Chess Openings: Fried Liver Attack

The fried liver attack is a super aggressive opening that derives from the two knights defense in the italian game. White looks to sacrifice his knight on f7 so that he can take initiative and start a great assault against the black king. Black has to be on his toes and has to play very careful or else he will find himself checkmated very fast.

This was very instructive for me, because if I start with e4, I usually proceed to a Ruy Lopez or Italian Game. If I play an Italian Game, I always try to give the Fried Liver Attack a shot. After watching this lecture again, to remind me of some key moves, I crushed a higher ranked oppenent with a savage Fried Liver Attack, until he resigned at move 17.

People have to understand this attack only works if black responds exactly like they show in this video.... which actually happens quite often in 1200-1500 games. Anything else turns the game into a piano/Evans gambit or black just gives white control of the center which is also pretty good. It's a good opening nontheless.

A cool trap I found out about 8:50 instead of moving the pawn forward, move the rook to e1. The best moves for black are bishop or queen to d7. From there take e5 with your rook. If the king decides to take your rook it is checkmate anywhere between 5-9 moves or something like that

After Whites fifth move 5:exd5 Nxd5 is a blunder.Black can play instead Na5 or Nd4 or b5 as can be found in many opening books in which case Black has the attack not white. Although theory holds the position equal after all three of these move white, not black, is on the defensive. It is a disservice to young players not to show these possibilities and will cause their quick defeat.

What if they play pawn to h6? It’s so frustrating because it seems like every player 950+ picks up on this right away and plays that, and then I have to freestyle with something else.
@azaaneyaad5961

Paul Bean I’m talking about 1:21. What the hell am I supposed to do if the play their black pawn to h6? Then I can’t play my knight to g5 anymore? It ruins the whole attack. And what I said in my original comment is that any player above 950 will almost always play that and ruin my attack, so this sucks.

True, but if you are a beginner and play white and you play against an experieced player, this might be one of your best chances. Because your opponent is forced to react quite early on in the game and cannot really develop his plan. And be not afraid to sacrifice a few figures

I mean, it's all very beautiful, but you're showing a line that starts with a blunder and you don't mention it. It's well known that taking with the knight on d5 is a bad move. And it's well known as well that if black plays knight to a5 it's a completly fine position

did anyone see his mistake after opponent: bishop goes to d5 ?? It is 9: 35. Can't the knight take the queen because that would only result in a knight loss vs. queen loss, where the queen is so crucial in checking the king???

In his "The Middle Game in Chess, Reuben Fine (considered one of the greatest players never to become World Champion in the 1930's ) demonstrates that moving the c6 Knight to b4 on move 8 for black, & leaving him there until he retakes white's light -squared bishop on c4 during a combination @ move 12 ....leads to a stronger position for black w/ black "castling by hand" queen's side !

Then you are simply up a tempo in the Italian game. 3...h6 is too passive a move for black in the opening. The fried liver attack is a variant of the two knights defense. 3...h6 is not the two knights.

I definitely have a question about the b2 pawn to b4 move when the opponent brings his dark space bishop out instead of the second knight. What keeps his bishop on c5 from taking my pawn at b4?

The thing that I really like about the Fried Liver attack is just how savage it is against players rated less than 2000 ELO. It really does an amazing job throwing players in that ELO range off of their game. When you take the pawn with the knight, you're sacrificing the knight and giving the other player an immediate two pawn advantage. HOWEVER -- with that sacrifice, you immediately and permanently destroy black's ability to ever castle in the game. Also, once black losses the ability to castle, their tempo is also thrown off and they must now play reactively instead of being proactive. The Fried Liver Attack puts black on the defensive and exposes the king in such a way that white can continue to develop pieces to force black's king to further dance around the board. This line of play sacrifices a knight for: - Loss of black tempo - Loss of black's ability to castle - Loss of black's ability to plan an offensive strategy - Loss of black's ability to more easily develop pieces without having to constantly respond to attacks Sure, you lose a knight during this attack -- but as you see above, you also gain a lot of different positives!
