On October 1st, 1962, Johnny Carson hosted his first episode of The Tonight Show and began his incredible 30 year reign as the King of Late Night! To celebrate this remarkable milestone we will be posting classic first appearances for the entire month of October. Happy Anniversary Johnny!
Today I saw the Carson exhibit at the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York. It was fascinating. Congrats to Jeff Sotzing and the others who put together that tribute to the king of Late Night!
Same here. Just love him and miss him and, his whole show. Wish we were able to hear the band more...they were fabulous. I was born in the 50's and grew up watching him.
@@juliedepaolo9971 I grew up in the '50s also and started watching Carson. I started in '72 when 1st in college and continued watching until Johnny retired in '92.
Wow I remember watching this when the program was aired. I was home on leave from the Marine Corps. Wish I could go back to the 70s. Great episode thanks.
No matter what I really enjoyed this. Love Johnny and Chase. His wife was so sweet in a pinafore dress. Chevy is a good sport. Both men were respectful to each other and were both funny and entertaining.💖💖
Chevy Chase was the man back then , Fletch and Caddy Shack are two of my favorite movies. Christmas Vacation is also a classic , I love sarcastic humor and he was the king of it!
Man…I miss late night shows like Johnny. Nobody comes close to him, nobody. I miss cuddling up on the couch and watching him with hot cup of tea before going to bed.
A comedy genius who was in some of the biggest and classical comedies such as Under the rainbow, Fletch,Spies like us,Three amigos etc. Chevy chase will always be in the comedy gold hall of fame!!!
@@michaelmohrle1773 I know that was a great double bill! I was actually referring to Under the rainbow as the movie i always loved. To be honest i never got into Private Benjamin but i do like Goldie hawn, great actress!
I grew up with Johnny Carson. And my Dad would love to watch the monologue before he went to sleep. But come to find out. He had a tragic life. Reading it hear on FV his mom was never Satisfied with his accomplishments. He made so much money & some was somewhat invested incorrectly. He had 3three boys. And one passed away tragically in an accident. He had a drinking problem (who doesn't in Showbusiness?) And was a bit frugal. They he would not make small talk to guests between commercial breaks. I am not judging this was on F.V. here on YT. But we all loved his persona & enthusiasm to entertain us & make us laugh & a great interviewer for all of us who were infatuated with the next latest great "Celebrity". God Bless You Johnny RIP🙏❤ We will always love you forever.
@@dauntae24 I heard that from Joan Rivers. Not even (for example) how is Melissa? They knew eachother very well. I could understand a "Celebrity" he never met. Let me tell you I got all this from "Facts Verse" here on RU-vid (look it up). And I will never understand how he blew up after Joan Rivers accepted her own show on Fox. And called to tell him & he would not pick up the phone? Why was that? A Woman has a right to move up to bigger & better opportunities when they are presented. Which of course is harder especially for a "Female Comedian". And he got upset with "John Davidson" also. Why? They have to stay put. And be at his "Beck & Call" indefinitely till he can tell them they can leave? You know Doc Severson is still alive in his 90s. I think 95yrs young. Don't get me wrong I loved Johnny Carson. And couldn't wait to see my favorite stars. In High School I had the 2second shift from 12pm to 5pm. That is why I could stay up to see them. I am a "Baby Boomer" born 1960. So when I watched it was taped the same day. And shown at night. Of course I remember more from the 70s on till the end 90s!❤
He didn't have a tragic life , he was an introvert though and did lose his son. Yes it's true he didn't have a good relationship with his kids , but that was his own doing. I would say he had relationship problems obviously , since he was married 4 times.
BACKSTORY: If there appears to be some awkwardness between Chase and Carson it was likely due to a New York Magazine cover story from 1975 proclaiming Chase to be the funniest man in America, where an NBC exec said he'd be the likely successor to Carson---AND would start guest hosting in 6 months! Chase dismissed the rumors saying he could never be tied down for 5 years interviewing TV personalities. Kind of a snipe at Carson. Carson subsequently said that Chase couldn't ad-lib a fart after a baked bean dinner.
Carson was by far superior to Chase. Chase could be funny in the right role but otherwise I find him underwhelming. Beyond that I've heard nothing bad things about him as a person. Alternatiely, pretty much everything people have said about Johnny was overwhelmingly good.
They both had tons of controversy in their careers. Not sure where you have been reading about carson because he was a well known difficult human who was not great to his partners. Chase is also known as a dickhead!@OnizukaSenseSay
May 5th 1977, 🤔 to be sitting by the pool at 11 with our bikes chained to the fence. We rode everywhere, the bowling alley to play some arcade games, to the pizza place, on and on damn I miss it.
It's obvious how uncomfortable Chevy is. They brought him out to promote his upcoming special. He wasn't prepared for any of the questions Johnny was going to ask. If you're familiar with that time. Most folks felt Chevy just got too big for his britches. He left Saturday night because he felt he was somehow movie star material.
