In this video I have a look at a Chevrolet Impala that was towed in as a crank no start. My gut was telling me it was the fuel pump but how do we know for sure? Let's find out. -Enjoy!

Thank you for all the great videos about tools and vehicle maintenance Eric. I've done a lot of brake jobs on my 2002 Silverado 2500HD truck and Many other vehicles. Today I did a SMA quality brake job, IMO. Used the blast cabinet on the brackets, Lisle piston tool, 3M wheel stud hub scuffer tool, of course a cookie wheel, Permatex Brake Lube, Fluid Filmed the hubs, and a ton of brake clean. I thought I knew what I was doing(to a point). Thank you for the free lessons. I love the videos and really appreciate all you do. You my friend are awesome. Thank you again.

Eric O of South Main Auto You're one hell of a mechanic... Since I started watching you not only do I learn things but I think it great you take the time to do a proper diagnosis. Then you take additional time to track down the wiring issues if they're are any. Most garages I have seen just do quick diagnoses and then try to get it repaired fast and sometimes buy unneeded parts. Mr. Eric O are a true auto mechanic and it is too bad you are far away cause I would let you fix my cars.

Hi Eric. I'm a new subscriber and I've been binge watching your videos and I watched one where one of the relays that powered the pcm unit turned green with corrosion. Well, Subaru have recalled over a million cars because the brake light switch was doing the same with the green corrosion. Apparently the cause of it is to do with "fumes" off of different fragrances. Perfume, clothes softeners etc. It was just a thought. And going back to your videos, you are a natural. You also have a great family as well. Thumbs up from England.. 👍 🇬🇧

A while back you had a video of a Jeep that sent misfire codes when the engine ran fine. My 2000 GMC's money light would flash above 65 MPH and stop flashing under 60. I changed the crank position sensor like you did on the Jeep (after watching a U tube video of where the sensor lives on this truck). I used the OEM part like you said to do. No more flashing light. I can speed again without being distracted. Thanks.

I love your videos. Very great teacher and you have taught me a lot. I have an interesting problem...I have a 2005 Chevy Monte Carlo LT. 3.8 non-SC. 165k miles. I just changed the fuel pump, as it had little to no pressure, intermittently starting the car. Now...new water pump (AC Delco), all new sensors (ICM, TPS, IAC, MAP, MAF), new fuel pressure regulator, and now the new fuel pump. My problem is, it builds a ton of pressure when I turn it to on (between 48-52psi)...still intermittently starting but....I noticed when I turn the key off (after running or just in on), I have a fuel pressure bleed off very quickly...within 30 seconds it drops to almost zero. I have checked all the lines and the fuel filter was changed last year. I am beating my head against the wall on this. Normally, it should hold pressure for at least 10 minutes after shut off, correct? When it is running and I snap the throttle, pressure goes up a few psi. When she runs, she runs terrific. I pulled the vacuum line off the regulator and the vacuum is almost louder than the motor, so that shouldn't be an issue. PSI goes up to about 58-60psi when vacuum line is off. Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Hey! I can't believe it but I actually have a tool suggestion. I've seen instances of you using the sawzall where it looked like the blade moving so far back and forth was causing some issues. I often use an oscillating tool with a bi-metal blade in those scenarios and find it works better. You can get blade shapes that get into smaller areas than a cutting wheel and cut with much smaller movements than a sawzall. Just a thought. Thanks for another great video!

As a quick tip.... If you take out the shrader valve, pressurise the system with compressed air. It forces the fuel pump to run backwards and can sometimes kick it into life....
@fascistpedant758

Wouldn't there usually be a check valve at the outlet in the pump? Maybe sucking fuel through it would work better.

Eric O. is a CHAMPION. What an amazing businessman for starting on this at 7:30pm. I bought a Delphi fuel pump from NAPA for my '96 F150 rear tank. I didn't get 2,000 miles out of it before it quit. Of course, it quit with 15 gallons of fuel in the tank. I was NOT a happy camper. I don't know if it just couldn't muster the 60psi the old straight six needs, or what. Ridiculous.

I'm okay with the Delphi brand parts. Great gut diagnosis. Lots of folks will drive their vehicle down to the "E" everytime before getting gas which tends to make the fuel pump wear out sooner than later due to rising heat factors. Best to go to the fuel depot when 1/4 tank or so.

