I owned a 2008 Jayco Seneca class C on the c5500 Kodiak chassis (duramax). These medium duty trucks were a huge compromise between capability and comfort. Compared to a pickup of the same year these beasts suffered from horrendous road noise and the massive cooling fan howl. The front leaf springs made you feel every imperfection on the road. I found myself envious every time I looked down on someone towing a fifth wheel/ travel trailer in their nice smooth and quiet 2500/3500.

Nice looking truck. That’s why I voted for it. I’ve seen one of these with the largest available truck camper mounted on a bed like that with side compartments built up higher on each side which gives you plenty of storage. When you take your camper off you still have a great work truck.

Very nice truck. I like that you can easy swap out the interior for a High Country or LTZ interior from a 2015.5- 2018 and be right at home with all the comforts, heated cooled seats, full center console, heated steering wheel, etc. Also going this route, don't get the airbags but contact Liquid Spring and get a better suited rear suspension with better adjustability, ride quality and reliability of the system.

That DEF tank on the right side is going to piss a lot of people off. Unless you are using jugs to fill it, its on the wrong side for where truck stops put the DEF pumps, which are on the drivers side.
@Harry-zz2oh
@Harry-zz2oh 3 года назад
I looked at a Chevy 3500 a while back. It was powered by the Duramax and the DEF fill tube was under the hood of the truck. Very inconvenient since you almost need a small stepladder to get up to it so you can use the hose. If you are using a jug, you would need the ladder. My wife would never fill it; she's very short (4'11 3/4")
@richardnott9587
@richardnott9587 3 года назад
I like it under the hood. The hose is long enough to put in the hole before dumping it in. Then I just tip it over and let it fill it up and I don't have to carry the 20lb jug again till it's empty. My Ford sucks for that because I have to hold the jug the whole time.

@Bo185
@Bo185 3 года назад
Per a gm engineer at there release of these trucks stated its the Allison trans as to why the GCVW is lower. Meaning if you have a 23k gross truck and 40k trailer rating you’re over what the allison will physically handle. The truck will handle it but kill the transmission so they limit GCVR. . They are designed for higher GVWR as most companies use them for I wish gm or IH would make a 4500/5500 with max tow and limit Gross weight to make the numbers work for towing.

I have a 2019 5500 and I run it hotshot. My combined weight rating is 40k lbs. I could have rated it up to just under 45k but I don't have a reason to go that heavy. The truck has zero issues hauling that weight and I've put 150k on it. GM is just being stupid for some reason because it's more than capable of handing that load. The problem with these trucks is not the truck but GM locking the ECU's down so you can't work on them and they have limited dealerships who are approved to work on the MD trucks. Meaning if you break down it's a 4 week wait to get into a dealership. Also "GM decided that rear shocks are "optional" so you have to special order rear shocks if you want them and yes this truck will beat the hell out of you. If I were to buy another I'd only buy the 6500 with the rear air shocks

I am around horse events where a lot of Freightliners and a few other MD trucks show up. Many of the ones driving those trade back to Ford 550 and Ram 5500 because the stepped up size creates problems for maneuverability. Same for friends with businesses where they have employees driving trucks into neighborhoods and doing construction projects requiring backing close to homes. Ford and Ram have reasons for the scale of their trucks. This truck is likely less a competitor to those trucks as it is to a Hino or Freightliner. International assembles this and sells its twin with badges changed

The truck is a joint venture between GM and International Truck. Duramax engine, GM electronics built on an International chassis. If you are going to buy one consider the International truck folks who know more about built a medium truck spec rather than a car dealer. The truck is available with a 25 gallon, 40 gallon or dual 40/25 fuel tanks and an additional factory fuel tank cannot be added once the truck is built.

Wow, you imagine having to fill DEF on a crowded fuel stop at the bulk pump, whoever decided that have never been on a truck stop for what i can tell, by that fill being in the opposite side? What about putting the thing on driver side or better just put attention while filling the truck, I normally dont coment stuff like this but aeems like they need to hire smarter people to fill this trucks and also to design them, and have people that actually use the vehicles instead of a person that only sits behind a desk

@markdavidcasino4876 I have 40k on it. Had a fuel go out twice first one under warranty and the 2nd one they didn't want to warranty but they found the tank vent hose was plugged with gravel dust, *I drive along of gravel as a beekeeper* but they ended up covering it since that's no where stated as a maintenance point. Anyway the truck I have is the longest wheel base possible at 235" 120" CA 15' flatbed Ford and dodge don't offer a 120 in a crew cab. That layout is the only way I'd recommend the Chevy. However, if you are looking at the 12 flatbed' crew cab size trucks. I would 100% pick the f4-550 due to the ride and by far far, the turning radius. Any other questions just reply here.

@@beeguy2127 awesome! And only had problems with fuelp pump? What were the symptoms when they went out? What mileage did they go out? How long did Chevy diagnose the problem to having it fixed for you both times?
@beeguy2127
@beeguy2127 11 месяцев назад
@markdavidcasino4876 they did an under warranty rebuild on the front axle. It always kinda had a little whine when it was locked in, did since it was new so I didn't care much since it still functions. Just when it was in for the fuel pump I told them about it. As far as symptoms of the fuel pump, I kinda determined that myself, grew up in mechanics/diy everything . Would sputter and stall once in a while. Tank cap would suck air in when I opened it and it was under half full. Changed fuel filters still no avail. Both times I got free towing from gm roadside, one on the hwy, one at my farm. Between the engine codes and the tank being sucked in, diagnosis on their end and fixing was relatively quick. 3-4 days since it wasn't anything too odd.
@beeguy2127
@beeguy2127 11 месяцев назад
@markdavidcasino4876 one at about 28k and the other about 35k mainly since I don't drive it much in the winter and kept it full, the vent tube wasn't much issue with intermittent use. Summer time and burning full tanks quite often I think stressed the fuel pump due to the vacuum it was pulling since the ta k wasn't breathing.

I personally have never considered buying a Chevy truck but that hood configuration is a huge selling point for me. I can only dream of having that kind of access to my engine compartment with my RAM 2500. I think these truck manufacturers underestimate the value of ease of maintenance especially since owners of these trucks tend to maintain them themselves whenever possible. If you make a truck easier to work on, it will help breed brand loyalty.

Yeah but what if you are looking at putting a truck camper on it like an Eagle Cap 1165 / 1200 or a Lance 1172 ? Most 350/3500’s have to have upgraded suspensions in order to accommodate the payload for those larger truck campers. That’s where these trucks shine I think in the RV community.

I dont realistically see someone buying this just to tow an RV unless they have the means to leave it as a dedicated tow vehicle. Driving that thing unloaded is just to awkward & rough riding. I think any dually pickup truck is more than enough and is alright for driving empty

It's my understanding they de-tune a cab and chassis truck to prevent them from breaking from the hauling. Kinda like how you can't break a 7.3 powerstroke. They just didn't make enough power to break themselves. They just keep pulling

I bought a crew cab long box3500hd dually 4wd. Wife asked why so big. I told dogs, luggage and I cannot tell her the trailer she wants is too big.

The F550 high capacity trailer tow package increases gcw from 32k to 40k. You should go look at the fords.

4inch Lift, shorten it add a third axle, bigger and wider tires, add winch in front and rear... it may be the ultimate Overlanding rig