I don't know ... I guess I'm in the minority. I feel like Chevy took a big swing and a miss here. A lot of his little quips and side comments fell flat. Felt kinda stilted, wooden. Felt like they couldn't get a rhythm.
I loved him at the time because we were told we had to behave & never get out of line, and Chevy Chase rarely behaved & was nearly always out of line. So naturally, I adored him.
Some context here - Johnny's contract was ending and there was a lot of rumor that Chevy would be replacing Johnny. There is another video on youtube where Richard Pryor comes on after Chevy and mocks Chevy in defense of Johnny about when Chevy is going to take over (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t7c8bKw2W8g.html). JohnnY thought Chevy was unproven but the NBC Execs wanted to take advantage of the popularity Chevy at that time coming off SNL. Source was from Henry Bushkin's book 'Johnny Carson'
Much the same they wanted to capitalize on Conan O'Brien's and Jimmy Fallon's Late Night popularity in trying to replace Jay Leno. Conan got the short end of the stick, but (sadly) Fallon was in the right place at the right time with the rise of RU-vid and viral performance bits.
When I do my videos lately and I feel myself about to say um I think about Chevy Chase and Laugh. There was an episode on community when he was trying to teach Yvette Nichole Brown how to do a speach and every time she says um he says, " UM, UM, UM really loud and in her face. It makes me laugh to myself all the time.
I'm sure I watched this when it aired. My parents thought that wide lapels were revolting, which Carson demonstrated night after night in this era. Ditto the disco uniforms and leisure suits of the same era. Chase came from East Coast money and breeding, and thus seemed to know how to pick out a good suit. He was even self-conscious about his tie, which was in very good taste, unlike the super-wide versions worn by Carson.
Wow, talk about burying the lead. You have one talk show and comedic legend here (Carson), and one arrogant cokehead who didn't have the ability to be the least bit funny without a script (Chase), and you choose to focus on their clothes? Something tells me that the genius of Johnny Carson is totally lost on you.
@@watchman1178 Last I looked, all are free to comment about any aspect of a posted video. I watched Carson every night from 1969 'til the end. I've watched every SNL from the second week it aired through last season (the NBC affiliate in Albany where I was visiting on 10/11/75 did not pick up the show 'til later). The so-called genius, or lack thereof, of these 2 individuals is not lost on me.
It was actually about the entire Not Ready For Prime Time Players at the time, not just Chevy. and it was from a quote Carson gave to Tom Shales of The Washington Post for an article he was doing. SNL retaliated however by doing some snipes back at Carson on later shows after on Weekend Update, one being that Carson was kicking around the idea of perhaps maybe doing HIS show live and Jane Curtin, anchorwoman on WU at the time, said that was a good thing, since he had been "doing the Tonight Show dead for the past fifteen years."
@@michaelp3934 It's a little known fact that Johnny wrote the line for Dan Aykroyd in the Debate with Jane Curtain on Weekend Update ; *"JANE YOU IGNORANT SLUT"* 😀 It's little known because I just made it up.
Chase spent literally 2 minutes rambling on, describing how to set up a scenario for a pratfall which made no sense and seemed like 5 minutes, then did his pratfall in 5 seconds. What made his movies so successful were good writers, who wrote comedic scenes tailored to Chase’s style of comedy.
They forgot about Dick Van Dyke who was fantastic with using his body, pratfalls, dancing or just being silly in skits! I think he could hold a candle to the gentleman that they mentioned! God Bless Dick Van Dyke!! ❤️
Johnny was always so decent to his guests, that Midwest upbringing, I guess. Today, if someone said their wife was in the audience, you'd hear a string of sneering jokes. That's what separated this show, it was always a class act.
Chevy has never been great on talk show appearances. He’s def nervous here . But I did enjoy the physical comedy segment I felt like he was more comfortable.
I'd say you had him pegged pretty well. When the Friars Club roasted Chevy back in the early 2000's, almost none of his peers agreed to participate. Chase was said to be very upset by this, but apparently he's such a narcissist that he never realized that most people in the entertainment industry couldn't stand him. I was always Team Bill Murray, who replaced Chase on SNL after Season 1 when Chase left to go to Hollywood. Murray & Chase always had a rivalry of sorts, although I've heard that they patched up their differences.
Chevy Chase is a great comedic actor and writer, but he is not at all witty. Every interview like this I see him in, he attempts to make little quips that almost always fall flat.
🤔 There’s something missing from your comment. It seems like you’re answering a question that no one asked. I imagine the question might have been something like, why did Chevy Chase leave SNL? But I’m just guessing.
@@vladtheimpala5532 since you’re confused, I’m gonna clear your confusion I read the biography of the cast members of SNL and what they thought about each other, and he was the most hated member, as a matter of fact, the producer of the show Lorne Micheal had to separate Bill Murray from beating him up. Is there anything else would you want me to clear read the biography of SNL
