If you have 4wd. You can still do this but use much less grease. Too much grease would squish out and go into joining the transfer case oil. The transfer case on the GM/Chev trucks have clutch plates in them. The excess grease can affect the grip of the Tcase clutch pack and may cause it to slip and wear out sooner. On a 4wd the splines are lubed by the oil in the Tcase. Sometimes a little grease helps if it is knotchy. Just don’t put a lot. Hope that helps! Great video btw.

It is suppose to move as the rear axle articulates. The grease helps the splines to slide smoothly and quietly. If dry, the steel on steel splines get sticky and clunky.

Hey Dave: I have a 2019 Silverado 1500 8 Speed Transmission, 7775 Miles on it. My Torque Converter has been slipping at 25 mph and again 52 mph. I Just had the Transmission Flushed with over 20 Qts. of new fluid by a GMC Dealership, under the Drive Train Warranty. I have been noticing the Rear End clunk when Slowing to a Stop. This has been going on for a couple of years, but now I am more aware of the Clunk. Torque Converter seems better now, but I plan on going back to the GMC dealership and asking them to Service the Clunk. Hopefully they will have a TSB on this and do same as you have do here. On the Torque Converter Service, I went to my Chevrolet Service Department, they were going to do the same flush, BUT CHARGE me $600.00 to $800.00 for the job. It just so happens that we know a the Service Manager at the GMC Dealership, he checked into this and said the Flush was part of the Drive Train Warranty. Hope all this works for the Clunk, man it's ugly at times.

Can you also use wheel bearing greese for this too? I have a 2000 silverado and it seems likes ever since I did 3" coil spacers up front and 2.5" blocks in the rear I have had this slip going on. Searched forever on it and this is the 1st video that I found helpful! Could a small lift like mine cause the no sound clunking, I just feel it.
@davelowe1963
@davelowe1963 Год назад
Not sure if wheel bearing grease is thick enough to stay on splines for an extended period. Might work. The lift can put a bind on u-joints and could be part of the problem. Not sure what the solution would be, but lubing the splines may help especially if they are dry now. Good luck!

My 07 tundra 4.7L has a slight bump instantly when i left off the brakes from a complete stop and I’m thinking it’s the slip yoke. I also have a very mild vibration between 50-70 mph, i thought it was my cheap tires but since it’s doesn’t happen every time im thinking it’s related to the slip yoke being dry. Going to try to grease it first.

Great video my man! I have a 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe AWD and when i come to a stop i get this creaking/clunk/thud sensation. Only when i stop. This most likely the culprit. Question: do you notice the clunking when you try and twist the driveshaft with your hands? Or is it only when in motion? Thanks!!
@davelowe1963
@davelowe1963 5 дней назад
The symptoms I had that was the cause for this repair, was that I would feel the clunk kind of under my seat, only when stopping or accelerating. If you can feel it just by twisting the driveshaft, it may be a u-joint, Pinion gear or rear differential problem. This video really addresses the fact that the drive shaft slip yoke sticks because of lack of lubrication. Hope this help! Thanks for the comment!

@davelowe1963

Sounds exactly like the issue I was having. Also, check your u-joints. They can cause the same symptoms if one of them is bad. The other common problem with these vehicles is the rear differential. The pinion gear or internal carrier bearing wears and will also make a clunking noise when going between drive and reverse. Good luck. Hope this helps!

@davelowe1963

Or sorry actually the grease will ruin the transfer case. Supposedly you’re supposed to use transfluid on the splines for 4x4s. But I still don’t understand…
@davelowe1963
@davelowe1963 Год назад
Sounds like your noise could be something else since you hear it every time you shift. Maybe U-joints? Also, there is a bushing/seal inside the transfer case (not to be confused with the tail piece seal) that keeps transfer case fluid from leaking into the output shaft splines. The tail piece seal is to keep dirt and debris out of the splines. If you are leaking fluid out of the tail seal, then the inner Bushing may be failing. Anyway, do what you think is best for you as to wether you grease the shaft splines or not. Good luck and thanks for the comments.
