GMC trucks also had unique V6 and V8 engines. Many know of the 305 V6, less people know of the 351 V6 available thru '67, and almost nobody knows about the 478ci V6 for BIG trucks, the 634ci V8, or the bonkers 702 V-12 (1960-66). Early 50s GMCs had the 302 I-6, popular with hot rodders, but also a 505ci I-6, and a monster 707 I-6. For guys that didn't want a 6-71 Jimmy diesel, I guess.

Okay, I knew about the 351 and 478 V6s, the 634 V8, and the 702 V12. But a 505 and 707 I-6? Holy shit that's some big ass pistons in those things.

305/351/379/401/432/478 V6s yes they had 6 of them and a 637 V8 and a 702 V12... They had 2 strokes a 3.58 and 3.86 for this engine family which ran 1960-74.. they Gould have made more engines by switching cranks which they did for the 379/432 engine's. The 379 is a 351 with the 3.86 crank and the 432 is a 401 with the 3.85 crank.. they how ever could have put the 3.86 crank in the 305 and got a 327, and destroked the 478 for another V6... However pointless as it's truck engine.. the 702 uses the same bore/stroke as the 351 so they could have upped the stroke from 3.58 to 3.86 and had an even bigger V-12. The 637 in think had the 3.86 stroke so one could have destroked it that and made another V8 again probably point less also being a truck engine.. ok I've rambled on enough😂enjoy my friends😎

@@DeathHead1358 And very long strokes. I don't know the numbers, but I would guess over 5 inches. Very undersquare, low revving engines. The factory redline for the 702 V12 was only 2800. The 634 V8 was also available as a diesel! Same block, crank, and rods, but the pistons and top end had to be different. The gas version was green, the diesel yellow, if I remember right.

Really coming up with an LS based V-10 isn't that much of a stretch. The castings for the block and heads aren't that big of a deal. I would think Chevrolet's engineering shops have the machining capacity to turn out billet cam and cranks. Rods and pistons right out of the parts bin.

9:48 so I knew about their rotary corvette project and it being 4 rotor. However I was very, very unaware how big that 4 rotor engine was. 9.6 LITERS?!?! THATS LITERALLY A BIG BLOCK ROTARY! Boy would I love to have the blueprints to that engine, my dad has a CNC machine, he could definitely make these if he had the plans for them. The blueprints for the ls v10 and v16 would also be nice

I knew about the 4 rotor rotary in the Vette of course. It would not surprise me if Chevrolet along with the rest of the Divisions had all kinds of test engines in the past. Pontiac and Olds worked on some pretty wild stuff in the 60s and 70s. Olds had the 455 with OHV and DOHC 4 valve heads. Poncho also had lot if OHC stuff.

2023 C8 Z06 is very close to being just a NA version of the cerV from years ago. Its almost crazy to think that over the course of a few decades, GM would introduce project Zora to the world, and follow up that achievement with a DOHC trivalve dual throttle body, LT variant for the C8

summer of 2005 (i think) i was an engineering student and in Detroit for the Formula SAE competition. we got a tour of GM's engine plant (Romulus? i can't remember) the took us through the specialty build and tear down areas ( i recall lots of warranty I5s from the colorado) the tour went on and we got to the special build area and dynos. there was a table full of shtuff and one of the items i saw was an electronic throttle labeled 'v10' in silver sharpie. i asked the tour guide about it, and that was the end of the tour.

On the turbo rocket, it really was an innovative idea to even consider sticking a turbo in a car in the 60s. Before turbos started to become common in cars, long, long after the 60s, the main thing anyone would have known turbochargers for is for application in high-altitude piston-engined aircraft, notably combat aircraft such as the P-38, P-47, and B-29. Once you start getting above about 5,000 yards, any NA engine will start to struggle badly no matter how you tune it, so in order to get aircraft that worked well even higher (up to around 9kyd) it was necessary to resort to forced induction. Which gives an interesting historical reference, that most turbocharged engines prior to that were 1200-3000hp V-12s and radials destined for use in air combat. Takes some creativity to realize the benefits the setup could give a car if used right.

