It's stupid to make a ruling based on punishing the players for not lying and pretending like they had no choice but to play the exact sequence of moves that end in a draw.

There are ways to prove the definitive theoretic value of a game, but this is too expensive to do for chess. It has been done for other games though, such as othello and checkers ( both draws ).

I think this was in the world blitz championship. Magnus won with 16/21 points, and the person playing with white was second in 15.5/21 points, meaning he could have at least played for a draw or a win to beat Magnus (he also had a better tiebreak than Magnus.).

@@simba3610 to be frank I dislike any “forced” draws and it is a bit weird that this one in particular got punished. If the players are able to agree to an outcome before hand it really doesn’t matter what they play. My point was that predetermining outcomes before games should be punished and the moves don’t matter.

@@thomaswalsh4224 there's no indication anywhere that the results were predetermined. The whole point of the ruling was that the arbiter didn't like that gms were establishing the precedent that players could goof off in tournaments.

They forced a repetition draw for fun and the official watching them thought they had pre-arranged it (draws give half point when loss gives 0 so it messes with rankings and ladders). They obviously didn't pre-plan this, and the planning is what they got the forfeit for. Every single fan in the world can point to a dozen things Magnus has done this year alone that actually brings chess into "disrepute." Magnus has done this exact thing and it was okay.
