Chevy Astro CPI Fuel Injector Install Part 1

The leaking fuel pressure regulator on my Chevy Astro needed to be replaced. My van has 175k miles on the odometer and I thought it would be best to replace the injector and regulator as a unit. The regulator kit alone cost is around $100.00, and the unit with the injector and regulator comes in at around $200.00. The fuel line kit (aka nut kit) should cost around another $61.00. 90% of the work is done form the inside of the van. Sorry for the bad lighting.

GB REMANUFACTURING"mail your injector out" Part # 83322101 $147.29 or STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # FJ226R $209.79 both with the core charge.(injector with regulator) DORMAN Part # 55163 $31.79. (line kit)

Just FYI the injector unit from US auto parts remanufactured by GB (same as yours) is $123.76 and the fuel line kit is $41.25. with tax it's about the same as what you paid a few years ago.

@sebaelcordobe83 Check your fuel pump relay, and injector harness. If your van just called it quits with little or no notice, you may have a electrical issue. I don't think that all you your injectors would clogged at once, but one at a time over a period of time could and does happen. More than two clogged injectors at a time would make the van very hard to drive if you could get it running.

My 2005 Astro Cargo van, 39,000 miles on it. Was running it in driveway it was running fine, and suddenly it just quit running. It starts with starting fluid, until it burns it up then it quits again. I here pump prime run for 3-5 seconds, so it seems to run pump prime, still no start.

The first symptom was the smell of raw fuel out of the tail pipe after the van rested for a while. (like six or more hours) The next indication was the engine loading up or chugging under acceleration after setting overnight.

94 AWD with cpi injection. Unless someone put a carb on your van, you should have cpi or throttle body fuel injection.

thanks! ha and now there is a leak in one of the aluminum transmission lines running from my radiator, and im losing a lot of coolant but cannot seem to find where from... not good lol

local701 well i checked the fuel pump like u said..the clamps from pump to sending unit did in fact have medal clamps on it already..the pump looks very old,all rusted and corrosion all over it..so it wasnt leaking from any plastic clamps like we thought.so i cleaned the pump up real good,and put it back in,its still bogging like crazy.u cant even drive it its so bad.pops and sputters like crazy..but yet it idles fine..i don't get it..the pump goes on and i can hear it humming Everytime i turn the key on..do u aqua q)have any idea what else it could be? No smoke or anything coming out of the exhaust ...it starts right up and idles fine ..but as soon as u press the gas pedal it wants to stall and boggs down...BUT,WHAT I DID NOTICE,IS THAT IF I PRESS THE GAS PEDAL VERY VERY SLOWLY IT'LL REV UP AND LET ME RAISE THE RPM AS HIGH AS I WANT..ONLY WHEN I PRESS THE PEDAL VERY SLOWLY AND LET IT CLIMB..DO U THINK IT CAN BE A CLOGGED CAT? BECAUSE IT DID HAVE A BAD SPIDER PRIOR TO ME BUYING IT,SO IT WAS RUNNING VERY RICH BECAUSE ALL THAT EXTRA FUEL WASN'T BEING BURNED..WHAT DO U THINK?? SHOULD I CUT THE CAT OUT? AND OR STILL CHANGE THE FUEL PUMP? JUST DON'T WANNA BLOW MORE MONEY THEN I HAVE TOO..IVE ALREADY DUMPED WELL OVER 1,000$ INTO IT..JUST ON SENSORS,WIRES,VAC LINES,IAC,TPS,THE SPIDER,GASGET,PLUGS,NEW STARTER ,NEW DISTRIBUTOR ETC...NOW A FUEL PUMP IS 300$..IVE BEEN MESSING WITH THIS VAN FOR OVER 6 MONTHS NOW,AND STILL CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT..EVERYONE KEEPS TELLING ME ITS A DIFFERENT PART.THEN WHEN I GO OUT AND BUY THE PART AND PUT IT IN,ITS STILL BOGGING AND WANTS TO STALL,ONLY WHEN I TOUCH THE GAS PEDAL THOUGH..ANY IDEAS?? ID LITERALLY SEND U MONEY IF U CAN HELP ME FIGURE THIS OUT..2 SHOPS AROUND HERE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT A FUEL LEAK DOWN TEST WAS,THEY LOOKED AT ME LIKE I WAS CRAZY...THIS IS WHAT IM DEALING WITH IN CONNECTICUT HAHAHA!! 😀 ITS CRAZY!! David Maher Still need to check fuel pressure at the fuel rail. As you rev the engine the fuel pressure should hold steady above 55 psi. The fuel pressure tester is at the zone.Part Number: CP7817 $50.00. The tool is will tell you if there is a fuel delivery problem. A must have in any toolbox.

