Chess Opening: Grob Attack

The Grob Attack has a reputation for not being the strongest opening. That's partly because it's not very good BUT that doesn't mean there aren't some fun variations and creative traps that many players will fall for. For more chess openings check out www.thechessweb...

Thanks Kevin. I've played this once. The expression on the guy's face was priceless. There's more to chess than just winning games.

It's fun to play really weird irregular openings. It has a psychological effect on human opponents and throws engines out of book. Like the Bongcloud, Paris (drunken knight), Durkin (sodium attack), Fried Fox, Hammerschlag, Transvestite attack (swap king and queen as soon as possible as white, then develop normally).
@Amoeba_Podre
@Amoeba_Podre 3 года назад
Lmao transvestite attack, I had never heard of this one
@richarddelaney4803

I agree - unsound vs a computer, but the psychological effect of irregularity against an unprepared human can sometimes go a long way!

You're wrong about engines tho. Engine perfectly knows the grob attack and even marks the g4 move as a theoretical move.

So, although this is very clearly not the strongest opening, and although I personally don't really like it, there are definitely ideas here that you can take and learn from. For one, this video shows you how not to fall for the Grob attack. It also teaches a unique queen trap idea and although it's unlikely that specific line is to occur in a real game, there are definitely ways to do something similar, such as, manipulating an aggressive queen to getting forked.

I've been playing this opening for some time online and I'm surprised how many players fall for the traps, and even if they don't they use much more time in the begining than they would with other opening so when you play blitz 3' or 5' it's a great opening, also in online tournaments people seem to not know it and as you said Kevin it's fun to play.
@jefrybuiza3648

This Opening strategy is like a "double edge Sword", if you are lack of knowledge on how to use it, you will just end up losing the game. especially if your opponent also know this strategy. This is like a "counter attack" on both players.
@georgecolby7488
@georgecolby7488 5 лет назад
The grob attack reveals quickly how good of a fundamental player your opponent is. If you're in for a three game round or more, this can really show you how studied-up your opponent is. Hell, you might even be able to steal a game. Also, if i remember correctly, there are few options to force a draw if it begins to go badly.
@xeogillis3666
@xeogillis3666 4 года назад
In minute 6.41 you explain to play knight to C3, I woud rather take the pawn with my bishop, wait what black does and then bishop to F7 check, opponent has to move the king and then depending on the opponents move queen to E3 or queen to D5. I could also retreat the bishop but at least the opponent isn't able to castle. The center of the opponent has no pawns left and without the abbility to castle the opponent is completly lost.

I discovered this opening over 20 years ago thanks to a book by Michael Basman (his commentary is hilarious), and I'm amazed at the success I continue to have with this opening. People lose their minds when playing black against it, in my experience, and a lively, topsy-turvy game with all kinds of creative chances usually ensues. It's not the most "sound" opening, but it's great for blitz chess and fun to play!

This opening while probably not the soundest of openings does have a lot of traps for someone not accustomed to playing against it since there are so many ways one could go wrong when defending against it. However if your opponent has played against it or has even played it themselves then the person playing it as white is in trouble.

U get either a Mikhail Tal victory or a lost game, slowly but surely you do learn tactical aims worth going for. Remember "tactics flow from a superior position". So you end up with "luck". But it stems from a superior position. And you made your own luck by sacrificing material for (insane) development.
