Met Bill at the DGA-W 57th - an internship I was then doing for Nancy Littlefield. -unbelievable kindness towards me. Bought me up to his office, intro'd me around - etc. Me I was so intimidated I could barely speak - it wasn't planned - just kind of organically happened. .
Aykroyd was and ALWAYS be the king of SNL. He cherishes the time he spent on that show and truly understands what that show and that comedy has meant to the world. There are plenty of people out there who became huge who kinda shrug off where they got their start, like Eddie Murphy for example.
The racial humor with Garrett in the original cast was classic. He was willing to do some really edgy stuff that could never be done today. The prison auditions and the interview with Julian Bond come to mind.
Though not a cast member, I can’t help but thinking of Steve Martin during that era of SNL. Before Borat there were the Czechoslovakian Studs: we are two wild and crazy guys.
Martin was a uniquely gifted talent. A hero of comedy back when I was in high school... it's hard to believe he's pushing 80 now. There were other 'funny guys', and all of them good. But Martin was different. He was the first comic that I can remember filling Huge auditoriums, like a rock star. He wasn't mocking politicians, or saying "My wife's cooking is so bad... " he was Fresh.. Original.. and damn funny, without being graphic. (Not that there's anything wrong with that, but some use it as a crutch.) If there's a Mt. Rushmore of comedy.. he ought to be on it.
Garrett Morris is comedy genius in this, he had me in stitches! He's still got it at 80 years old! He was always great in the original series like he is here, great edgy comedy.
What had me smirking is that you could tell that he didn't tell the others he was going to do that skit.....look at Akroyds face right behind him....he was really wondering where he was going with that....until he got to the punch line.
I remember when Chevy left after Caddy shack because he thought he was going to be this big time movie star. Then he made a few flops. Then finally the Vacation movies. But now he is by far the biggest flop of the cast. Because he still thought of himself as Chevy Chase. When now he's just chevy chase.
Love Aykroyd and Murray, they seem like real genuine nice people, love their work on SNL and through their movies. Ghost Busters, Trading Places, the Great Outdoors, etc
I've always considered Bill Murray a part of the original cast, even though he wasn't. I'm glad they let him stand at the mic as well. He certainly made his mark in SNL history. I love the heck out of Bill Murray's twitter zingers! The man is non-stop wit! I consider him a guru of sorts.
He also had an illustrious movie career. He did “meatballs “ and a whole bunch of other hilarious movies. He also was good in serious sort of roles. “ Groundhog Day” is a classic movie.
He auditioned with that cast and worked with almost all of them before the show started. He missed the first year and then was around for the next four with all but Chevy. I consider him an original cast member, too. I think most everybody does.
He was part of the original auditions, but was passed on because they didn't want three "bad" boys with Aykroyd Belushi and Murray. They got them a year later!
@@Ram44 Murray actually joined the cast in 1977....after the Christmas break of season 2... But Murray WAS the first of all them to star on "Saturday Night Live"....bit tricky that one...
Garrett Morris's first name has two t's in it and you need to put an "n" in the word "damn". Delete your comment and re-post it so "Garrett" and "damn" are spelled correctly! ~Dutch
@@kipclark1 You meant to say "Please realize that grammar and spelling mean nothing in the modern information highway." In the word "realize" there is a "z" and not an "s". You didn't spell grammar correctly either. It's spelled "G-R-A-M-M-A-R" not "G-R-A-M-M-E-R". You need to put a second "l" in the word "spelling" and where the hell did you come up with "doodly"? That's not even a word! Replace it with "nothing" because it sounds more mature. Then finally, "highway" is spelled "H-I-G-H-W-A-Y" and not "H-I-W-A-Y". Fix your comment! The way I see it, grammar is extremely important regardless of where you are typing! ~Dutch
Bill Murray, singing as a lounge singer and he makes Star Wars a song. I thought that was funny as hell. And I still do. Doing it in Lounge singer Style.
