would have re-widened the difference to 2 (5 white timelines to 3 black timelines) and so, had white decided to create another timeline in an attempt to evade the check, black could have ignored the non-canon timeline and gone ahead with the check anyway, hence checkmate.

I worked at a production school and literally every break the students whom were almost the same age as me would be playing chess, they had little tournaments going on and stuff, it was actually pretty interesting how addicted they got to it.

i found this chess game a while ago. it blew my mind just like it did yours, though i think i managed it a bit better. you hadn't spoken about all the rules though. about that rule where if you splitt off twice in a row, that branch becomes irrelevant. ...at least i hope i remember that right. and it wouldn't have mattered anyways for your matches.

Yes, only the purple arrow timelines are "active" and require a move in the present, all the black or white timelines are optional until the opponent with less timelines branches off and makes them active.

This looks like chess mixed with ancestry trees. Which is somewhat accurate except if your family could time travel. Also v not surprised that Reto was successful at thinking in chaos

well family trees can time travel too, it's called (w)incest, royalty used that trick a lot to win family tree battles of inheritance.
