Ah another old beat-up modded Chevy! This one had a low-power complaint, but turns out to be a complete no-start. Let's see if we can sort through the variables and get this beast fired up! Enjoy!
Yo Ivan! Man I thought I worked on some real toilets but wow this thing is a real cream puff... Looks like you may not have been the first guy to touch this old girl. She has been tickled from her tail pipes to her timing cover from the looks of it! I think it is fantastic that faulty fuel pressure gauge reading led you to the right direction haha! Perfect! That is like having a blown bulb in a test light and still finding the open :) Any how good luck and can't wait to see part II as you tackle the classic "distributor dilemma" P1345.
+South Main Auto Repair Hey Eric, the whole time I was working on this beaut, your words of wisdom "this isn't her first rodeo" kept running through my head LOL Oh yeah couldn't believe the pressure gauge crapping out like that and still being spot on... Seems like someone already tried to man-handle that schrader valve before I got to it. Ridiculous. XD
Oh Man, Ivan. I almost lost faith in you. I'm glad you decided to add gasoline to it. You wouldn't believe how many times I have seen that over the years.
Wow! I once had a customer complain that their low fuel light stop working after fuel pump replacement, turns out that year & model never came with one. Good job Ivan, least expensive first Gas+labour.
Nice thought process Ivan. I won't say anything about the truck's condition as it looks like from the comments that it's pretty well covered. Not a biggie, but in the beginning the fuel gauge was pegged beyond full, but after you added the fuel, it swung back to probably a good reading, showing just above empty. Looks like you fixed another problem LOL...looking forward to the crank correlation issue and have a good one!
+stuzman52 Oh yeah this was a real gem haha! I can't believe the "fix" was that simple, but we all still learned something so it was worthwhile. Thanks for the comment, Terry!
Diagnostic Dog FTW :) Love your vids m8, first saw you on Eric O's channel ... you two are my favourite car guys on youtube because of your excellent diagnostic skills, honesty and integrity. Keep doing the amazing stuff you do, hope more people discover your great GENUINE car diag + repair vids :) ( ETCG has been binned!)
Ok, let's see how good my guessing game is getting watching you and Eric. At 2:28 I'd say, seeing as the petrol gauge is reading infinity, the crank/no start is due to it being plum out of gas and the A/T codes are due to an ECU/wiring harness from an automatic model having been swapped in at some point. This would also explain the extra wiring under the hood. Edit: wait, just thought of a more likely scenario... this truck used to be an automatic and had a manual transmission put in. As Eric O. would say: 'Ya big dummy!!' ;-)
Could you have used a scope on a rope hooked to battery pos. and touch the module to try to trigger it to spark like the pickup would have :) great show !
+STEVE ROB was just about to type that "Reformatting required", until I read your comment, still, to ensure really permanent add match and petrol, should finish it off :)
Awesome Ivan, hey when you going to get some transducers to read fuel pressure and other oils? I use the transducer I have to look at Cummins Low pressure gear pumps and lift pumps. They work great to identify pressure/volume issues.
+motoYam82 Just hook it up and either power brake it or do a test drive at full throttle. I use another channel on my scope to use as a reference when I go to full throttle, that way you know when you have maximum pressure demand. So on your Verus, bear with me, used to use a Modis and I'm thinking what would be the best screen time to do the test drive. I'm thinking do 5ms a division and then you should have a pretty decent buffer of data to look at.
+busjockey1 I'd be afraid to floor that thing. the body might come off the frame or the engine might blow up. then you would have to explain that to the customer.
The ole AC compressor bypass pulley. Looks like they called you after they worked on it, did some swaptronics (PCM) and couldn't figure it out...gotta love those but you'll figure it out. Maybe it's just a distributor gear...something quick & easy. Looks like a typical 18 yr old Northern truck. Patch up the floor, make sure the heater/defroster works, stick a plow on it and use it for a winter $$ maker.
One client who doesn't change her oil to this guy who doesn't check his gas. Wow. Can't wait to see what else this thing needs beside lifting the radiator up and sliding a new truck under it.
+wyattoneable Wouldn't be surprised if it needed a new radiator too...there was a substantial coolant leak somewhere on the engine but the shop told me the customer "declined repairs" :P
i have seen you use an autel maxidas,,,where did you buy it? i have heard there are alot of fake clone autel's out there!...no support from autel on the fakes....damn you can buy the autel at harbor frieght!!! really seems like a sweet scanner.... heard the autel will do ford PATS key relearn
Diagnostic dog? I've used a diagnostic cat before. I calibrated it with my wife's Neon(before we got rid of it), he tried to bury the turd so I'm sure the instrument was accurate.
Ivan, congratulations!!! I thought it was impossible for a RU-vid mechanic to work on a bigger piece of shit than Eric the Car Guy typically does, clearly, I was mistaken. I lived in Pittsburgh for 41 years (prior to making a break for it and escaping from that dump) and I can't believe this thing can get an inspection sticker. PA does not like holes in the body panels. This thing is Swiss cheese. Dude you need to vacation out here in Arizona some time and see what the other side of the country has to offer.
HA HA HA ! Hey did the two sensors on my truck not sure if its fixed did not do its bit all the time with the ABS, But lets see if it comes back dont think so thank for your help anyway ivan.
Some of you think its great that there are shops out there that will put a sticker on a piece of shit, let me tell you its not. It is very dangerous!! I live on the west side of the state from Ivan and About 15 years ago there was this shop that put a sticker on a piece of shit just like that truck and the owner of the truck was going up a busy road and the door came open and his 6 year old son fell out of the truck doing 55 mph and then was run over by a semi truck!! He was probably killed when he hit the pavement. The god damn doors were held shut with bungie cords!! not to mention all of the other problems with it We have state safety inspections for a reason It is to keep junk like this truck from being on the roads
+Kent Taylor Eric O seems a bit tense lately..... But his therapeutic formatting procedures seem to be helping him a lot.... I could have told him that years ago......it works for me too.
I think you said it was a 95 which means it probably had a 5.7L with TBI. That looked like a Vortec MPI. Looks like it has the harness and ECU from an automatic? Just my 2 cents.
lol, poor feller probably gets 9mpg and can't afford to keep her running, lol. I had a gaser V10 Dodge got what seemed like 5mpg. Those trucks are fucking nasty when it comes to fuel economy, especially now that the gas is skyrocketing back. Used to be 1.40 few months ago now 2.20 again. Very bad considering how big rigs get 8mpg
It's possible it may not be the belt.. I had a Camaro that would squeak like that after I would turn it on, then it would go away.. one day I turn it on and smoke starts coming up from the hood, turned the car off. Pop the hood, smoke was coming from A/C area.. try to crank engine over and it won't budge. Turns out it was the bearing in the A/C compressor, warning me it was gonna die and then it seized up.
+STEVE ROB Hahaha while you're at it Steve send me your LoadPro for a pro tool review :) Also throw in one of those clip-on camera mounts if you want to see some more under-the-hood wrenching since I don't have a camera man LOL
Pretty sure someone needs to lose there PA Safety Insp. license. Those floors=FAIL. What a piece of crap. I hope its a woods truck that is all it would be good for. That BELT SQUEAL!!!!
