This guy had a great ear, a lot of soul, fine knowledge of chords, a unique sense of style and cool, original licks. He had weak chops but could keep you tuned in all night. Today, we have too many iron-lipped screamers who mainly exploit that aspect of their playing. Listen to Chet!
I like to play in the deep register. I was never a high-note specialist. My range goes from the bottom of the horn up to around C or D. High D is about it for me... about two-and-a-half octaves, I think. But in these two-and-a-half octaves, I can say everything I have to say. -Chet Baker
@@albertmoore4445 Personally, I’m a lead trumpet player and I have no problems even up to high G with full sound, but when I improvise, I don’t like to go above C, even 2 octaves are too much for me to express my thoughts
I assume that his opening 4 bars on this solo is a funky version of "I Got Rhythm". It certainly sounds like it to me. I don't know whether others think so?
