Chevrolet Silverado bad u-joint or slip yoke?

2000 2500 Silverado 6.0 - have the infamous "clunk" when putting it into reverse. Thought it was the U-joints but them seem tight. There's alot of info online about this problem being associated with a bad slip yoke.
I've read that there is a nickel plated yoke that eliminates the clunk. Others have tried to grease it. I haven't greased it yet. Many say the sound comes back when you grease it. Thoughts what the clunk could be?
There is up and down play on the driveshaft/yoke when in neutral. I can almost hear a tapping sound when I'm moving it up and down hard with my hands. Sounds like a yoke issue.

So what is happening is the stock slip yolk (do not know the type of metal it is made of) has worn to the point that there is play when it engages in gear. GM put out on their bulletin that the fix for the issue is to replace the stock slip yolk with a nickle plated slip yolk, which is made of a more durable metal. Edited: Here is the info I found from the bulletin Clunk, Bump or Squawk when Vehicle Comes to Complete Stop or Accelerating from Complete Stop or Accelerating from Complete Stop (Replace Rear Drive Shaft Nickel-Plated Slip Yoke) #01-04-17-004B - (Jan 5, 2005)Clunk, Bump or Squawk when Vehicle Comes to Complete Stop or Accelerating from Complete Stop (Replace Rear Drive Shaft Nickel-Plated Slip Yoke) 1999-2000 Cadillac Escalade (Old Style) 2002-2004 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade EXT 2003-2004 Cadillac Escalade ESV 1996-1999 Chevrolet 1500 Series Extended Cab Short Box Pickup (Old Style) 1996-1999 Chevrolet 1500 Series Regular Cab Pickup and Utility Models (Old Style) 1999-2002 Chevrolet Silverado Extended Cab Short Box (New Style) 1999-2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Series Regular Cab (New Style) 2000-2004 Chevrolet 1500 Series Avalanche, Suburban and Tahoe 2001-2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 Series Regular Cab with Long Bed or Extended Cab (New Style) 2001-2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Series Crew Cab, Short Box (New Style) 1996-1999 GMC 1500 Series Extended Cab Short Box Pickup (Old Style) 1996-1999 GMC 1500 Series Regular Cab Pickup and Utility Models (Old Style) 1999-2002 GMC Sierra Extended Cab Short Box (New Style) 1999-2004 GMC Sierra 1500 Series Regular Cab (New Style) 2000-2004 GMC 1500 Series Yukon, Yukon XL 2001-2004 GMC Sierra 2500/3500 Series Regular Cab with Long Bed or Extended Cab (New Style) 2001-2004 GMC Sierra 2500 Series Crew Cab, Short Box (New Style) 2003-2005 HUMMER H2 with Four Wheel Drive (4WD) or All Wheel Drive (AWD) and One-Piece Propeller Shaft ONLY This bulletin is being revised to add Cadillac Escalade (Old Style) and HUMMER H2 to the Models section. Thanks for this post! I have a 2000 sierra 1500 that had the stop-go “squawk”. Greased the splines and the sound is GONE. As for the clicking and clunking in this video - pretty much normal for the amount of rotational lash the transmission internals, the Tcase internals, and the rear diff internals. The stock oem G80 auto-locker rear diff on GM trucks is also notorious for making “normal” light clicking and clunking sounds as it engages.

The dealer knows exactly what it is. I bought a 2009 Silverado that developed that problem shortly after I drove it off the lot. It felt like driveline binding in 4WD, but I don't have 4WD. The dealer said dirt gets into the slip yoke and causes it to bind. Easy fix is to grease it, but it doesn't last. They replaced it under warranty and it's smooth as silk--for another few years.
@daugela
@daugela 11 лет назад
I agree with the other concerns regarding the slip yoke, but in this case, it has nothing to do with the shaft. This only happens when you go from park to reverse or drive.

It's the differential. I was told it would be expensive - like more than $500 bucks. So I'm just living with it...
@relaxitsonlyagame
@relaxitsonlyagame 3 года назад
How long were you able to go with it like that?
@dsgsnow4610
@dsgsnow4610 2 месяца назад
@@relaxitsonlyagameProbably not long. This is bad u-joints. Usually, they don't wear out until 250-300k miles. You 100% know someone is a bad driver if out of all things, the u-joints go bad, because it means they are going from reverse into drive before fully stopped. Hardly puts wear on the transmission. This is the real reason you don't do it. Differential is fine. "Living with this" will let the driveshaft fall out, either killing you or someone else, who ever runs over it first.
@roncyr7250

Slip yoke is common issue on Silverado's sounds like a ticking noise when driving. Yours may have a grease zerk but this one appears to be seized to me. When you pull it remember it's suppose to move in all directions. Needle bearings are falling out if it's bad.
@wombatcombatprime4489

Check for a bad center support bearing. Mine was worn out on my truck and gave the drive shaft enough play to clunk up and down. Try checking near the bearing by wiggling the shaft up and down.

Its the excess lash between the ring and pinion gears, it is set by a crush washer which over time can be crushed further. You should be able to buy a crush washer eliminator kit to fix it once and for all
@rockysanchez9525
@rockysanchez9525 8 лет назад
Its a pinion bearing.. it worn out causing play in your driveshaft. Depending on how bad it is you also might get a lil shacking at a certain mph. Either rebuild your diff. Or replace rear end.

@daugela

UPDATE: I replaced the slip yoke and it made a WORLD of difference with the clunking sound going from park to drive and from driving away from a complete stop. But the reverse still clunks as it does in the video. The gears in the diff as indicated by some posters were correct. There was shavings and it appears I could use a rebuild. I suspect that was the problem but TOO expensive to fix. Will deal with it until she dies.....

