I’m glad you put this out there. The wife and I have been looking at fifth wheel campers and I wanted one of these and I saw that video. The sales people want to sell you the more expensive 3500
Wow what an amazing set up for camping, starting I’d course with that rig which is perfect for the mission, and the way you loaded the SxS in the back, the trailer and all, just amazing man.
Thanks Chris for posting. I thought you disappeared also. I saw that video you were talking about and I think what he was getting at was because of the smaller turbo and horsepower rating of the engine, you can't get the towing capacity you can with the higher horsepower trucks. I ordered a 5500HD back in April and hope to get it this fall. I want mine to haul my truck camper. With the setup I have now, I am 2,000 LBS over weight. Thank you for posting from time to time about your truck. I have learned a lot.
That smaller horse that looked maybe dunn colored was sure cute as a button. Mules down there also. If I was 30 years younger I would love to gentle that little one for your wife to have, now days don't think I could do it. The truck is a work horse not a race horse. See I used the horse theme you had going!. lol.. Nice looking rig and a beautiful place to go camping. Been too many years since we went to Tennessee or Kentucky. Stay safe and healthy.
They should make the 1ton with the tilt hood. I like the medium duty accessibility for engine maintenance. Also like the HD of it! ( Just way more than I need). What really scares me is ever needing a tow. Medium duty is where they won't tow with a regular tow truck,(even though it can ) insisting on needing there "big boy" ,at over 2x $$$$! Also considering srw ,to make it even less of a hassle. I want the bigger truck for safety. Yet not at all the extra expenses. Really nice setup!
Hello Chris iam new on your channel what beautiful day thank you for sharing wonderful moments the horse's very beautiful from Greece with love 🇬🇷💙❤️🇺🇲💐💐 God bless you all
I just bought a 2022 5500 LT CrewCab. My friend has one that has been tuned with upgraded intakes and turbo. dynoed at 560HP / 1150 TQ. Towed my 41’ ATC car hauler no problems
But my brother's neighbor's cousin who works at Walmart said you couldn't tow with those trucks! Lol! Chris, you can fix just about anything, but some things... That looked like an awesome trip. When I was growing up we did a lot of tent camping. One place we visited every year was Moose River Plains in the Adirondack Mountains of NY where the campsites were around a mile apart and they locked the gates at dark so nobody in or out at night. Fresh water came from a hose on the side of a mountain...spring fed from somewhere uphill. No horses, but plenty of black bear.
You can tow 26000 with the 5500 with 350 hp and 700 lb's of torque. The 3500 with 445 and more torque will blow the 5500 away all day long. Bigger number only means more weight that the truck can haul not with a trailer.
Been looking for a crew cab LT 4wd 4500 with a hauler bed myself . Love the truck content. I had a 05 chevy c4500 but sold it now I want the new one ! Lol
Lol I been searching for your channel for months now!!!!! Totally lost track, until I saw a notification right now lol, I was like _”did he stopped making videos or RU-vid just stopped recommending it”,_ I’m glad to see you
Cool truck ! I really like them & I recognized most of your trip to KY. I've got allot of family history there fathers side from Moorehead KY. looks like You where close to Daniel Boone national forest & those wild horses where pretty funny , Thanks for the video & the ride along 1st video I've seen on RU-vid featuring this series Silverado from a personal owner.
I also have a lot of family on my dad's side in Kentucky around Allen, Prestonsburg, and Pikeville. I appreciate you watching the video. I'll be doing more videos with the truck as well
i thought it looked familiar when you were on the interstate.. when you took your exit i knew i was right.. i am originally from the hazard area.. born in hazard early years in vicco and sassafras.. it is beautiful there .. glad you were able to go enjoy it
Great video!!! I came across your video as I looked at the Silverado 5500 regular cab 4x4 diesel. Very cool set up. I have a bumper pull forest river micro lite 25 foot travel trailer and a kubota x900 side by side. Looking to do this as well. I like the idea about crew cab for more storage. I was looking at the CM or a Knapheide pgnb bed for my build. I thought these trucks could tow and haul too but seeing is believing. Really like the red too, was thinking white again but its just plain like a work truck.
It's really strange that someone would claim on you tube that your truck couldn't and or shouldn't do what you guys were doing with it (I have a feeling I know what channel it is) Your only towing a camper, hauling a side by side and your gear. I really like the set up! This package interests me as these HDs are more readily available and the cost is quite comparable.
