2014 Chevrolet Silverado V6 my son drove the truck after the flash engine light was flashing for two days and then the truck shut off and he had it towed. I went and checked the truck out and ran a scan on the truck showed P305 and P 300. I found cylinder one and cylinder three coil packs bad so I changed all the plugs and the wires also they were fouled and very dirty and looked to be original. I checked to make sure that I was getting spark and I was. I tried to start the truck and it would just turn over with no start. I checked the mass airflow sensor and sprayed it out with mass airflow sensor cleaner. I also change the camshaft positioning sensor. Still no start. Any ideas I tried starter fluid still no start
Yes I didn’t unplug the relay. Testing like this confirmed our opinions. Had figured it was my fuel pump..even after spending $160 for a fuel pump testing kit.. this saved us some time.
LMAO I agree. Theirs a few tips or tricks some people should know tho. Sometimes a bad fuel pump relay etc can be fixed temporarily by tapping or reseating. And yes banging a starter while trying to crank many times does work. Saves you a tow but will not solve the problem. I've done it on diesel automatic semis many times. Whack that think with a rubber mallet while somebody trys to start it. It'll almost always fire. Fuel Pump relays can be intermittent. Pulling it and reseating it or tapping it on ground sometimes may get that pump to start working. But again lol your still broken. Gets you to the local parts store tho with out a tow. What he's doing is showing you hard way. Listen for a hum before turning your car to crank position. No humming. It's almost always 1 of the 3. Bad Pump, Bad Relay, Bad Fuse.
The other thing you can do is bang on the center of the fuel tank and in most cases the engine will fire. When you hit the tank the brush assembly in the electric motor will make contact again and the vehicle may start and run. I used this technique to get off of a busy street when my car died so I could get off of the main road and stop blocking traffic.
@@justinswehla3793 Yes in many cases this will work for a short time. This only applies to in tank electric fuel pumps. I used a mag lite flashlight on a friends vehicle and he was able to drive home on the back roads and to the mechanic a day later to have the fuel pump repaired. You can check on repair costs in your area online with repair pal .
Oh no way that's super cool thank u for telling me that Haha I'm in a similar boat as your friend! Except mine is an older car so sadly this time I cant use the ol bop
I was wondering about that, I have been having problems with my Dodge Durango 2000, I had a very weak battery, we thought that was it, swapped in a better battery and it worked fine for like a week and then the same problem happened again, out of the blue, the engine would not start after just going into our local grocery store, I came out and it would not start, my friend banged on my fuel tank and it fired up, managed to get it home, so I guess it’s safe to say it is my fuel pump then right?
Boy Oh Boy!!!! I watched all the relevant videos re engine codes/crank but no start. i changed throttle body sensors, accelerator pedal sensor and module and still crank no start....THEN came across your video and followed your advise...and ...WOW!!!!!!....it works...heaven sent....considering I'm about to give up...THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!!!
Thanx for posting this video! I'll try this out. I'm almost certain it's the fuel pump gone out on my truck. This will either confirm it or tell me to check something else on my crank, no start issue.
Word of Caution!!! If the car backfires you can catch the car on fire. Best to use the carburetor cleaner sparingly and have a fire extinguisher at the ready!!! Caught my Yukon on fire today.
Sir thank you! thank you! Thank you! Coming from a homeless man that all I have is my truck a local Mech was asking over $330 that i do not have to fix my truck and then God, sent me your Video, and it worked it WORKED!!!😂 under $5 so thank you and God bless you always Sir keep up the great work.
Brake cleaner works great too. Ss long as you buy the brake clean that says "Extremely Flammable " on the label. Not a lot needed and I usually crack the throttle about half way or a bit less so the spray gets by the butterfly in the throttle body.
Be careful not to use too much starter fluid, especially when the engine is not cranking while spraying the fluid. My son literally blew up his intake manifold.
