The Hippopotamus Defense is a top tier chess opening which can help you improve at chess and beat higher rated players. The opponent can prepare as much opening theory as they'd like, but by playing the Hippopotamus Defense you bring about a whole new chess game. The Hippopotamus Defense uses good chess opening strategy, chess opening theory, chess opening ideas, chess opening principle, and chess opening moves. Many consider the Hippopotamus Defense to be a passive opening, but this video shows that this is far from the case! The Hippopotamus Defense is an aggressive opening which has chess opening tricks and traps that can help you win games fast. We hope you enjoy this RU-vid chess video on the Hippopotamus Defense!

I don't typically watch many RU-vid videos of chess being explained, but... my dude, you knocked this out of the park. Hands down -- the voice, the pacing, the layered content. I loved literally everything about this video.

I just noticed the details in the thumbnail, the charging hippo tossing up the chessboard and scattering the pieces. I love it!

The hippo strikes again. The hippo may seem like a slow, passive opening, but appearances can be deceiving. The hippo can become aggressive very quickly as this game demonstrates.

Yessir! Ya many see it as too passive, but really we simply aren't looking to win the game in 10 moves. After this though, are pieces are ready to activate and put a ton of pressure on the opponent's king.

I had to laugh at your opening remarks. I used to work with a guy from South Africa who told me about a time he went on a safari in Africa once and literally had a Hippopotamus running at him and the guide he was with at 30 mph!! He said the Guide just jumped in the Hippo's path and waved his arms in the air and shouted "STOP" and the Hippo literally stopped in its tracks and turned around and went away. He said he asked the Guide how he knew that would cause the Hippo to stop? The guide said he didn't. That was the only thing he could think to do. 😀

Woah. That's intense! Crazy how they can run so fast with all that body weight! If I ever see a Hippo, I'm not going to go pet it. That's for sure.

can you do a video in the future regarding how to handle 3+ pawn center while playing the hippo(A.K.A for example playing with black vs d4,e4 and f4 or c4, d4 and e4 or even all for of those pawns)
@TheChessGiant

Hey Harel, great idea! I will get this going.

This is the perfect example of why it's possible to get another title with the hippo! High rated players don't take it seriously and they regret it!

I know a guy who always play the Czech Defense and he'll transpose to the Old Indian if needed. He has 20+ years of experience so playing into his prep is not a good idea. Do you have any good lines to play against him? It can be dubious but don't be too losing
@quentincastroniemann7530
@quentincastroniemann7530 2 года назад
Tbh isn't this whole opening close to being losing? I don't think you should invent something here. I don't know which move order he plays, but if you just play in appropriate order d4 ,c4 ,e4 ,Nc3 ,Nf3, Be2, O-O, Qc2, Rd1, Rb1 followed by b4, a4 and probably even h3 and Be3, then I don't see any problems. Your pieces will be much more active and then complications should always favor you.

@@quentincastroniemann7530 The guy I'm talking about has beaten many 2300+'s in the online chess group I'm in. It will be easy in rapid or classical but this guy mainly plays bullet and sometimes blitz. He's very good with this opening, it can be so deadly for anyone if played incorrectly for just a few moves
@quentincastroniemann7530
@quentincastroniemann7530 2 года назад
@@giakhangdeptraivocungtan I see. The same goes for all modern/pirc Setups. Objectively they are not super great, but you can't really prove that in a blitz or bullet game, because it's very tricky and one can easily underestimate counterplay and then lose. That's also why players like Nakamura or Carlsen are playing these dubious openings. You just can't refute them with no time... However I always try to play the best moves as White, disregarding the time control. I think this makes you a better player overall. And the more often you play it the more you will avoid those tactics and eventually get some flawless wins.

Of course! Drop a link to your game(s) in the comment section or email it to me at "thechessgiant@gmail.com" - thanks! ALSO, if you do post a game in the comments just make sure the RU-vid algorithm doesn't shut it down. Idk some links go through and others don't for some reason.