Love this setup. Exactly what we are going for. There’s always nay sayers on the internet. We have a 2012 Silverado 3500 dually with the 6.0 gas. I extended the rear frame rails 2 feet and put a 10 foot flatbed on it that’s 8.5 feet wide. Put a maverick trail and a Polaris sportsman next to each other on the flatbed then bumper pull a 7500lb 31’ travel trailer hitched up to a 2 foot long supertruss hitch extension to clear the longer overhang of the flatbed. Everything Weighs out at just over 18,000 lbs loaded. I manage with my little gasser. If this guy out there says your truck can’t do it I couldn’t imagine what he’d say about ours! Looking to upgrade to a 4500 cab and chassis with a 84” CA to eliminated the hitch extension and need for weight distribution.
I just watched a dyno video.it was like just over 200 horse and around 500 torque…super detuned from the pickup that dynoed 400 horse 850 torque.I nearly bought one .looks like a few things can be done to get part of the power difference back
I am in my 70's young...my late Uncle when I was a youngster. Had a 63 Chevy 2wd and hauled an 11 an half ft slid in camper every where. That straight six and manual 4 speed wasn't fast but it could do the job. We lived in the Pacific Northwest. So it was not flatland. I know the channel and saw the posting you are speaking of. He is interesting to say the least. He reviews a lot and he says a lot. But he doesn't spend any time on the road. Uh.. yeah he is questionable... My Uncle probably over loaded his old truck. But it was all he had. He drove...at the limit of the truck and that was the key.
Beautiful truck. I watched a video from BTBRV on the 5500 and the salesman said the truck was not designed to be a heavy 5th wheel/conventional trailer puller, hence the lower GCWR. Instead, he said, the truck has an incredibly high cargo capacity for use as a dump truck or heavy specialized utility vehicle. Sure looks like a good puller to me, other than the lack of an exhaust or Jake brake.
It has an exhaust brake. The video you mentioned is the video I was referring to. As far as pulling it does a fantastic job. When I purchased this truck I had a fifth wheel camper and had no issues and when I say no issues the fifth wheel camper was 32 feet and behind the fifth wheel I pulled a 16 foot bumper pull flatbed loaded with 100 gallons of fresh water, a 1800 pound industrial generator, and my polaris ranger. This truck has no issues at all for towing in my eyes lol. Thanks for watching the video
@@chrisward405 I seen the same video and told myself no way you can't pull a heavy 5th wheel rv, If you think about it the 3500 dually loaded up is 15-20k more then a 5500 all day... This would be my choice all day, the other thing the salesman said was the the 5500 diesel was derated on hp/tq compared to the 3500, that's the only reason he would say that or get a higher sales commission off the 3500?
@@tyflesh I'd say he wanted the sales on the 3500. I see many of the medium duty Chevy and international cv trucks hauling heavy loads on gooseneck trailers throughout my travels. I believe we'll see a lot more of them in the years to come
I'm a truck driver I also see many of these setup for horses and live stock with most in 5th wheel configuration... I remember some years back there was a special conversion you could get specific for camper tow...
I was thrilled to see this video, this is exactly what I was thinking about doing with a 5th wheel or I've seen one with a gooseneck hitch. Which frees up the truck bed. I'm not a tech guy and need to learn about payload vs max towing and 16000 vs 36000 towing. I see that ram offers a 5500 limited. We do want to see the country and possibly some hotshotting. Spending that much time in the truck, I would like to have the best ride. Thanks for the video. Would you mind giving us a ballpark idea on the price
It's not that the truck isn't physically capable, it's the combined max weight between the truck and trailer that is legally limiting. Even if you're under weight, it's the potential.
I think I saw the video you’re talking about. They’re talking about the gcwr which in a commercial application is the most that truck with a trailer and load can weigh. It’s not about if the truck can do it, it’s about if the government will let you do it. If a hotshotter got this truck and loaded it up with 40k dot would through the book at them.
You can scale these trucks out to almost 40k combination weight now. I see these trucks hauling auto's all the time. As far as DOT goes the look at the gvw of the power unit and the gvw of the trailer. They add those 2 numbers together and that's what the max weight you can haul. The gcwr is a factory recommendation weight. That's why you'll see 1 ton trucks hauling 5 cars at a time.
I’d like to know what the sticker shows for GVWR Most people tow more than they should and it’s not that the vehicle isn’t capable. It’s what it’s rated for. Great looking truck and a great set up You cannot I just saw another video that a dealer Caller showed about how to speck out that type of truck so you can haul and tow
I think you completely misinterpreted the other guy's video. He was hauling a 17k 5th wheel, yours is probably a 8k bumper pull. It was simple math that the fifth wheels weight and the trucks weight exceeded the gross weight. Of course your truck can pull your load and it can probably pull his load but not if you followed the sticker in the door jamb.