local701​​ok thanks so much..im definitely going to the zone tomorrow morning and im gonna get that fuel pressure regulator.now my question to u is: Lets say i put it on and it DOES HOLD FUEL PRESSURE,THEN WHAT SHOULD I CHECK?? and if it DONT HOLD PRESSURE,THEN ITS OBVIOUSLY THE PUMP RIGHT??

local701​honestly,i think im just gonna have to break down and get the new pump anyways..im just so tired of dumping $$$$ into it..seems like Everytime i put a new part it doesn't fix it..but my gut been telling me all along that it's the pump..especially after i pulled it out the other day..it was so old and so rusty..lines are kinda bent and all corroded..looked bad..gotta be the pump..gonna order one online tonight i think...gonna have to eventually anyway so i might as well..

David Maher It's obvious the van is running lean so it has to be a fuel issue. The tester will at least let you know that the fuel system is good to go up to the fuel rail. Now if the pressure holds at the rail it has to be the injector malfunctioning. If it does not hold pressure you will have to back track everything and eliminate fuel filter,sending unit, and finally the pump. Use a AC Delco pump if you change it. The sixty dollar pumps from the local parts stores are only good for 60k or so, and don't like low fuel levels in the tank.

local701​ok..thanks.i really appreciate ur info..like i said before,i've been messing with this thing for about 6 months now,and its just been part after part..i actually just put a brand-new fuel filter in last week and it still continued to bogg and sputters when i press the gas pedal..so i LITERALLY just got done ordering the new ac delco pump 5 minutes before u just told me to make sure i get a ac delco..lol..it was expensive,but i hear their the best.so that's what i got..i also got the over night shipping so it'll be here tomorrow..hopefully this is the problem.im still gonna stop and get the fuel pressure gadge and check the pressure before and after i put the new pump in..just to see what its doing..because like u said,that's the most accurate way to find out what's going on..so ill let u know sometime tomorrow how i make out! Thanks for the help..really really appreciate u taking the time out to answer my questions and help me out..thanks 😎

Put the front end up on ramps, get a creeper, get under it and I think you can reach them all, if not, you have to remove the doghouse to get the rear ones, not much fun at all.

Hi just saw your video , I just wanna ask I have a 1994 s10 blazer with the same engine cranks but won't start , I have spark and fuel ,I just replace cap rotor plugs wires , injection module . Can you give and Idea what could be? Thanks.

Do you have 55 psi of fuel? If not the injector will not open. Test it with some starter fluid down the throttle body. If it fires up it's a pressure problem.

Fuel line pressure should hold constant once you turn the key to the on position. 55 psi + for more than 90 seconds is healthy. If it drops quicker than that there could be a leak at the fuel pump connection inside the tank.

local701 well,i spent the whole day messing with this thing.lol..i still can't figure out what's up with it..prior to checking the fuel pressure on the rail,i had just put in a brand-new spider and regulator as a unit..not rebuilt,but BRAND-NEW,ALSO A NEW GASGET,PLUGS,WIRES,CAP AND ROTOR.SO EVERYTHING FROM THE FUEL RAIL FORWARD IS ALL BRAND-NEW..SOMEONE SAID SOMETHING TO ME ABOUT A KNOCK SENSOR MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WIT IT..HAVE NO CLUE WHAT OR WHERE THAT IS...ANY IDEA ON WHAT THIS would have to do with my van bogging down when i press the gas pedal? Do u think that would cause it to stall and run like crap?

