Hmmm. One issue I have with this opening is that castling is largely out of the question, since you have to weaken your pawn structure in order to fianchetto your bishops.
@TheChessGiant
@TheChessGiant 2 года назад
Great point! Yes, whenever going with a fianchetto, we do have to be careful - but when played right we will be completely okay.

Who needs to castle? Our King is like Jonah, completely safe and sound deep inside the belly of whale, only this time is an Hippo instead

Glad to hear it! And same here! I have got a ton of points in bullet off of this - a little bit scarier with longer time controls (chess tournaments) but bullet or 3 + 0 chess it works great!

is there a slightly different move order for the hippo (when playing as black), depending on whether white plays e4 or d4 first? thank you !
@TheChessGiant
@TheChessGiant 3 года назад
Hey John! Great question. I would say against e4 or d4 I would personally go with g6, Bg7, d6, a6, and then continue from there how you'd like... maybe with Nd7 and e6 and Ne7 and b6 and Bb7? Those last 5 moves in terms of the order don't matter a ton usually but that's what I would go with. Maybe through castling somewhere in there too. After that, or even during, h6 and a6 are always good options to slow down white's attacking chances.

Solomon have you done a series on some of the 'partial hippos' . As you know sometimes you can not get the full set up and that's when you keep most of the set up ,as I am sure you know,but have to change some of it because of whites moves. If you have not already can you possibly do a series on such common moves/ lines that require this??? Thanks

Hoping you get notices as I have no idea how old this game post is. That said, I have struggled to find a transcription of Gendry Chapukais 1996 game. You do not provide much information and you do not provide a transcription of the game which would be greatly helpful. Trying to follow the moves and using CC it is difficult to make my own transcription to use later for study, meditation, contemplation and etc. I, and certainly many other followers and subscribers would greatly appreciate that effort.

curious if ths opening for black works against D4 Queens Pawn opening as well as E4? does it matter since the eventual set-up seems the same?

Great question Mitch! Ya this exact question is why the Hippo is one of my favorite openings! It works against really anything! No matter what white does... e4, d4, c4, f4, Nf3, etc.... we can still achieve our setup and the opponent can't really do anything about it! Super easy to learn and fun no matter what the opponent plays

@@TheChessGiant sorry it was brain fart moment on my part, got some mental issue lately distinguishing black and white(puzzle solving ptsd, or whatever) But finaly , seems I found an opening for me (maybe) so thanks for it, lol, testing it getting feel then will test it against my level(noobs 150) in blitz 3+0, I feel hopeful this time to rip them apart this time. Hedgehog didn't work for me that well, too complex(too sensitive to sequence of moves) PS As usual there are nuances, but getting hang to it, but it nice it works for white as well now I have 2 openings 2 defences for price of 3

Hikaru just did a Hippo Speed run. Then I found your cool video, thanks for helping explain it. Could it be considered part of the Modern Opening G6?
@TheChessGiant
@TheChessGiant 3 года назад
Oh nice I didn't know that. He might be the best Hippo player I've ever seen. And yes it can be considered a possible variation/setup of the Modern Opening. We actually made a video simply explaining the opening theory of the Hippo. I'll drop a link just in case you want to check it out. Let me know if there's any other questions you have about it! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-amKYfoMZSLw.html