Your not 100% right, what you have determined is that you have a fuel delivery problem. Corroded injector harness, blown fuse controlling injector, harness at fuel pump and a few others. Describing it this way may lead DYI’s on the wrong path and pull tank , put new pump in and still no start. Starting fluid , as others have said may not be good if used incorrectly, get air intake cleaner or injection cleaner, less volatile but still combustible to achieve what your describing and greatly reduces accidents
I use this process as well but it's really just a start to the Diag process as many other parts on the Fuel side or could be the issue, I wouldn't just say Bad Pump, but sometimes it is just that.
Im surprised no one has said anything about the possibility of a clogged fuel filter? In most cars you can hear the fuel pump prime once the key is turned into the accessory position. If you have a bad relay/fuse the pump wont kick in and you wont hear it prime at all. A good indicator of a bad or clogged filter is if you can still hear the pump trying to prime but makes an other than 'normal' sound for your particular vehicle. An extremely clogged filter will cause a fuel feed issue bad enough to prevent your car from not only starting but continuing to run (even if you kickstart the motor with starting fluid).
Diesel truck yes gas not so much In fact I have never seen a car with a filter so plugged it would not at least start. & pumps do not run in the ACC position.
How would i check fuel filter on chrysler sebring 2004 cause its doing what you said i can hear pump trying to prime but its not as strong or loud as usual its more weak and quiet does that mean its just clogged or fuel pump bad or going bad but either way car wont start now it just shut off while driving at 60 mph
Can fuel pumps intermittently fail? Like sometimes they work sometimes they don’t? My ranger wasn’t starting and I couldn’t hear it priming when I turned the key, the next day i heard it prime and then it started. Would that be an electrical issue or fuel pump still
Solution One!! You’re absolutely right. Ford Junk! If you miss treat a Toyota or Honda or Nissan... it’ll be awhile before it starts to give you trouble but even if you treat a Ford good it’ll still find away to mess up on you.. That’s just my experience...
I use this method as a diagnostic tool on a petrol engine to check if the ignition system is working, it 'could' help in diagnosing a bad fuel pump ? But it's not a hard and fast diagnosis that 'you have a bad fuel pump' there's a few more variables of what could be wrong ..... great video though 👍👍
I tapped on the fuel tank a few times with a small hammer and my dodge fired right back up. And used a LITTLE started fluid, reason being I've heard of engines getting ruint if you spray to much
WD-40 a bit safer than starting fluid. to my surprise it works well on 4 stroke gas engines. Diesel? not so much on cold start, but it helps & leaves a little lube that ether [starting fluid] removes.
91PHS10 The spray bypasses the complete fuel system to show it has a spark and will start with fuel. Could be the relay still, since it doesn't need the relay to start, with the spray.
@@91PHS10 he took the relay out to simulate a bad pump dude. If you did this with the relay in then it could be the relay or something else like injectors
kinda just proves the vehicle has fire don't wont some one to replace a $300 fuel pump over a relay or ground or bad injectors this is a great diagnostic tool but before replacing your pump test the pump with a meter /test light to see if you have good power and ground if you don't have power it could be due to relay fuse ground etc.
He didnt say it wad definitively a bad fuel pump. He said bad fuel pump or no fuel situation. You just made a really long explanation of what he said/did in a nuttshell. Diagnose a bad fuel pump or no fuel situation. If it fires you no its in the fuel delivery. If it dont, your looking elsewhere, like no spark. Exactly what was shown here/said here
Easy way to check as suggested by ATG & me: 1. Required two people. 2. Open the gas cap 3. Turn key to #2 but do not start the car 4. Place ear next to gas lid & listen to the fuel pump making a sound 5. If you can hear the hum sounds, then rule that pump is good. 6. You replaced that Fuel Filter ever 3 years? Open output hose & input into 1 gal milk & start
Just to clarify, the FUEL PUMP RELAY has to be removed FIRST? Before doing this test? My situation, I have spark, turns over fine, but spraying starting fluid like you show gets nothing. I'll try removing the relay tomorrow and see what happens. EDIT: Turns out it was the MAF sensor that was dirty. I removed it, blew it out with compressed air, reinstalled and my truck started right up.
cool I am having weird random non starting problem on my f 150 next time it acts up i will try this, at least it will narrow things down my mechanic cannot duplicate the problem.