The first tubocharched car was actually prototyped in the 20s iirc. I think it was metallurgy that delayed the widespread use of turbos. In terms of high altitude aviation most engine manufacturers opted for two speed two stage superchargers

The Chevy Corvair had a turbo available on its '62 Monza Spyder. The "rocket-juice" might've allowed it to be tweaked a little higher, but it wasn't stock with the 'juice', like the Olds.

My favorite is the rotary concept that was going to be put into the Vega. Reason why it didn’t make it is because the overhead cam 4 cylinder (also unique) got better gas mileage. The gm rotary was reliable up past 500,000 miles too which is crazy looking at Mazdas 12a,13b etc

GM has certified scrappers that they send their used-up prototypes to. If those prototypes end up in the hands of 3rd parties, the scrappers can get in big trouble with The General.

The v16 in the Yukon was probably just an easier way to work out the tuning on the motor While a different division worked out the body, and chassis for the concept car to keep a schedule.

Don't forget the turbo Corvairs or the Cosworth Vegas. About the same time the turbo Olds came out, they did pretty much the same thing to Buick Skylarks and about 500 Pontiac Bonneville's were offered with fuel injection in 1958 (?).

Yeah, the biggest issue with the Oldmobile turbo engines was ultimately caused by bean counters. It was cheaper to use an anti-detonation injection than it was to make lower compression pistons for only one model.

V16 in the Yukon isn't unknown or hard to find the answer why. It was for testing the engine before use in the Cadillac 16 concept. Pretty well known and it's even stated in the articles on the Cadillac 16 concept that this was how they tested it.

The government went after Pontiac, because it was GM sports division. Fuel economy was and still is a big topic. Buick is a stepping stone into luxury, just under Cadillac. Plus Buick is supposedly a big money maker in China. I dont understand why we have GMC and Chevrolet? Both overlapping vehicles. I honestly wish the 5 major divisions had still existed today. Chevy, Olds, Pontiac, Buick and Cadillac. Too many overlapping cars tho. Each division needs to specialize in something and stick with it. Just my 2 cents.

Oldsmobile Jetfire? My first car, a '66 Olds F-85, had a "Jetfire" graphic on the air-filter housing, which topped a 2-barrel carb for its 330-cubic-inch small-block V-8. It certainly didn't have a turbocharger. Looking back, it was the second-largest-displacement engine in the vehicles I've owned. It falls between the O-320 (320ci) engine in my Piper Tri-Pacer airplane and the 5.7-liter (350ci) LS-1 in my 2001 Corvette.

The V10 was to have a V10, ford and dodge had them but the viper used a V10 and the corvette didnt. There is a corvette (c4) that has a V12 but i cant remember much off the top of my head (i may even miss remember that V12 timeline right now) but the Zr2 was also rumored to try and make a comeback. The ZR2 was last used on the C3 (that iam aware of not sure about C6 C7 or even the C8 as a package or anything like that) and all it ment was the big block was installed. For the C4 it was supposed to be a kit from chevy to shoehorn a bigblock in a C4 and the just rumors fornthe C5.

That engine was used in the aftermarket Spyder. And wasn't it Crosley who offered an aftermarket DOHC kit for G.M.small blocks. Some hot rodders started building 454 small blocks out of G.M. 400s. I owned a 1855 Hudson Hornet with a 413 dual turbo. The front end of the Ferrari looked like a 55-57 T-bird.

I think the rotary was cool but my memory about those engines in that era is that there is a reason they weren’t wide spread production their design was not ready for production because they were still plagued by the many issues that took 30-40 years of engineering to “somewhat” sort out.

People may not think of this engine as unique because so many were made, but the Corvair, air cooled, flat 6 was extremely unique, especially for American cars. This engine wasn't GM or American, but the 3 cylinder, opposed piston, 2 stroke Commer "knocker" diesel from the UK was pretty unique as well.

