I was living in Austin and was at this taping. I wish I had the raw footage, Chet was hilarious! The outtakes would go viral! A lot of people left after an hour, but we stayed for the whole thing. Chet would stop a song and say he made a mistake and tell a funny story then continue. Still my favorite live show ever. All those crowd shots were done in the first 4 or 5 songs.
I've old tapes of his lessons? and he'd hilariously state:" all mistakes are inte tional!" Love Chet since 5/6 years old@ 69,I'm happy, & grateful others were aware too, a true humble Country gentleman! God Blessed ***
I was there also Keith, it was a tremendous show. It was probably 1am by the time they wrapped up, and wasn't very many left in the building. They did the finale about 11-11:30, so those that didn't want to stay could see the ending. I watched the show on TV, and it almost seemed like a different show.
It's crazy to hear that people started to leave after one hour. Who would leave a show with a legend such as Chet. And so many great guests. I could only have dreamed of being there.
Not sure what got me into playing the guitar, but I loved it for close to sixty years and admired what I could find of Chet. These days the pain and stumbles come close to bringing tears to my eyes, but I still try now and then. My mind still knows how, but my fingers just refuse to cooperate the way they used to.
When Chet played you got three guitar players for the price of one. There are not too many fellers that can play Bass / Rhythm and Lead all together and very few could do it like Chet. RIP Chet, we all miss you!
Always will be No.1 "CGP" and the Godfather Of the Electric Guitar. I am so privileged that I have seen him perform live and I have been a finger-picker for many years.... RIP Mr. Atkins.
To have Chet back you up during most of a solo must be one of the most humbling experiences a guitarist can ever have. I'd be so nervous I'd forget the whole damn song.
The “radio” and major labels definitely sold out years ago, but 5 years ago when you made this comment and still today in 2021 the real music is out there. We just have to stop being lazy and actually look for it.
Yes Uncle Chet was a real smooth operator indeed. More guitar players like him we truly need. Unfortunately they are almost impossibleto find. He also possess an intelligent mind and Chet was truly one of a kind.
This makes me cry like a baby. Particularly "Somebody Loves Me Now". My god what an overwhelmingly beautiful piece. It makes me think of my girlfriend and how I want to fix our broken relationship and that was before I knew the name of it. RIP Chet.
The man always seemed so relaxed, no worries in his head about the outcome, that grin of his just lets you know that he's got it handled. Nice posting here.
Indeed. He appears to be so chill that it looks more like he is sitting on poach way up in the mountains, sipping a frosty limonade and pickin on a beautiful Gretsch while watching a beautiful woman walking by. Not a care in the world.
And EJ the perfectionist muffs a note out of nerves. Respect for the master, no shred, just melody. Chet doesn't abuse the instrument, he just lets the music out.
Young Thing wow, loved it. A very beautiful tune is this Mountains Of Illinois, Pat Bergeson what magical touch on guitar to this Song Read My Licks, and it goes without saying Thank you Steve Wariner for your gorgeous voice & talent with your guitar, a line up of awesome artists, love Don McCleans' Vincent. Thank You Kolo Colovacio 4 sharing these awesome guitarist.
i love some chet and friends lord i wish i could've been in his band they're always so tight of a group no matter who he's got playing with him, top notch guys the bunch and of course he's the giant of picking and tone ... thanks for all the great songs and licks chet
I saw this show on TNN in 1994. Bought the CD later. Never have found a DVD of this show. Had it on VHS tape long ago. That tape is buried in a box of tapes I stored away 20 years ago.
I've been listen to Chet Atkins since I was 12 years old I'm 68 now and I love him more today than I did then I've even learned to play a lot of his hard songs that I never dreamed of playing my my brother bought me a left-handed Gretsch and I've never stop playing it for last 3 years now Chet is such an inspiration to everyone who loves him my dad bought a new stereo in his bedroom he bought every album Chet put out at the time when I was 12 he got me in the bedroom laying on the bed with light off listening to the delicate tones that only chet could produce and I've loved him ever since no one will ever be a Chet Atkins including me who loves him so much but I know someday when I die I learned some of his stuff that's good enough for me
What an absolutely elegantly magnificent guitar player Chet was. His touch, sensitivity and craftsmanship was so many levels above many so others. Thank you for your superb music, Chet
That Mountains of Illinois (excuse spelling) piece is so beautiful. Thumb-downers must be paper and comb devotees. This is wonderful. Thank You Mr. Chet.
He was Tommy emanuel's idol. When he finally heard him play he played a couple of chet's songs and he said he played them much better than he did. He said Tommy is the greatest guitar player the world has ever known. Tommy taught himself how to play and it was years before he even knew what a bass player was. He always played the base in his music like chet does.
Unassuming and in the full understanding that the music controls the never ending flow of ideas/techniques/interpretation and composition. Chet Atkins and Les Paul - always encouraging musical exploration to the end. Add to that list, the late and great Jeff Beck.
Chet got to see some awesome players come up. He could be like a baseball manager or something, stand there and talk about his connection to every guitarist of the period like old baseball skippers talk about experiences with players in different organizations.
let me know what you are missing..My dad had his entire collection, and my dad passed this past spring...I would love for a true Chet lover to have them..
Ya gotta love the string section on "Sails." "Read My Licks,"=three pickers having some serious fun. Always admired Eric Johnson's technical abilities but he never seemed to play with any emotion, contrast that with "Vincent," the difference is night and day.
Wonderful! For what it's worth, I've lived in Illinois for seventy-seven years, and there are no mountains! Don't be fooled by town names like Mt. Sterling or Mt. Carmel. This was on PBS years ago and I recorded it on VHS. The station is in Peoria, about 80 miles away, and we're in the Illinois bottoms. At the time we had a sixty foot antenna and could receive the PBS station fairly well. As I recall the video was pretty bad, but the audio was okay. I still wish I could hear the sound made when that line of glass, or whatever, has a drum stick passed under it.
