Chevy Equinox P0172 How To Replace High Pressure Fuel Pump

If you guys have code P0172 or are having drivability issues or even spelling has outside or inside your oil, you might have a faulty high pressure fuel pump. In this video we show you guys how to easily replace the pump along with the fuel pressure line. This is for Chevy Equinox with the 2.4 ecotec engine. Hope this helps and good luck!

Will replacing this part fix my low power mode problem? Goes it to low power mode mechanic said code was fuel injected pump

Yes this will fix that issue as well if the code is related to the fuel pump.

Im about to do this same job. Do you have any reccomendations on how to remove the fuel line without the tool for the prongs?

It’s going to be pretty difficult without the tool I would just go buy the tool at any autozone or Orielly’s. It’s not that expensive and it’ll save you the headache. Good luck!

I have a 2014 3.6l LT Flex and the code that comes up is P228C it keeps putting my car in reduced power to engine.Should I replace whole pump? And if so do i need a line as well? Thank you for the video still learning and on a strict budget

Yes it looks like you’re having issues with the fuel pressure and most likely the mechanical fuel pump is going to be your problem. It’s recommended to replace the line too but you can re use it as well it you’d like just make sure it’s tight enough so it doesn’t leak.

Most likely to fix your issue you will need this pump as well unless you have an issue in the wiring. Good luck!

I saw another video on this and they did a camshaft adjustment. Is that not a necessary thing? Mine is a 2011 model.

Thanks for the video. Did you have to bleed the fuel line first before removing it?

You don’t have to. Just slowly unscrew the fuel line and wait for all the fuel to leak out and that’ll release all the pressure in there. Good luck!

No this won’t cause it but these engines are known to burn a lot of oil

Do you need to replace the cam follower when you're leaking gas into your oil? Mine is getting the "P0172 - system too rich bank 1" and is dieseling when you shut it off. I ordered a new pump and new line but no cam follower. I also ordered a "High-Pressure Fuel Pump Installer EN-48896" because a different video said i needed one to line up the camshaft before installing the new pump, but you didn't use one at all. So did I just waste $55 on some bogus tool that resembles a butt plug?

lol that’s the way to do it if you’re doing it by the book. You’re suppose to put the butt plug in there and rotate the crankshaft clockwise until it sits flush. Otherwise you can stick your finger in there on the cam follower and rotate the crankshaft until it goes all the way down and stop rotating when you feel it starting to come back up. As far as the cam follower if you’re able to locate one easily I would replace it while you’re there otherwise if not no big deal.

Ive replaced this, both fuel pressure sensors, cleaned injectors, replaced MAF, CAT and the damn car still wants to shut off when its in drive. If i put it in Neutral, the car runs fine. IDK what else to do.

It can be your fuel pump

Any idea if the p0172 would cause the p0420 code for bank 1?

No this won’t cause the p0420 that’s separate and you’ll need a catalytic converter for that and alot of times the exhaust manifold cracks on them too which you will find out once you take the heat shield off it when doing the catalytic converter

@acetechauto7 so I just replaced exhaust manifold bc of a crack after redoing timing...car is running fine, but then got p0172 and p0420 at the same time...I should replace the high pressure pump right to correct p0172, right? P0420 still a separate issue?

@Father_Adrian try clearing the codes first and see if they come back. If they do then most likely you’ll need the high pressure fuel pump and a catalytic converter.

@acetechauto7 gotcha! Appreciate the advice! 1 more thing, I saw someone mention the butt plug tool thing lol, I don't have that, so am I able to install just as you did and have everything line up properly? I dont want to mess up anything Internal
