Chris you just saved me a bunch of fucken time man . I just got a tank from summit with the 3 vents . now I know what I have to do with these things . Thanks man . Vented gas cap .
Vented gas caps leak on those cars that have the fill in behind the lic plate, that's why they make non vented caps, Best way to vent is to buy a one way in line valve and put it on the vent .
I’m pretty sure I learned how to rebuild a steering gear from you several years ago... I remember your voice and your demeanor and its hella funny considering how many videos I watch a day.
I am going to replace the fuel tank in my 70 El Camino, I am getting a non-vented fuel tank to replace mine. I will get a vented fuel cap. will this take care of my venting needs? I am also going to eventually change go from mechanical fuel pump to electric, I have heard that I will need to install a fuel return line when I install my throttle body fuel injection, will I need to consider buying a different fuel tank setup in preparation for this change? maybe one with a fitting for a fuel return line? I really enjoy your videos on all the different things you do to your A body GM cars. they are very helpful. thank you for these vids.
Yea my tank is completely rusted out and it leaks so wanted to find tank to match n fit..the tank that i took down looks alot like the tank you have in video but one of the vent is lil closer to right vent on corner
If my 72 skylark had a vapor return line would it be next to the fuel line? I like the idea of just buying a vented cap and blocking the 3 or 4 vent lines. Will this work with an inline fuel pump?
yes, it’s a 5/16” steel line right next to the steel fuel line.. If you run an electric fuel pump you don’t have vapor lock problems and dont need to hook it up
the charcoal canister is the filter for the evap system ( gas tank vents ) the charcoal makes the gas vapor not flammable as the air is sucked back into the engine.. if you plug the 3 or 4 evap lines on the tank it eliminates all problems .. if you don’t plug them that charcoal can is the vent for your gas tank.. I pull all that crap off and plug the tank because it is dangerous
I have a 68 El Camino and my fuel gauge just stopped working. Do you think problem is in the tank or at the dash. I know it could be many things, but any suggestion would help. I put in a new wiring harness 10 yrs ago.
on the rear harness in the trunk ground out the tan wire and see if the gauge goes to full.. then you know its the sending unit.. ive had new sending units drop dead in 2 years before
@@chriscraft77022 I have a 70 chevelle with a carb. I am having an issue with ventilation in the tank. I am trying to figure out why the tank isnt venting itself. Pressure in the tank is fairly high and I dont want to cause an issue. When the fuel gets hot it gets much worse. This is a new issue to my chevelle and I am trying to figure out what got stopped up.
I dont know what to tell you... cars came like this from the factory.. I have never had any problems.. sounds like you need to get a vented gas tank.. (evap tank, like in the video)
Hello Chris, I have installed a LS 5.3L Fuel Injected motor in my 71 Chevelle. Those three vented lines, would I need to have to install them? If not, What is your suggestion to remove them?
well, in your situation you need a whole different setup for fuel injection.... what have you done so far to the tank? i just need to know where you are.... in order to help
Thank you Chris. i have a 5.3L LS engine, installed with a 4L60 Transmission. i have a regular fuel tank. i need help to install my fuel lines, fuel pump, shift linkage, dash, engine harness, body harness, and vintage air. then body work, and paint.
John Smith The list of mods to go with your engine is endless... too much for me to explain in text... but you will need an electric fuel pump and a factory size return line to the bottom if the tank.. HIGH PRESSURE fuel line is needed and just the lines are over $100
My 72 el camino doesn't have the charcoal canister so when I checked the tank I saw that one of the evap lines ran right back to the fuel return line on the sending unit is that normal or is it bad the other one runs to the driver side header like you stated
I have a 1972 oldsmobile replaced the tank problem i have now is getting gas from the tank to the carburetor I've used an electric pump also didn't do anything 🤷♂️
if it’s a carb that’s fine.. high pressure fuel injection has a return that runs into the liquid gas because it would blow fumes and spray gas everywhere it it returned to the top of the tank
@@chriscraft77022 yeah ,i was just mainly concerned if anything attached to the other end of those outlets inside the tank that would make it a issue to run a return
just by a gas tank sealer kit.. that’s what I did.. the one from summit is good.. I thought it was bad but I took the tank out and it looks the same 3 years later ..
