I agree with another person here - bishop tops were a production failure , too weak, easily breaks. I understand Jaques originally produced two sizes 3.5 & 4.4. 4.4 is gigantic. I have the 3.5” replica not original, and plays comfortably on 2.25” squares thanks to the wide bases which is what makes Jaques sets attractive.

Your problem is NOT the ebony, its the lack of caring about quality control, in sending you pieces that have NOT been polished! We are finding this same problem in other sets from Chess Empire! This should not happen, its just cheap to NO polish put on your pieces!
the cuttings in the white bishops have 2 different angIes. One of them goes through the midst of his top. A remarkabIe production faiIure Pieces are not done accurate. Pawns in 2 different coIours, but excuse me, is that worth the money