Lol😂 first beautiful truck man. But I don't think you pushing weigth. I tow 10.000lbs (24' car trailer with a polaris rzr rs1 and a 1ton buggy cj7 on 40s) with my class c motorhome with the v10 triton. I traveled everywhere from Utah to Washington Oregon Idaho and more getting 9mpg. I never run out of power and the motorhome it self it's heavy. Total weight at the scale was 25.000lbs and some change. I was getting you to get better mpg. My dodge cummins gets 13mpg with 20.0000lbs gooseneck
As you stated, they would not build a truck you can't tow with. The issue with these trucks is the way the factory rates them for weight ratings. look at the tag in the door to see the axle ratings AND the gross combined weight. The problem is (for example), you install a dump bed on the truck, load it with dirt, now the towing capacity is lower. It is not that you can't tow with them, it is what you can tow legally by axle and combined weight. I am looking to tow with one also, you just have to follow the weight rating to do it legally. Do the research on what you want to tow, its tongue weight and total weight.
I'm looking to buy that truck to tow my 38 ft bumper camper and a gulf cart on the bed do you know what the wheel base of your truck is and if your 60 inches from cab to axle or 84 inches from cab to axle because I love the length that you have truck look very sharp thank you
Nice set up. What kind of pump do you use to pump water into your Rv when you run out? What does your set up look like? When we go camping I have three daughters that want to shower every day they are teenagers and when we camp for 3 to 4 days we run out of water right away. Any info would be helpful thank you for posting
I bought the water pump from harbor freight. I think it was around $70. The pump came with a short hose and a filter to go in the tank. I use a white hose from the pump to the camper
@@chrisward405 the specs on the Spicer S130 and S140 rear end with airbags is 40k#'s. I think the truck was heavily de-rated from the factory. Theoretically the trucks GCWR should be at least 40k#'s.
The guy that said that truck can’t do that don’t know what he’s talking bout that truck wasn’t even in a bind with that load. It could pull that trailer and another just like that one
bro thats a 5500 ....that will tow haul pull a lot more then that little weight. put a 43 footer rv behind it with the side by side and show the haters what it can do.
Haven't weighed it with the camper and gear yet. Will more than likely get a weight next year because I still need to purchase the last piece of the puzzle
I want to buy a trailer for 5 cars and help me choose between dodge ram 5500 and silverado 6500 which can drive a heavy trailer so that there are no problems on the scales on the road with the police
@@chrisward405 yes and i like 6500 but according to the documents, it can tow less than a Dodge Rem 5500 and I have to work in a commercial one and is this a problem for the traffic police?
@BoostedFA rides like a log wagon empty. If you get a 2 wheel drive truck you can get factory air ride which will be a great ride empty of loaded. 4x4 option only comes spring ride. My truck doesn't ride smoothly until I have about 5,000 pounds on the bed
@chrisward405 since I do site prep and excavation and snow plowing, the 4wd was the only truck I was considering. I'm like 90% sure I want it, but not sold yet. The truck I'm looking at is a 6500 also.
I came to this video from "that other guy." I'm glad someone is throwing some shade his way. He claims to be an engineer so going on that I know two things about him; he's good at scribbling numbers on paper and he has more money than he knows what to do with. He never impressed me.
@@chrisward405 it just the gcwr that kill this trucks. It's just sad 3500hd or 2500hd can legally tow more. I know you can have the dealer order it with a lower rating but it still sucks for dot towing.
Haha I wouldn't think the 5500 couldn't when the new 2500s could get it done especially without a sxs on the back. Those medium dutys are just rated for a ridiculous payload for dumptruck kinda applications that would blow the tires of a 3500 dually
Agreed. I'm still after the last piece of the puzzle for my setup. I plan on buying a jeep that will go on the bed of the truck. When traveling from place to place it'll be nice to have a smaller vehicle to run around in. The wife and I spent 7 weeks in Wyoming this past year with the 5500 and camper. We almost bought a wrangler out there to cruise around in
@Chris Ward that would be dope, and couldn't you put the sxs inside the toy hauler? Or is that even a toy hauler, I don't know much about all the different campers and shit they got now
@DownHillgamer it's not a toy hauler. We didn't like any of the layouts of the bumper pull toy haulers. We were going for something to live in for several weeks at a time and wanted the best Floorplan for it. We had a 5th wheel before this camper and I used to haul the side x side, generator, and water behind the 5th wheel on a 16 foot trailer. It gave the wife anxiety always thinking about the second trailer behind the camper lol. So that's why I started looking for an option to be able to haul everything on the bed of the truck which ment selling the 5th wheel and buying this truck and a bumper pull camper. While designing this setup we were thinking of what we wanted to do a few years from now and this is what we came up with. We live in Ohio and we eventually want to head south for the winter and having a tow rig that we can take a second vehicle with us as well just makes since... Plus it looks cool going down the road lol
