Featured is a remarkable Rapid game between a specialized version of AI Leela Chess Zero and chess grandmaster Alex Lenderman. This version of Leela, LeelaKnightOdds-dev on lichess, was trained on Nvidia's powerful graphics card, an RTX 4090. LeelaKnightOdds-dev was specifically trained from a start position without a knight. It's a thing of beauty to see just how effortlessly Leela creates an environment where its queen is more free, embarrasses more than one of the enemy pieces, and launches a tsunami of pawns towards the grandmaster's king all while making sacrifices along the way. The game finishes with an aesthetic tactical sequence leading straight to mate. And one final note, Leela's moves only took on average 1.1 seconds!

Oddly enough, no pun intended, this has to be one of the most beautiful games I've ever seen. Leela's straightforward aggression but positional precision is remarkable! First, Leela sets out to gain space and disrupt black's development. Second, many of Leela's moves were multi-purpose, and of course the exchange sacrifice to deflect black's pawn from the e-file was very beautiful. This game makes me question how much do we really know about chess when an engine can play such beautiful and dominating chess against a 2650 gm down a full knight from move one and proceed with such unusual moves. Thank you for the game Jerry! Cheers!

Leela is honestly so awe-inducing to watch, every move is elegant perfection. People say human players are more interesting to watch but there's a lot to be said for Leela's ability to pierce through the latent space of possible moves and find wins with tactics a human mind simply could not identify.

What's kind of astonishing is that despite all of the commentary, which convinced me that white had been winning or at least in a drawn position for the second half of the game, Stockfish says that black remained hovering at around -3 right up until the blunder on move 38. All things considered, Lenderman's defense was excellent.

@@anderslarsen4412I think stockfish is biased because its evaluation of leela essentially works by comparing it with the moves stockfish would have played itself. So if leela and stockfish have a different style, then stockfish would rate leelas style worse than itself (at least over the course of the next few moves). Im not a chess engine dev tho, so take it with a grain of salt.

This is like watching a Paul Morphy game from the Romantic era of chess, only with the chess knowledge and computing power of 2024😄 So basically Morphy/Tal/Nežmetdinov game on steroids. Though Morphy played against much lower rated players than him with a rook down and won many, if not all. I think the difference between this GM and Leela (Idk Leela's Fide rating if "she" even has one, but isn't her elo rating like 3700 to almost 3800?) So like 1000-1100 rated better than this guy (Well maybe his elo is higher than 2650 though, might alot more, which makes the gap difference a little bit smaller, if Leela's rating is it's Elo rating) and Morphy played with a rook down against even great players with only a couple of hundred ratings lowers, like max 500, but the toughest opponents he faced must have been like only 250-300 rating lower than Moprhy who played sometimes with a rook down against those top players not SO far behind him talent wise, as almost every other chess player was, when he played.

The first thought: I absolutely didn't like how the man played, nevermind he's a grandmaster, and I'm not. Absolutely not the best human play. Engines are impressive nowadays. Give them more power, they will calculate almost instantly, but that doesn't mean that a human can't convert an advantage of extra knight into a win with the best play.

Give it harder odds! Like missing bishop pair. Really wanna see an “odds” Leela bot 😅 That’s my favorite type of chess content because it more easily breaks down how pieces have to work together to win. Fewer pieces and being outnumbered makes it a lot easier to see how it works.

It depends a lot on the strength of the GM and the time control. In a classical time control, things would skew in favor of the grandmaster. In rapid with knight or bishop odds, strong grandmasters tend to trade blows with the engine. That is, they lose some, win some, and draw some. A top-level player, like Hikaru or Magnus, might actually still win most of their games though. Hikaru has been able to hold draws against Komodo with only pawn odds. With rook odds, the material imbalance isn't really felt until the endgame, so it might actually lead to better outcomes for the engine than knight or bishop odds. For queen odds, the grandmaster should basically win every game. Although, they could still lose every once in a while.

I dont want to critic Lenderman too much but I got the feeling he played very poorly in this game, too much in awe. If you are already a piece ahead why take on c4 and the on d3 giving lela basically 2 tempo to develop, not challenging g4 and allowing a5 scaring your Knight to c8. This is close to 1100 teretory.
@Bennerboi
@Bennerboi День назад
The engine (Stockfish 16 NNUE) says he was winning all the until the fateful blunder. Instead, after 38... d5, for example, it says more than -5. So, I think Lenderman should be commended for his great play before the unfortunate miss, which was also more than -5 if White did not execute the beautiful sacrifice :) Stockfish also gives both dxc4 and cxd3 as top 3 moves within roughly 0.2 centipawn evaluation. So, they were clearly perfectly healthy moves. I think quite the contrary is shown by them as well! He is not in awe of the machine, so he does not fear it saying "show me! I will take the pawns *and* still have the knight. I am clearly winning.". The knight from c8 also found its way out to b5 and could even have gone to d4 from there.

@TY1979KA
@TY1979KA 15 часов назад
Lenderman began the game with a clear advantage. Consequently, Stockfish or any other engine would likely assess his moves positively, unless he made a significant blunder, as he did towards the end. However, it's evident that Leela prefers dynamic positions with spatial advantages and exerts pressure through its piece maneuvers. Lenderman's play directly favored Leela's strengths, as exemplified in my move examples. Leela even sacrificed a rook, capitalizing on its momentum to further restrict Lenderman's piece play and advance its kingside pawn, creating threats. Therefore, it's irrelevant whether Lenderman consistently played one of the top three moves or held a material advantage of +3 or +5. Leela maintained constant pressure and threats. I didn't perceive any significant threats or pressure in Lenderman's play; instead, his approach seemed to be 'I have such a large lead, I'll capitalize on it later.' If you disagree with this analysis or believe that it requires further clarification, please let me know.