www.tanksinc.com tanks brought me here, I was looking at ways to vent my tank this site has a vent that seals if you flip the car, there is alot of tech info on this site...
i dont know after seeing the shit that you went though i think i will just flush out the tank after i drain it. screw all that noise not for me that's for sure. Larry Broad 1970 el camino custom 350 350
After 46 years working on EFI vehicles & carb vehicles, the cap and carbon canister is misunderstood. Carb=non-vented cap>if cap is behind license plate (non-vent-out+2psi in) Carb w/o canister>cap is 2psi in+1psi out (Old School prior to 66) Carb w/canister>cap is 2psi in+1psi out (1 fuel line at pump/tank vapor to canister/TVV to intake) Carb w/canister>cap is 2psi in+1psi out (2 fuel lines at pump/tank vapor to canister/TVV to intake/return liquid line 2 at pump) Carb w/canister>cap is 2psi in + 1psi out (2 fuel lines at pump/tank vapor to canister/computer controlled vapor purge to intake/in-leaded/July 79) EFI (TBI-Multi Port)w/canister>cap is 2psi in+2psi out/CCV vapor purge) OBD-2 w/canister>cap 2psi in+2psi out/EVAP Test/CCV purger+tank vent) Most all locking caps do not pass EVAP test. Activated carbon stores gas vapors/allows for filling/burns fuel paid for/newer style can be mounted at rear/ requires roll-over valve/all w/2psi in require vent from tank to top of filler tube. Activated carbon canisters get warm during filling/exothermic action/if missing-plugged-crimped lines-blocked off/may-will cause difficult refueling event/aspirator tube at pump will kick off fuel flow. EFI/OBD-2/2018 or newer>cap is 3psi out/1psi in/EVAP Vent-Purge (Note) Programming can delete EVAP testing, yet allow purge/rear mount canister/gas fumes captured during re-fill/roll over valve safety-high mount loop in hose in fender above filler neck/burns gas fumes paid for/no fueling problems/higher MPG/endothermic reaction when fumes removed during purge/explains high hump in tank-separate liquid from fumes/roll over valve internal/aftermarket outside in vent line/no vent line+provide foam-filter to vent in to canister. (60+Years covered/salvage yard truck canisters+ hose connections to adapt/canister sized to fuel tanks/larger better or ok/simply volume of trapped hydrocarbons you paid for! Exothermic = warming / Exothermic = cooling (Note; Improper tank venting can cause can create tank pressure with wrong cap, venting strategy, improper hose routing, plugging or carb flooding. Always check vent lines for small carbon bits. These are indicators that the canister was flooded with raw fuel or bad spring-loaded end screen inside canister. Each activated carbon granule can hold 4,000 times its own weight in vapor hydrocarbons. Please think about your tank vapor strategy before you have problems. This is facts, not brag.
all I did was run it like a 70 factory would have.. I’ve had a few and parted out many... interesting how a non vented tank could flood a carb cause the pressure to the fuel pump. That’s the first time I ever heard that.. thanks
Chris Craft >What you did is perfectly fine. You videos and entire channel is very interesting. I try to add value to those who like to read comments after watching, liking and subscribing. After decades of working at dealers, vehicles new and old, I used the smoke machine on the strange green cap, scan-tool commanding solenoids shut, looking a captured data from 5 previous fail records and having adaptors for tanks & caps. Reading the diagnostic flow charts to the point of complete memory. I was there, checking in new vehicles off the semi in July/August 1979 when two build one month before burned regular fuel, then seeing the rest with cat, Unleaded sticker under gas cap & gas gauge and gazing at the tiny flapper door inside the filler neck. I am just old. Even Clint Eastwood turned 90 on March 31st the year. I just wish my wife picked a house with larger garage.
thanxs chris i got all the body work done going to primer then paint it dark midnight blue next month with a new fugi simi pro turbine sprayer all the reviews have been great vary little overspray and no orange peel. Larry Broad
