I heard Chet Baker Sings at a friend's house many years ago, then found out that he was a phenomenal trumpet player after. I was moved by the deep melancholy in his singing. Upon reading about his life, it became clear that the sadness he wore on his sleeve whilst performing was all too genuine, making his performances so naked and poignant. I saw him interviewed once and asked if he'd do an autobiography. He replied that he probably wouldn't, as he couldn't imagine anyone believing it. RIP Chet, the Prince of Cool. 🎺
I really wish Chet sung more. I’m not a huge fan of the trumpet (he’s good, no doubt about that. It’s just in general, I don’t like trumpets). I feel like he should’ve played a different instrument, like the piano or the saxophone. But then again, I’m not really into jazz, so what do I know?
i watched the hauntin biopic born to be blue with the fab Ethan Hawke but also never knew much beyond this song. So very heartbreaking and chilling, filled with idk what exactly but mesmerizing and also so effortless ❤. RIP to the unique sounds of Mr. Chet Baker!!!
This is so true. Not only was he a great singer with a one-of-a-kind haunting voice, but his improvisation skills were insane as well. The ability to hone the skill of less is more to create melodies that stick with you is just something that I could never do in my experience with jazz so far.
@@breed4052 Seems to me the band didn't quite know how to back him. He was trying to go rubato in the intro and they were trying to give it a beat before he wanted one.
I feel so sorry for Chet, I look at his face and I see pain and loneliness, because of all what he suffered he continued performing oustanding pieces of music. Thank you very much Mr. Chet Baker ❤️
Beautiful song. You can see he is missing a teeth (perhaps a blue eye). He was in a fight in Italy due to drugs. Even with this sad event he still performed a stellar performance. He could switch from what ever state he was in to an incredible performer in no time. RIP Chet
No...Chet lost that teeth when he was a kid. It’s difficult to notice because he rarely smile. Then he was jailed in Italy for false drugs prescriptions. The “famous “ aggression where he lost his teeths was at the end of 60’. Cheers
Sipping an ice cold cane sugar 𝒞𝑜𝒸𝒶-𝒞𝑜𝓁𝒶 with rum and lime while *Chet Baker's My Funny Valentine* is playing from an unlicensed Mexican radio station at a fuel stop convenience store in a hot two road southern Arizona town in the middle of nowhere.
I've never heard this sung so beautifully, and I have several versions by several singers. Chet Baker, always sadly missed, so handsome, until drugs ruined him.
The drugs and shit hurt him, but the accident was a killer, consider the man wasn't supposed to survive, let alone ever perform again! But he did thru sheer bloody-mindedness, and he never stopped again till he passed! So as far as I think he was never ruined, because he was always beautiful!!! 💖💖💖💖👏👏👏👏
@greg wigren done my own time with hep c, plus had a tough relationship at the same time. Chet & Eva soothed my soul many times.Oh it does do the heart a good rest when you just need it!!!
+James Del ACTUALLY actually, he wore shades because of all the drugs he was on; they were probably all messed up and the light would hurt his eyes. His teeth are knocked out from his drug dealer or something. The movie Born to be Blue is an Ethan Hawke documentary/drama thingy about Chet Baker and it comes out very soon :)
Chasu you are absolutely right on both counts - the lights and the teeth. The lights burned a performer and often would actually blind a performer back in the days. Sadly, Chet sustained serious injuries to both teeth, mouth as a whole and I believe his ribs (unconfirmed). It showed some strength that he overcame this attack to return and bring us many more years of jazz master performances on disc and stage. Very sad ending in Amsterdam however in May 1988 - I believe a plaque marks the location of his home there.
I agree with that. Chet Baker had such an amazing natural tone to his voice, he didn't need to use much vibrato. He tended to sing a long absolutely perfect and pure tone and bring in a little vibrato at the end. Yep.
I'm a fetus and I love this type of music. All my friends listen to the sounds of their mom's belly. Not me, it's all about Chet Baker. Wishing I was born in this era? Hell, I can't wait to be born at all. See you guys in 6 more months!
