My favorite memory of Chet Atkins was hearing him tell a story of taking a cruise to relax. He had an acoustic guitar with him and was out on a deck chair relaxing and playing a little bit for his own enjoyment. The lady next to him said "you're pretty good with that guitar. You're no Chet Atkins mind you, but you're not bad". He just smiled and went back to his cabin.
Check out, Roy Clark and Joe Pass. I played until my fingers had blisters. I popped then put Band-Aids on them and kept playing . Can play several iInstruments. I had to. Most drink, do to many drugs. Relationship's. Don't give up. If you want to play. Keep practicing
Never knew Jerry could play like this, until I got older and realized, HEY! There's more to life than just working. You young working Men who read my comment, please take heed! Realize there's other thing's in this world besides working. Its to late for me, I'm 66 and my body is worn out from the physical labor I pushed it through. This music makes me feel so good! I'm happy. These artist are brilliant...😎😎😎
Jerry was a certified badass on guitar and everyone in Nashville and LA kew it. Chet gave him his master of the guitar award, one of very few ever given out. lookup Jerry's Breakdown with Chet
You should try GarageBand from Apple, you don't need to play an instrument. You just drag and drop pre recorded beats and the add maybe a bass line, etc...it's really not that hard. You never know😀😃
@@andrebadeaux2756as someone who’s been playing clubs etc for 50 years getting watch and listen to performance like this is a tasty treat - and Suzy Boggus is like the cherry on top! Keep ‘em coming (please?)
They were both superb guitarists. The difference? Chet was so laid back, whilst Jerry was a showman! But what a team they made! A real joy to watch them together. Oh, how I miss them!
I agree with you describing Jerry as the showman of the two, but there is that deep melancholic feel to what he does, both when clowning and playing. That's what I think that these two have in common apart from their incredible mastery of guitar playing within the same culture of southern rural and small town USA.
David Dawson yes! You are right. When you get my age, and with arthritis in your hands, then you can put on Chet/Jerry Reed and just smile... REAL BIG...👀👀👀😎😎😎😀😀😀
I hate it when you start a long video and think maybe I'll just watch a few minutes and then it is so good to hear that you end up watching the whole thing! Jerry and Chet are playing every day now without a doubt!
That’s what just happened. Suzy Bogguss’ voice doesn’t hurt the ears much either. Nanci should have written a few more custom tailored for her. Suzy’s scale precision took that Russell/Griffith colab to perfect heights
I just realised that the drummer in this Video and in this American Shop Band is a Young Harry Stinson. Harry Stinson is part of Marty Stuart’s Band “The Fabulous Superlatives”
Thanks naming Suzy Bogguss, what a talent! Grew up with Chet and never knew my Dad had given us a treasure to enjoy so long after. Just found some Suzy Bogguss on RU-vid, so check her out with that spelling. Reminded me a bit of Emmy Lou Harris, but that's an older memory too 😉
The amount of talent in that band is Ginormous!!! A very young Brent Mason & Jerry Douglas , Handsome Harry , Mark O’Connor , Pat Bergeron, & Paul Yandell not including Jerry & Chet !!!! It’s videos like these that give me a love hate relationship with my Guitars because as long as I have played these guys will run circles around me in there 70’s !! But it sure sounds amazing & is awesome to watch!!!
From players point of view, Chet somehow managed to stay current with all of the great guitarists as they came up, regardless of their respective genres. It's one of the things I respected most about him, he just loved the art regardless of who it was coming from. Jerry Reed was another great guitarist, but vastly under rated I think. I found an interview with Chet saying how horribly insecure Jerry was about his playing. He recounted a time when they were just warming up & Jerry whipped out some runs & progressions that floored Chet, when he asked Jerry to show him Jerry grew uncomfortable, started making a joke about it (his go to thing when uncomfortable) then finally said it was time for a break. LOVE seeing these two playing together, thanks sharing!!
Paul was just as good as Chet in many ways. Just think of having to read Chet Atkins mind every song, and then follow him, and support him. I have one of Paul's books. You get to see and with the CD hear Paul; solo. Amazing player. RIP to all of them. We are the blessed ones for having them in our lives.
It's so nice to see this old video of Jerry Reed and Chet. There's even a very young Jerry Douglas on Dobro. Always love Jerry Reed, and I miss him and his music. I do have CDS but nothing like seeing and hearing from him on stage, or movies.
Being a fellow musician, how hard must it have been to audition for Jerry and Chet's band ?? The caliber of talent in this group is immeasurable.. What a performance !!
and Jerry was Very in-your-face about your guitar skills. Guess he had no complaints about Chet. But he called ALL guitarists "Son", as if ready to give them a (smart assed)guitar Lesson. "There's a lota guitar-wimps out there. spoken by T.N." Much respect to both ~R I P
They both practiced alot and yes they learned from eachother. To say its a natural talent is to take away from all of the hard work and dedication they both put into the instrument and music. It isnt a gift its alot of hard work
Even if it were only for a short period, that Mark O'Connor was on this video, his name should be beside Jerry's and Chet's. Mark O'Connor is to the fiddle what Chet is to a guitar.
Chet, Jerry, Mark and Brent were all together at one time for a reason, to showcase four of the greatest musicians of all time, all appearing together at one time. Just stop for a moment and reflect upon that. Thank you almighty God in heaven for making that happen!