Your Big Hammer work reminds me of my old Mini - electric fuel pump failed in the middle of London in rush hour. Ended up whacking it a few times with my hand - started clicking & got me 50 miles back home! Really sucks that you have to take the tank out to change that fuel pump as a result of Chevrolet saving a few cents.

@ColtaineCrows
@ColtaineCrows 5 лет назад
One thing the spray and pray does when you're actually working is that it tends to soften the rust a little bit allowing the threads to cut through a bit easier, but that's about it. Omega 636 does penetrate pretty dang fast though, that's the stuff we use at work. 'Spensive though, like a $1000 for ~2.6 US gallons.

My old 84 VW Jetta (see user icon) has a fuel tank access panel under the rear seat, but uses a factory external fuel pump!(?!) Figured it's there to service the fuel level float. Had to drop the tank on my dad's old 1992 Buick Regal to change the fuel pump, much like the Impala's. Sometimes car engineering doesn't make much sense from a serviceability perceptive. I guess GM didn't want potential liability issues with fuel vapors in the vehicle's interior, plus it's cheaper to produce. Typical GM... Great content as always SMA! BTW - I really like the relay switch - gonna use that in the future!

I'm sure lot's of people know about lack of Fuel Pump access. Well I know about GM of course and my ford since they are mine and each one has needed a pump replacement. The G8 it has access to the pump now and so does the ford the tanks weren't full when it happened just between 3/4 and full enough. The other issue with the GM is the fact that the filter is in the tank with the pump no less I guess they are keeping each other company. As always Thank you the best video's around town

glad to finally find a video showing exactly what happens when you try to start. seeing this video makes me more confident this is the problem. i got an 03 midnight blue (she so sexy) and she drives just fine with just over 160K on her. but like yours in the video i either gotta crank a few times to get it to start or it’ll just crank and crank and crank without turning the engine over. especially with the large jump your car did around 2:03 when you were starting; mine does the exact same. so i feel way better about me dousing my lock ring with PB blaster and sitting in my trunk trying to fix this😂😂props to you my boi

I drained a full tank of gasoline from a diesel Cruze Monday. I was alone and couldn't push it into the garage from where the tow truck left it. He was nice enough to top off the gas tank right before he parked it. Had no way to siphon the old gas out due to the roll over valve in tank. And I don't have a lift so we had to drop the tank in the yard using Jack's, fun times. If anyone needs to strip any furniture I have 15 gallons of varnished fuel you can have 🤣

I was trying to defy gravity by using a scissor jack to lift up one corner of my car, put some blocks under it, use it to lift it up a bit more, add more blocks, when go to the next corner, do the same. I did that to all three corners (up in the air at the same time) then like an idiot I left the fourth corner of the car sitting on the scissor jack. I proceeded to install the neon light tubes under the car when I heard a "tink" noise and felt something hit me in the back of my head! I thought maybe some dirt or something fell off the car. A minute or so later another tink noise and something hit me again! I turned around and another tink noise and a flake of black paint hit me square in the forehead. The black paint was from the scissor jack. Right as I looked at it I could see the sides of it bending out. I rolled out from under the car milliseconds before it came crashing to the ground. That was close.

OMG! What would a video by Eric O. be without the air compressor coming on. Personally I like it cause it reminds me of those days gone by when there was such a thing as a Full service filling station., and the Lady! there's you're problem, had a low tire. She's trying to explain what's going on and the compressor kicks on. Lovely......... what's the problem ma'am?

That parking lot full of jobs is what has him there trouble-shooting after 7 PM so he can order the right parts and have them tomorrow and get this one down the road.

When i was working as a tech I had the pump go out in my car at the time, a 1986 Pontiac 6000. I ordered a pump, but needed to drive 20 miles to get home. Luckily. Banging on the pump with my own "Billy" would get the pump going good enough to get me home.

reminds me of a 95 chevy truck, they was on highway it started running rough, they pull into gas station fill tank from 1/8th to over filled topped off and it didn't start to leave the pump. no amount of hammering on the tank helped, 4F weather with howling wind. tow truck it here and some sucker had to change it without a lift using a single floor jack :| I cheated and use an electric pump and hose down filler, I had gas in everything I could find, 5 gallon buckets, 3 cans, large pots lol.

Ever been foiled by the rollover safety/ accident cutoff? I know the Impala here doesn't have one but I've had a couple where people swore they needed a new fuel pump until I reset that. Turns out their 'last thing' they remember being a big bump was oh well yeah I ran it off the road and into the ditch.