Wow, this was an old comment. I found out later that the motor had been replaced off the books out of a junkyard. The individual who installed it broke the retaining clips on the TCU plug so it had vibrated loose causing the computer to think there was no transmission. I also eventually had to replace the turbo which was also found to be a junkyard replacement from a second donor truck. Everything was great after those were fixed. I didn’t end up posting any videos.

Gear Head, you obviously know your business. I think you have isolated and diagnosed a few problems for a few people. I experienced the clunk when putting the vehicle in reverse but my driveway is on a incline and there is no problem on level pavement. Chevy service department diagnosed the rear end hopping and related it to the slip yoke and they recommended dropping the shaft and lubricating it for $92.17 so I guess I can bite that bullet. Thanks for your input.

How can you even say it's the u joint the whole thing is moving its like the pinion bearing or tcase output shaft bearing
@matthewjeschke
@matthewjeschke 5 лет назад
Yeah I thought same thing. You have to slow the video down to see if clunk is before load is applied to shaft or after. It could be a pinion gear that's walked away from the ring gear, and have a bit much backlash.

daugela I've got a similar clicking sound in my 94 4l60e 2 wheel drive. there's a distinct clunk shifting from forward to reverse, or vice versa. that's play in the differential I noticed while doing my rear brakes, but I also hear a ticking at idle speed, and a chain noise at higher speeds from the rear end. also, I did the 5 mph speed bump test, and it only rattles when the rear tires hit bumps.

@daugela you could have collapsed the crush sleeve, or maybe you just need to shim it (rotate adjusters if needed too). but i'd definately put my money on the diff. only because i can't visually inspect it, only have the video to go off of.

@daugela 13 лет назад
@shoey14 - greasing it is a temporary fix - from what I'm told. Do you see that shinning part of the shaftin the video (part rusty). You pull that out and there are splines in it. That's what you grease.

My 01 Silverado was making a metal on metal clunk when shifting from Park to Reverse or into drive from neutral. Has 260k miles on it so I unfortunately I didn't do anything about it till the transmission went out. The front u joint that connects to the slip yolk had a really bad ujoint that wore completely through the caps and actually took a chunk out of the yolk that is welded to the driveshaft. Had to have it completely rebuilt which set me back $280. It's all aluminum on mine so not surprised it did that much damage. Will not procrastinate in the future. If you haven't already changed those ujoints I would get on it just to make sure. They are easy and cheap compared to what I got to do.

No change of luck, I got the u joints looked at and they seem to be tight. I don't think it's a tranny issue it only has 97k on it. I'm still searching for someone with the same problem, it doesn't make any sense to me that it only happens between 1st and 2nd gear
@davehaag7911
@davehaag7911 9 лет назад
SaM Becker On mine you could not tell the damage done by the ujoint until it was taken apart. With yours only being between 1st and 2nd I seriously doubt it is a ujoint and much more likely a transmission issue. Got mine back yesterday and that clunk is completely gone. Have a great transmission guy here in KC but not sure where you live.

is it bad if my 09 Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab 5.3L V8 does this? like its a really hard clunk then lurch.

Tungsten23 I know this is an old post but my 04 Silverado standard cab v8 4x4 had a minor clunk that came and went we thought it was the rusty muffler but after turning a sharp left out of a parking spot the clunk is LOUD and the truck lurches to the point of I’m afraid to drive it. I looked under it and see nothing but a torn CV boot but I’m not seeing any heat shields or anything odd. Did you figure out what caused yours? Should I have it towed? I’m afraid to drive it.

Is just the slip yoke

Never figured out. I think it's just worn gears....Even the Chevy dealership trans tech doesn't know. Suspects old worn gears...nothing more.

What was the problem?
@Jutt08
@Jutt08 13 лет назад
Yeah, it clunks then lurches back. Then if i put it into park and put it into reverse again its less noticeable. IDK man, its making my 09' feel like a old beater.
@adventureswithmeforever8836

Jutt08 I got the same problem and I’m pretty sure is just the slip yoke
@daugela
@daugela 13 лет назад
@Jutt08 Yes. At first, I'm switching from PARK to REVERSE a few times. Then I go from PARK to DRIVE a few times so you can hear the difference... If it was your U-Joints, it would make the noise everytime. Does it also clunk like it's physically moving forward and jarring underneath?
@Jutt08
@Jutt08 13 лет назад
@daugela, are you putting it into reverse then back into park repeatedly or are you going to reverse, neutral THEN DRIVE? Mine makes a sound when going into reverse first time, then when i put it into park then again into reverse it doesnt do it. i think mine is hopefully u joints...

If it's 4x4 I've heard that what the skid plate and tranfercase hitting one another. Otherwise odd to hear it happening in such a newer truck

Goats Make Soap Co. Repla vee slip yoke, lasts 10k miles. pack grease between the yoke and the splines, lasts 3k miles if your lucky. There's more, but there's no time to list the possible fixes due to it pertaining to different models.

@ArcticAstrophysics

That's one of the phrases I like but also heavily dislike. My 84 dodge runs and works fine, but I'm not going to wait until things start breaking, I'm buying new parts and replacing as much as I can so I don't have to deal with it later. Nothing like having something give out on you when you need it the most, rather than fixing it sooner
@davehaag7911
@davehaag7911 9 лет назад
ArcticAstrophysics On mine had I fixed it sooner it would have been a simple $15 u joint rather then $280 to completely rebuild the driveshaft do to my procrastination
@ArcticAstrophysics

Dave Haag Exactly. If something is cheap and easy to change/fix I always fix it either before or as soon as problems initially arise
