Thanks for the video. I also bought this set a couple of years ago. I was looking for a really elegant but also very classical, tournament suitable Staunton set and this was my choice. I do no like all those luxury Staunton sets with exagerately sophisticated knights surpassing its size, "trying to steal the show" of the rest of the pieces. This set is extremely well done, the perfect balance between plain Staunton design and highest elgance without exagerating the design features. Maybe the queen could have been a little bit bigger but the powerful rook is wonderful. I don't like all those Staunton sets with small miserable looking rooks. Isn't the rook a 5p-piece?? -Hence it shoulld also look like a powerful piece, or not?. There is no other classic Staunton design with a more powerful looking rook. 9.5/10 for this best Staunton set.

Thanks for the comment! I also personally gravitate towards classical knights, I like to say English looking. But nevertheless, a lot of my friends also like those flashy "stealing the show" knights, so I guess everybody has its own taste. This is my favourite set btw, I like the wide bases and great stability that comes with it.

Excellent Staunton PIcadilly Chess pieces these are! The expanded size is ideal for tournament and serious play; The pieces are true works of art with so many fine details. The bishops are of a French style easily identifiable as a bishop but really more aesthetically impressive than the prevailing Anglic shape. The Knights have along with fine facial and bristling mane detail, a toothy roar that brings the chessboard alive with an aura of warfare.

I have a question. But first, thanks for this review - very nice! On their site, these pieces look yellowish, which itself is a bit „special“. But in your video, they come across as carrot orange. Is this their real appearance or a video artefact? Thanks!
@RandomChessTalk

Thanks for the question. It is between yellow and orange, but more orange.

Enjoying your channel with the music. I see Royal recommends a board for this set, but the boatd is black and white. Can you please recommend some other boards?

Great channel, love the calm music and deep relaxing accented voice you have with a passion for beautiful things. If you got chance to review an Isle of Lewis chess set from either the National Museum of Scotland or the British museum it would be interesting. They are both taken from laser scans of the originals but two different manufacturers I believe. My understanding is that the Scottish set concentrates on their 11 original pieces and the British museum on their 82 original pieces, as the find was split up. Therefore they are quite different. It is often debated whether the set should be in ivory with opposing red pieces or brown.

Thanks for the comment! If I get a chance I will review it of course. Even though I'm primarily drawn to classic chess design, I appreciate everything related to chess pieces, so I wouldn't have anything against owning the legendary Isle of Lewis :)

The Knights are amazing yet I don’t like the red stamp on top of the knight’s head.
@RandomChessTalk

Thanks for the comment! I actually do like those stamps, they give me a vibe of the old times when those red stamps were necessary to write down the moves since electronic boards did not exist.

at 26:50 you can really tell the natrual grain of the ebony pieces but everywhere else in the video you dont see that. Is that just the lightning?

A very nice set. And If you are going to by a wood sets. You must buy ebony! I love that wood. I would buy that set, but it was only made in antique box wood and ebony. I very much dislike the fake look of the antique box wood. I have been buying ebony sets since the 1980's. And the Natural Boxwood ages so NICE! That is the look you want!
@RandomChessTalk
@RandomChessTalk Год назад
Thanks for the comment! Some people also find this antique look too intense, but it is not available with natural boxwood. So I picked this one over red and white color combination.

Thanks for the comment. Hehe yes it is very nice, but maybe we should start living in a way we are not so afraid for precious items like this. Funny how our best games are with the plastic sets we care the least. It is like a crystal glass we never dare to drink from and one day we die without ever using it. Maybe we can learn to live fully with items like this :D

It still looks different from the original Jaques in many ways but it is after all a copy and I think the manufacturer copied this from internet photos rather than the real set. Also from my experience their sets have imperfections.
@RandomChessTalk
@RandomChessTalk Год назад
Thanks for the comment. Take a look at this picture, the first knight is historical from what they made their replica, i believe they made a good job. Yes it is different than original Jaques, i believe this one was created even little bit before in time britishchesssets.com/chess/BCS_Ns1.jpg
@kevinwellwrought2024
@kevinwellwrought2024 Год назад
@@RandomChessTalk Yes, it looks very fake but also to make a good copy of the original Jaques is almost impossible as Indian woodturners do not possess the technique and skill of original Jaques woodturners such as Richard Whitty etc.
@RandomChessTalk
@RandomChessTalk Год назад
@@kevinwellwrought2024 well this is not meant to be Jaques design, like 1849, this is pre Jaques design and there is historical knight like this. I imagine people are mostly attracted to well known Jaques knight, but this is something different but not fake in my opinion. Yes it is not made in UK so we can't get that part of the story with this set, you don't get that green paper certificate let's say, but overall it is pretty remarkable and I believe the only replica for that specific ivory design.
@kevinwellwrought2024
@kevinwellwrought2024 Год назад
@@RandomChessTalk I know this is pre-Jaques as I have dozens of Jaques sets. The proportion and aesthetic aspect of original Jaques are far superior to the indian-made replicas specially the one on here. The copied set on here looks fake in the sense that it looks too much of a copy. Of course, I am aware that the craftmanship of Jaques artisans is impossible to copy. Chessbazaar also makes replicas and although theirs are superior in quality to Royal Chess Mall and better price, they are nevertheless no match to the original sets.
@RandomChessTalk
@RandomChessTalk Год назад
@@kevinwellwrought2024 thanks for your opinion. Can I ask you what do you think about Staunton Castle 1849/1850s replicas?
@-johnny-deep-

Beautiful set! But why do they have to ruin the bishop by having the mitre slot cut into the filial ball on the top! Also, the cut is just too wide for the size of the top. I think that looks awful. I know it's a faithful reproduction of an original set design, but it looks just as bad there
@RandomChessTalk
@RandomChessTalk Год назад
Thanks for the comment! Some time ago, I also had some sort of concern about all the bishops which are made in this way. I thought they were fragile and very delicate, and I gravitated towards more sturdy bishops. But after getting it, I have changed my mind about this. Their delicate design is full of finesse, they are more likely to get damage but because of that I care about them more. I realized this is not a working horse set but rather for playing slower games with people who like admire the pieces as much as they admire the game itself :)

@RandomChessTalk Год назад
Thanks for the comment! This set is for sure huge. But I really like it this way, size is the part of its value, weights a lot, and it is a pure you to handle them. I try not to play blitz game with this one, but rather longer games. For savage blitz games where pieces fly and knock hard on each other, I use less expensive sets.

You NEED to STOP comparing sets that are NOT AT ALL--comparable!! You have done this on other videos! This is like comparing apples to oranges, as they would say! Everything is so different about them! The REAL TEST is to find a different seller of the same or comparable set -- then, compare ALL the qualities- size, weight, craftsmanship, quality of wood( are there imperfections in color AND marks that should NOT be on the wood)! Then there is is difference in the DETAILS of the cuts( part of craftsmanship!)! Compare EACH PIECE --WEIGHT ( just one of the different pieces)-- this is a VERY telling part of craftsmanship-- is TOO MUCH of the weight in the King and QUEEN, LEAVING the other pieces TOO FAR out of balance with the set as a WHOLE!!