I need to do this on my moms 1995 GMC safari it needs the same thing replaced but the down said is we are stuck living in the van now going on a month now and I don't have any money and tools to replace that

You may be able to find a good used replacement at a pick n pull junkyard. Most 4.3s of this vintage should have had the injector replaced by now.

local701 well i put the brand-new pump in..its a ac delco.the van hasn't changed one bit..still starts and idols fine,but the second i touch the gas pedal it wants to bog down and wants to stall..i have no clue what it could be.i even put a fuel gadge on it,the fuel pressure is right at 65 psi..and stays there.doesn't drop down at all..i can rev it,it stays..i can let it idol,it stays the same.i can shut it off and watch it,it stays the same..i cant figure out what the hell it can be..any thing else u think i can take a look at?

David Maher The pressure staying constant means everything from the fuel rail back is good. Now you have to focus on what is in front of the fuel rail. The fuel injection.

If you pull the fuel relay and try to start the vehicle at least twice it won't leak that much fuel..

what year is this van? i have a 92 and im trying to figure out if mines fuel injected or carb. im a different kind of mechanic so im learning... and extremely confused if its car im gonna convert it to inject

do you have a fuel pump in the tank? can you hear it run when you just turn on the key and listen? if so then it's fuel injected. The fuel injected 4.3's would have 2 fuel lines with a schrader valve in it coming up behind the throttle body on the drivers side if you take the engine cover off.

local701 hey bud,love ur vids.very helpful.i have a 95 astro cpi..and my van was blogging Everytime i try to touch the gas pedal.to the point it actually will stall if u try to give it gas.so i changed the spider (250$) and the fuel lines.(40$) and put a new gasget.and its still doing the same thing..any idea what else it could be? Full pump goes on,i can hear it.i replaced a map sensor,tps,iac,and a bunch of other bs,and the damn van starts and idles great,but as soon as u touch the gas paddle it wants to die.cant even put it in drive because it pops and spudders like crazy..what the heck can it be? I bought the van from a friend because he couldn't figure it out either.when i got it from him it was missing the map sensor,so i replaced that first because he took it off then miss placed it..lol..and like i said,ive put all new parts and sensors in top the intake and still boggs and stalls..i also has the timing done.still boggs down.it only has 92,000 original miles.changed all 6 spark plugs,new wires,cap an rotor...so what else can it be??? Any help or ideas u have,please,id greatly appreciate it..its driving me nuts because its in mint condition,all custom interior,45 inch plazma,22 inch rims,body kit,freshly painted paint job..and its just sitting in my driveway collecting dust ...im going nuts with this thing!! LOL it kills me to walk by this beautiful van every morning and not be able to drive it...please help! Thanks bud..😀

David Maher Fuel pump leaking at sending unit. If you top off the tank and the bogging seems to go away that is it

David Maher If it gets worse ask the tank gets close to empty that is it. The new non AC Delco fuel pumps come with plastic hose clamps that leak under high pressure. Not so bad at first but give them about six months and they start. (its the pump to sending unit hose clamps that leak) Replace them with metal clamps and you will be amazed at how much better it runs. The injector will not inject properly unless it gets 55 psi at the regulator. To test this put a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail. It should hit at least 55 psi with the key in the run position and hold it after you turn the key to the off position for more than sixty seconds. If the pressure falls off rapidly its the clamps, or leak somewhere in the system.

local701​ and i forgot to tell u my fuel gauge is stuck in the full position i dont know if that has anything to do with it its only got 10 dollars in it but its reading full. Would that have anything to do with a bad sending unit.

If you'd stripped that torx bolt, you'd have had to taken off the whole lower intake.