As far as I'm concerned Murray deserves to be on that stage just as much as Chevy. He was there for ONE season and left. Bill Murray came in and more than filled that void, in my opinion.
@@rudyfat7073 so the world should agree with your opinion ? You are wrong and lubbylove is right. Murray deserved to be in the snl hall of fame instead of Chevy.
This award is for the original crew of SNL. Bill Murray was not on the original crew. Of course Murray deserves to be in the hall of fame duh but you guys keep missing what the award is towards. We might as well throw in Eddie Murphy who had a bigger impact than Murray on SNL.
Did ANYONE go out on Saturday nights before that weeks show was finished? I looked forward to the next show from Sunday to Saturday every single week. You always knew whatever they did was going to be spot on and hilarious! Part of their gift was in how even the audience felt like they were along for the ride right along with them. Good, good times.
No one will ever top the 'Not Ready For Prime-Time Players'. What a talented group of performers. Gilda was my favorite... what an amazing and talented woman she was... RIP Gilda and John, you are sadly missed. "That's the NEWS. Good night and have a pleasant tomorrow..." Chevy Chase - SNL 1975-1976.
Absolutely graciously proud of his cohearts. Bill Murray supporting them should always in turn be supported for making SNL an iconic part of history, not just comedy, but contiues to Pioneer in television and film today.
They were the originals - the foundation from which SNL was built and the recognition is long overdue. This talented group created the blueprint that many others would follow for decades to come. They were fearless, groundbreaking and so damn funny. We as viewers salute and thank you for all your work. Generations of future comedians will owe you that debt of gratitude for opening the doors and showing that comedy could be edgy and cool.......
Yet they werent quite as brilliant as Monty Python, especially Cleese,Palin and Idle. that is the gold standard. they paid a huge complement to Ackyroyd and said he would be the one SNLer that would fit in with Python.
@@RobertMartin-et9nj John Belushi wasn't a kind person during most of his tenure on SNL. Sure he may have started out that way, but he turned into a horrible sexist half way through season 1 who believed women weren't naturally funny like men where and as a result spent his time sabatoging sketches written by the women.
@@IanPunter- Comparing Python and SNL is like comparing apples and oranges. One is British, one is American. One was pre taped, one is done live. One had an all white male cast. The other one did not. Aside from the fact that they are both sketch comedy based, that's pretty much where any similarity ends.
Bill Murray is such an amazing person, I have always said he is one of the 5 people I would want to meet before I die. He seems so fun and down to earth and humble and genuine. I just love and adore him. ❤
Sad to lose gilda and john. Show changes every year, thanks to celebrities who are committed to keep it going. I hope it never goes off the air. I could name a few I'd like to see come back, but just honored and blessed I had this show during my generation
I honestly didn't know how many were still alive. What a delight to see them all still with us and what a well deserved induction. Many of us were a part of their time frame and kept us laughing on Saturday Night Live then the movies and TV appearances and comedy shows. Each of their Hall of Fame speeches still contain the humor and Class they are known for! I'm sure the Organizers had their criteria but you can feel the pain in the honest speech of Bill Murray. Thank you All and the late John Belluci and Gilda Radner for bringing laughter to our teen and young adult lives 🤣😁😊👍🏼
They knew they had it from the jump. Knew it was the right show at the right time. Show just oozed with Swag and Confidence. Drawing all the then college kids from across the East Coast. Who'd never before even CONSIDERED a job writing comedy. SNL an Arnold and a Sly in its' own right. A philosophy. A religion. Comedy is a Religion.
Hearing Chevy say that he made a big mistake leaving SNL is kinda sweet. He's known for having a high opinion of himself, so hearing him admit that he was wrong is like peak character development for Chevy. Right on. Also, 100% the sweetest that every person up there mentioned John and Gilda. There's a lot of love up on that stage.
When the show came on, my husband and I, and my brother in laws would come over, smoke weed and laugh our butts out..so much fun. I loved the original cast including Bill Murray.