I had a bad fuel injector in cylinder 5. I got that taken care of. Before that I had the fuel filter changed. After the fuel filter was changed, the car started sputtering and will die out once it warms up. Is this caused by the fuel pump?
Dude, I toss a known working relay of same part# (a/c blower, cooling fans) in the fuel pump slot. if no fuel delivery then run the +12vdc from battery thru a long test lead with bed-o-nails alligator clips hooked directly to the pump harness near the tank. odds are it isn't the wire entry point of the pump. That and checking for a solid ground @ the pump or establishing one if still a no go. 10 minutes. peace of mind knowing electrical is doin it's thing
The Positive terminal on the pump needs to be confirmed. A Test light is my go to for finding power. A DVM works as well. Bear in mind the priming power will only there for around 2 seconds so have someone crank while you probe. Again, I use a test lead clip w a bed of nails, so with a long enough wire you can crank it yourself. It's also handy for testing for that 5v pcm ecu pulse power. Go to ATS Labs for the clips.
Also if you got a diesel I never recommend using straight starting fluid on a diesel Always use a little WD-40 with it not as hard and your not dry starting it
Have someone prime it and see if relay clicks. Test relay with power and ground, or swap a known good relay in to test. Like if the AC relay is the same swap them.
2011 Chevy Tahoe LTZ 5.3 The fuel indicator is constantly changing from 1/2 tank to 1/4 or empty while driving. The dealership has diagnose it as a fail module. It seems as if every module that located in the rear has failed because of water damage
See i used starting fluid and it did just that. I didn't have this problem until my altenator went bad. Very rarely but sometimes it starts normally without a problem but rarely.
Would this also verify bad injectors? My fuel pump is new and fuel pressure is normal. Crank no start situation, replace crankshaft position sensor, checked, put new spark plug wires, test light shows power to the spark plugs. Soon replacing temp sensor and cleaning injects I guess.
Hey really nice, I’ve known about this for a long time and I’m not bashing on your video at all because it is very helpful to a lot of people, but how does nobody know this trick? Like it’s a pretty simple thing to do and super easy and costs 5 bucks at your local store, but it’s almost sad that you have to put a video up for people to spray STARTING FLUID to START their car, great vid tho and I’m sure it did help a lot of people save hundreds of dollars
What's more surprising is all the people arguing it doesn't work, or it will blow the heads off, or wash down the cylinders, haha. Thanks for the comment.
My van was going great then one morning I turned it over and it cranked over but didn't start my mechanic says it could b electrical fault but it starts with starting fluid do u reckon it's the pump that's gone
of corse its a fuel pump issue and this is what the vid just explained. There clearly isn't fuel being supplied so check the relay then check the pump itself
@@matthewtoomer2181 you're wrong... And you've been wrong several times basically for the same reason... The video suggests that you got a bad fuel pump if you can show that you have spark and it will fire.. it doesn't say you might have a bad ground or you might have a bad relay or you might have a bad control signal or you might have a bad injectors or you might have a clogged fuel filter or you might have a pinched fuel line... The video suggests that what he does indicates that you have a bad fuel pump nothing more and that's why it's incomplete.
Ok so I have a 79 Ford E150. With the starting fluid it did turn on for a bit. Noticed my fuel gauge doesn’t seem to be working and no power to fuel pump (don’t hear it prime) and of course no fuel to carb. It has new battery and spark plugs. 😔
The relay was pulled to "simulate" the pump not working... I put "simulate" in quotes because that's what I said in the video when I Pulled the relay... Ya knoe... ?