Wouldn't mind learning more about the corvair flat 6. Just saw one on VGG the other day for the first time. Found it very interesting. It's air cooled design reminded me a lot of a Porsche motor. Remind you I know very little about these - hence saying I'd like to know more.

The best part is they were real and that means someone got to drive them. Unfortunately manufacturers tended to destroy prototypes and show cars. They should have been required to save them. These guys were probably a bunch of engineers.

It was rumored that the Monte Carlo was o get a V12 back in the 70’s, but the EPA stopped them. A V16 today with all the computer aided control systems makes sense, but not in a small truck.

The Jetfire was a pretty cool car. It’s too bad people didn’t want to bother with the “Rocket Fluid”. GM eventually offered to take the turbo off for free and a lot of people took advantage of that offer. There aren’t many left in original condition. Of course Jay Leno has one.

The block utilizes a 4.00-inch bore which is shared with the LS2, LQ4, LQ9, LY6, L76 and 4.00-inch stroke found in the LS7. This puts displacement with 10 cylinders around 455 cubic-inches (7.5-liters).The pistons have reliefs cut in them similar to the OEM design of the LS2, and the shop estimates that the engine should have a compression ratio between 9.8-10.2:1. The crankshaft uses the LSA/CTS-V 8-bolt flex-plate.

I know of a group of engine development engineers at GM back when the 3.8L V6 was in development. This particular V6 had "free valve" technology of some type which could be controlled from inside the vehicle cabin. So four of the engineers jammed themselves into the test vehicle around all the data gathering equipment also in the cabin. It was time to try out some of the extreme engine performance operations which is why the car was loaded with "I want to be there" engineers. What they did was get going about 20MPH (not certain of the MPH value) and floor the throttle and flip the engine into performance two stroke mode. This resulted in complete loss of directional control with the car looping. Now this is a front wheel drive mind you. Data analysis showed that 3.8L engine produced over 700HP in performance two stroke mode. No wonder it spun out! LMFAO!

I’ve got some old car trend and motorcraft from late 60’s mid seventies. They would not shut up about the “wankel” engines coming the scene and the wankel corvette. Then BAM emissions & fuel mileage strangle the wankel almost dead full stop. One year 1/4 of magazine is Wankel content and the next year there’s nothing mentioning rotaries at all. I mean dang, cause that four rotor corvette was real and real powerful. Sick vid.

I saw an LS V10 at Katech in 2004. They told me it was a 7.5L. I assumed it was a 6.0L with 2 more cylinders and was intended to replace the big block in trucks. It would have had great economies of scale for manufacturing, by having so many common components with the LS series. The displacement of the GM Rotary Engine 2-rotor was 206 cubic inches. The 4-rotor would have been 412, or about 6.9 liters. Where do you get this 9.6 liter stuff?

You don't suppose the V-10 was inspired by the Viper--- The "mystery motor", like the 427 Ford, was really great for about a year. Btu then there came the 426 Hemi and it was all over. We had the opportunity to compare a Northstar in a DeVille to a 350 in a Buick Roadmaster for a couple of years. The magic Northstar 4 valve twin cam wonder always used more fuel than the 350 and provided similar performance. Sort of made my respect for the small block increase considerably.

One that I would have put on this list is the Corvair turbocharged engine. While it was a production engine, so was the Olds Jetfire. the Corvair was using an air cooled flat 6 five years before the 911 came out, and the turbocharged version, first offered in 1962, was 13 years ahead of the Porsche 930 911 Turbo. Sure the 911 is better than the Corvair, the fact that GM was building a rear engine, air cooled, turbocharged flat 6 in1962 could only be surpassed in craziness if they had built that 4-rotor engine

So my thinking as to why they shoved that v16 into that Yukon was simply just because somebody got stoned and was like we should take an older Yukon and shove a v16 into it and just send it.