If you want to know what real, gifted, country guitar sounds like, THIS is who is playing when you find it. Two of the best "Certified Guitar Players", without peer. Having a full set with Suzy and that effortless band is a thing of wonder.
In an interview it was brought out that they were so different, that Chet was laid back, and Jerry was bounce off the wall. Jerry said this is true. Chet said it made a good contrast as their guitar playing was similar.
5 of the best. On acoustic up front is Paul Yandell, long time picking partner of Chet and a CGP recipient. Add youngsters (then) Brent Mason and Pat Bergeson. Phenoms is a good word for them.
I always say that the Rock guitarists in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame should be glad guys like these two went into a different genre or they would be in the Hall of Fame instead
The adoration on Jerry's face for his dear friend Chet is never more evident than when Jerry sings "All I Ever Need Is You." Still hard to believe that these two giants are no longer with us. There are lots of really good players around today, but no PAIR of them are as tightly linked as Chester and Jerry.
Do you hear anything this sophisticated out of Nashville stars nowdays ? Nope .... Therse a couple who can play some strait blues scales and some chicken picking. Now they just capo up and play the same crap over and over Nashville has gone down hill in my opion. Just a bunch of manufactured junk now they have to hire outside producers from LA, New york to make these so called " talented "artist sound like something nowdays its really pathetic . Have you heard the most recent biggest stars out of Nashville just sit and play solo without the session musicians ? ... I can out play most of them and some are absolutely terrible ! and to me have no bussiness on a big stage.
Listen to Jack Pearson. You won't find better. Also Johnny Hiland. Very different styles but first class picking. Jack and Tommy Emmanuel play together often. Tommy isn't Nashville but might be the best in the world. Chet bestowed his last CGP on Tommy before Chet passed away. They recorded an album together. The Day The Fingerpickers Took Over the World, I believe is the title. Great guitar playing is certainly not dead.
What a true treasure to find this! Thank you for posting! Wish I could get a video of this show or sound track! Two "Masters" of their trades that contributed so much to music! Blessings from above!
Maybe the best of Chet Atkins in this performance, is that he knows where to keep quiet.... I mean, he's up front most the time, I'd be like, play as much as i can, let them hear everything i do... but Chet, he's just listening and enjoys even when he feels it's not his turn.
Everything we see, or are exposed to, adds to our bank of knowledge. Whether good, bad or indifferent, we need all of this knowledge in order to put together a complete picture of the world that we live in. To refuse to recognize ANY knowledge, is to embrace ignorance. Anyone who ever "thumbs downed" anything has only shown that he or she prefers to remain ignorant.
This was awesome! I always knew Jerry could play but I didn't know he could play like that! Holy Smokes! Then there's Chet.. We all knew he could play. One of the all time greats.
These guys were Soooo timeless and had so much fun together.. Cool to see them playing two Kirk Sand model guitars..Jerry on his custom model and Chet on the series he designed for Gibson
BOTH WORLD CLASS and with Glen Campbell and Roy Clark forget-about-it , these guys were doing stuff in the 60 's that rock in roll guitarists are just starting to do today with Hybrid picking and finger picking technique and yes it is true, Eddie Van Halen asked Alice Cooper to get him a lesson from Glen Campbell
Jerry had such a unique style he turned down his ax for certain songs nobody could match his rigs, elvis recorded guitar man and it didn't sound right so jerry came and did the opening part and it fixed the song, turns out he turned his guitar just for that song and nobody figured it out!
Love to hear Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed play together on the guitars they are both the greatest ever. They make you just sit there and listen and watch them make those guitars play that beautiful music.
Had this friend who played bass who could never understand why people fell over themselves when he busted out the fretless. To quote him, "dunno what everyone is going on about. The notes are in the same damn place." Lol
Yes. Mark o'connor is superb. To say the least. But nobody had more style. Technique and personality than Jerry. He was a real. Down home. Rowdy. Good Tim in. But. With every other imaginable virtue one could possess
It doesn't hurt that they had some of the best backup musicians in the world- Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas on dobro, Brett Mason (a monster), and Pat Bergeson.

I read that someone asked Chet how it feels to be the best guitarist in the world. He said I may be well known but Jerry Reed is the best guitarist. Here we have both of them.
A work friend knew l liked Chet... came in on monday Sunday was his shopping Flea markets...said to me Think you'll like what i found and handed me 17 chet albums from the fleas of Somebody's estate sale. Thank you Gary R. for thinking of me. I cd'd all of them and carried them in the road service van I drove for 13 years as a Mech-tech millwright.for the 15 branches of the corp. Carried a guitar always. ❤
If you ever really wondered what toppled Bert Reynolds over in his later years, it was Jerry's passing. The mansion, the cars, the boat on the small lake at his place all just went silent and rotted into the ground, just like his marriage. Sad stuff. But that is the light Jerry brought to people's life. It just so happened to be the brightest source for Bert and to have lost that, well..... The story writes itself.
Thanks! Listening again, his style in this solo just reminded me of the fiddling heard in the song "Too Gone Too Long" by Randy Travis. After doing some googling, from what I can tell it might be him on that Rand Travis recording too.