You removed the Relay. It wont run with the relay removed.. It could be a good pump with a bad relay. All you showed us was that the engine will start with starting fluid if the vehicle has no relay or fuel pump connected
I have a problem with a 5.2 dodge. It stalls after about 25 minutes or 25 miles. I tried the starting fluid and it started up for a few seconds. So I replaced the fuel pump its in the gas tank along with the filter and regulator, its an assembly. It still stalls after about 25 minutes. It will start back up after a 30 minute cool down and run another 25 minutes. Any help? So with the starting fluid it will start for a few seconds. My guess is the ecm is not sending a signal to the fuel pump after it warms up.
i have an automatic 2001 VW jetta 2.0 - it sat since december 2021 until now april 2023 mobile mechanic came by and put in a brand new battery, refurbished starter, cleaned up the rusted ground connection from the starter to the chassis or transmission whatever it is the car now cranks, but won't start - he then took off one end of the cold air intake and sprayed something into the engine while i started it up but then it died after 2 seconds the gas is original from probably november 2021 , i have about half a tank he is telling me that probably the fuel pump needs to be replaced any ideas if its just bad gas ? i have 87 octane in there
it's really just the got-fire / got-fuel test, for somebody who doesn't want to stick his or her hand into the spark-plug well, maybe for somebody afraid of getting zapped. So: Got Fire. Check. ...next test.
Well mine is a different case car only cranks. But when i give it starting fluid it starts and runs normally not for a short time but runs and i can drive it just fine. When its off it can't start again unless starting fluid is applied doesn't matter if engine is hot or cold. It doesn't start even if i switch on it right back after switching off.
How do you know if it’s the relay or the fuel pump? The guy who is trying to fix my car didn’t mention anything about relay. He replaced the battery and spark plugs was able to drive it around the block. We ordered the official battery and parts because he used the one from his car the first time. Came back the second time to install battery and spark plugs but this time the car wouldn’t start. So now he thinks it is the fuel pump but can’t find the part because it is a saab. He verified with this starter test. I’m wondering now could it actually be the relay instead?
I don't have a comment ,but have a question My van is doing exactly what u showed in your video, but my fuel pump is new about 6 month's! It's a astro van, maybe you would have a suggestion
Aimee Getz Could be relay controlling the pump or clogged filter. Or, honestly could be a bad pump again. I've had a pump fail 2 weeks after I installed it. Weird but it happens.
a21bravo I'm gonna try the littlest first, ( I'll put fuel injection fluid in it, and check the relay,I suppose, before I run out and get another pump, cuz honesty I don't have the money right now, the mechanic charge me 1500 dollars the first time, so I'll start small and work up! What do u think
What does it mean after you spray starter fluid and the engine runs but, doesn't shut off until you turn the key off?Every time I turn the key off, I have to use starter fluid. 2006 Impala 3.9 automatic 4 door. Awesome video. Thanks a lot.
NEVER NEVER NEVER USE STARTING FLUID OR GASOLINE!!! It is too explosive use carb cleaner only it is just hot enough to test fire and will not pop back and catch fire most times if it is a timing issue!!!
You beat me to it! I don't know how many mechanics still do this. If it's a timing issue, it will definitely backfire I followed a guy who use gasoline and it popped that caught fire and the idiot threw dirt in the throttlebody because he didn't have an extinguisher. I had to take the intake off just to get all the dirt out because the client tried to start the vehicle after and sucked all the dirt in.
Does anyone know where in heck is the fuel pump relay on an 88 caravan dodge, owners manual does not mention it, not the Haynes Motor manual? You can jump the fuel pump relay to eliminate that item as well. I would ask is it Possible to bypass the in tank fuel pump easily with just an inline fuel pump ? thanks.
you said it was a bad fuel pump by showing engine runs once spayed. therefore you said you said since it starts you condemned the fuel pump. you ruled out that there maybe a ground lost to the fuel pump or the supply hot wire to pump had a break in the wire. that needs to be varified prior to dropping fuel pump and paying for a fuel pump
So what if mine cranks no starts. But starts with starting fluid as this one did, but mine will stay running once started with starting fluid. What’s your thoughts on that? It’s a foxbody mustang 5.0.

The vehicle will still die without the relay inserted. It may run momentarily but the fuel pump doesn’t just stay on after the vehicle is started unless the relay is inserted. Just saying