Oreo9191 Blah he stretches time, breaks little rules, jazz music is about finding freedom, when you can’t, it’s accommodating, it’s about when you find your own breath and for how long you want to keep it. It’s about the moment you live that thing. It tells a story,by saying something else.
Incredible. Chet Baker at his most captivating, on some random night in 1959 Torino, Italia. People out for dinner and drinks, they go to some club and watch this. It's too hot to handle.
Guysssss, you’re all so beautiful in the comments... hearing and healing! Love you all! Wishing all who see this love and light, new beginnings and peace in your heart and soul ❤️✨🌟🦋
never have I heard such a perfectly balanced second/follow up sax solo, the way lars gullin kicks in after that perfect trumpet solo is sick, try coming in second after chet baker!!!
Sad & brilliant life. It's amazing how he was still able to keep his tone both singing and playing after he lost his teeth. Loved his phrasing. He was the James Dean of Jazz but even more talented!
even when he was younger he still had the personal sound to him. Thank god for people like you who keep posting real videos of real musicians who made real music for a change
Chet Baker touch my heart every time he sings and play...never will forget him. I ove him for so many years and fell him alive near me when his songs are here again! Bless yuotube!!
Damn. At times like this, with everything going crazy, isn`t it good to be able to lean on these great people and what they left us. Doesn`t it remind you of how good life is with this music.
He was a genius who understood and used the boundaries that exist outside of music. Like a painter who mixes grit, dirt and even blood with the medium. Nothing is off limits, only new realms as all art should be.

Its all impro! Man they were real musicians! Playing by the ear! Chet you'll be missed. I've just starting out on learning trumpet! Chet being my inspiration, watching videos of people doing his impression motivates me more! It's my dream to be able to play Chet's tracks and make music like him! Much respect and love!
Chet Baker was soooo musical. His phrasing is just wonderful. And also, that's what separates his singing a bit. All those Sinatras etc. just stick to the script, but he is singing the phrases like a horn line. More like Satchmo, really.
Doesn't matter how old you are just listen and enjoy. And this is a wonderful time to be born cause you can plug in your headphones, get on the internet and listen to whatever you want to whenever you want to.
What? No technique? Absolutely exceptional technique. I've never heard such vocal control. It's what makes his performance so sublime and perfect. So there.

Chet Baker is fantastic :) He does have vibrato. Vibrato is the note moving and it does! Its beautiful and very very well done! His range is his soul baby :)
The essence of coolness. Hiding behind the mike with shades on and singing with that sweet yet strong voice. What a show. This is the real jazz that never gets played on the radio. Why is that? From the album from the same name. It's my favorite of his. It's all vocal pieces.
Mr.GilbertoCanova.Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful music...For sure all the musicians are "wonderful".Mr. Romano Musolini also is a talented pianist. Thanks so much again.Cheers to all jazz lovers from New Orleans the city of jazz.
To Miss. Silvia Buratto. I think you right Miss. Silvia. Chet was a tormented person, that it the reason he was so talented and his voice so sad and sexy. I recommend to you and all the Chet's fans " Concierto de Aranjuez" with other great musician like Paul Desmond, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, Steve Gadd and Roland Hanna, it is a wonderful version of this magnificent piece. Cheers to all Chet's fans from New Orleans the city of jazz.
Gus Edgar: Thanks!!! every once on while I come back here!!....hohoho I am very busy lady and as you know it is sooo much music to hear in this "media". Nevertheless Chet Baker is "one of a kind musician" that I adore... Cheers from New Orleans the city of jazz.
My inexpressible inspirationnnnnn! I love you! You always have been with me while I interpret my tunessss of Jazz! What kind of soul you did have here! Rest In Peace the voice of my lifeeee!
Oh my god. I just realized where Layne Staley might have got his whole ''thing'' from. The resemblance in style is uncanny. His singing, the deep vibrato, his posture, the shades, even the way he holds the mic....can't be a coincidence.
Great song and interpretation. If you ever wondered what Chet was thinking when he went out that window, listen to the song ""Chet Baker's Unsung Swan Song" by David Wilcox.
