I’m 37 and was just diagnosed with costochondritis! Thank you so much for this video.

This is the video for me. I've been suffering from this for years now. I've also been to the ER multiple times and although my last cardiologist appointment was last years (next in June) my heart never was the problem. Actually my general practitioner (who's also educated in chiropractic) was the one pointing out that these more likely than not are issues with multiple of my intercostal joints. These can not only cause a tight feeling in the chest but also cause pain when breathing in. And unfortunately there's little chiropractors or physical therapist can do about it (as Brad told, he first had to do some investigating to find something to help with this issue). Unfortunately I also had heart issues in the past - though these were hypertension and from that left heart hypertrophy and for both of them I don't need treatment anymore for the past several years; things are normalized again even without having to take medication for the past few years. But still, it's always in the back of my head that this pain could also be signs for very serious heart issues. And to make bad things worse, I'm suffering from anxiety and panic attacks at times (out of the blue, likely triggered by subconscious physical impulses due to other health chronic health issues) which can sometimes also make the chest feel tight - and those also can be an indicator for serious heard problems (I'm glad you pointed those out as well for everyone not aware). So there's multiple reasons why I could have the pain and unfortunately quite often the anxiety/panic gets triggered by the pain caused by the intercostal joint problems. It's a bad situation but at least I'm aware, which helps at least half the times to stay calm. With 75€ for the backpod it sadly is not within my budget though and softballs aren't commonly available over here, so a tennis ball will have to do. It rarely has helped in the past but when being in the situation everything that could help is better than doing nothing. Because Brad is absolutely right: It indeed is a real nasty experience when you have chest pain and you're wondering if it's a heart attack or not.

What helped me was a tennis ball and a cheap massage gun from Sierra Trading store instead of the expensive Backpod that I just could not use. It did not help at all. Just a waste of time and money for me! A massage gun is probably 10000 more effective than a Backpod. I am cured of Costochondritis, zero pain. I could not even sneeze or cough without having excruciating pain. It did take me some months for sure to figure things out. There are other videos here on RU-vid that helped me better understand this condition. Once I introduced the tennis ball, massage gun, Vitamin D 10000 IU daily I started to see a fast improvement. Good luck!

What are you massaging how with that massage gun? I can't imagine for you to reach far enough behind yourself too massage certain spots close to the spine with it, can you?

I think I have this exact problem. I have a tiny spot on the right front of my chest that is about dime sized, like you said. The area around it is fine, but on that tiny spot, it's intensely painful. I found that about where my rib would meet the spine is another tight/tender spot. I used a tennis ball like you used that back massager and, after one time, it doesn't hurt to breath in anymore. I'll keep doing it to see if that is it. Thank you for the help!

I feel pressure in my chest, it is not pain at all but is more like oppresive, like if something really heavy was put in my chest. The doctor ruled out heart problems, what could it be and could it be cured with this?

I was in a car accident 11 years ago, and had mostly seatbelt injuries in the form of small tears in my rib joint cartilage. It never fully went away, but just finished a gigantic project (I’m a carpenter), and I am fully flared up right now. Been going to my chiropractor and he told me it is costochondritis. Just ordered a Back Pod.

I had costochondritis from over doing it in the gym. It took a long time to get a proper diagnosis. I thought for a couple of months I had a heart problem. Sure was relieved when I found out it was not.

Brad.......I have had costochondritis for years off and on. I think it was inflammation from all the bench pressing when I was younger. I have also experienced Tietze syndrome, which is related and primarily effects the cartilage that attaches to the sternum. This can cause the feeling of a lump where that cartilage is inflamed. Anyways, the interesting thing about costochondritis is that planking can cause it, or inflame it. I had not been bothered by it in years and decided that I needed to hit my core better and started doing planks 5 times a day. Wow...talk about feeling like a heart attack. Turns out, even some cardiologists are aware of the connection between planks and costochondritis. Interesting therapy for it.

Could I use 2 pvc tubes (maybe 2-inch ones) to put on each side of my back? We don’t have these products in my country and even if they shipped internationally, our currency is greatly devalued, it’d be very expensive. Thank you for any advice on how to circunvent this issue. 🙏💕

Man this happened to me 3 days ago. The pain was in the middle and upper chest almost equally - tho more left side. Had same cardiac fears. The pain was extreme. Taking deep breaths exacerbated the sharpest pains. What a timely video. Can I use a tennis ball? Thank you.

Me too. Pain just to left of center, amplified with deep breaths, extended toward below left shoulder. Not excruciating, but not explainable. I called the nurse at the doctor's office. She called the ambulance. Naturally, when I arrived at the hospital, the pain was almost gone. Their doc was confident it was musculoskeletal. Better safe than sorry.