1975 I was 18 ...stayed up late on Saturday night for years ...as years went and kids came along I missed many shows...now with youtube I get to watch recent shows and just as then the comics are the best! :)
Couldn't agree more! Absolutely love and loved Dana! He, in my opinion, was so much more talented that Mike and I still don't know how Mike blew up and Dana didn't.
1975....I was in 4th or 5th grade and NOT allowed to stay up or watch SNL. I remember one night, I heard from my room that SNL was on. I snuck down quietly downstairs, ,sat down without anyone seeing me, and caught a snippet of the show. I thought I was so cool to have seen that. I have enjoyed SNL through the years. Some more, some not. I am impressed with the current cast. Everyone has a special talent, and I am glad the show is still airing.
SNL has brought so much joy to my life and continues to bring joy to my life. I'm greatful to you all. I was six yrs old in 1975 and watched it with my big brother Mike. I continue to watch to this day. Thank you so much.
Honoring SNL without Bill Murray is like honoring Knots Landing or Dynasty without Donna Mills or Joan Collins only because they weren't part of the original cast. They made those shows.
@@analogkid4957 "Bill took SNL to another level." Nope. Not in any way. He wasn't the guy who made Stripes yet, let alone Ghostbusters, he got funnier over the years.
These men & women of the original cast (+Murray!) have some way inspired every comedian alive today, and those comedians will influence future comedians, and so on. That means, what they did on SNL and their shows/films will be embedded forever in comedy itself. They ARE comedy :)
So crazy seeing how old they’ve all gotten. Time flies. And growing up watch those guys and how hilarious they were and still are. Hope they ha e a lot of years ahead of them
Oct 11, 1975. I had turned 16 the week before and SNL became the touchstone for my young generation. I could write pages about what these cast members and the show meant to us over the years, but I will simply say Bravo! Or as General Francisco Franco might say, "Bravissimo!" (from beyond).
Thanks for the memories. Saturday Night Live was an integral part of my newlywed year and as things were bustling going forward. I remember showing my daughter a cartoon caricature of Chevy Chase which appeared in a National Lampoon magazine in that era and she, being perhaps fourteen months old, opened her mouth wide to mimic the image. My wife saw it too and we just stood there in amazement.
It’s true that John and Gilda brought the danger to the show with what they were willing to do. It’s a shame what they suffered with. I wish they were both here today. So glad this cast was given this honor. They had to take their humble experience of improv and the influence of Monty Python and Laugh-In, and create a whole new experience…on live TV!!
....and he was a GREAT singer. Any bits where he had to sing - including, and especially, opera - were great. He was great at nailing the idioms of any style, and in a comedic way. I just rewatched the first four seasons. There's a bit where he's doing a show tune based on Charles Manson's obsession with The White Album, specifically Revolution #9, it's so hilarious I can't even tell you, I crack up just THINKING about that bit. And the song is IN 9/4. He's singing in an odd time signature, and nailing it.
I wish Garrett Morris had been on more stuff over the years... ya would see him pop up here n there... but not nearly enough... he is one funny mama jama
That was because he was like that's era's Keanen in the since that doing SNL wasn't a launching pad or first major break for him, but another significant notch on his already lustrious acting belt, not to mention, like he said, he was at least 15 years older than the rest of the original cast.
Laraine Newman looks so much more lovely now than she did back then. Great upload! I used to play out in a band and missed an awful lot of the Saturday Night shows. Well, it's been 40+ years...Gotta see if there's somewhere that has all those old programs!
That was the perfect time to grow up. I couldn't ask for a better time in history. We had SNL , and Rock Concerts . There's no other time in history or since like the 60's 70's and 80's. And there's never been a better cast than the original with Bill Murray. I didn't think I would ever get to 18 years old, then the last 40 years is a blur that I feel like I was in suspended animation. Whoosh. Seems like yesterday the show would come on and Chevy Chase would be behind the news desk talking dirty with a girl on the phone unaware the news had went live and he's famous words I'm Chevy Chase and you're not.
