This is the full blown Stage IV Max Street porting of the LT-1 Cross-Flow Cylinder Head. Part One....In this we cover the begining to end of unshrouding and polishing the combustion chambers. Thanks to Tom Kish for the use of his heads and the extra time he allowed for me to film and perform these mods, and his permission to display his heads and work performed. This procedure removed 3cc of material, and blended the chambers to discourage detonation. This is part one of three of mods to turn a stock 170cc LT-1 heads into Edelbrock, AFR killers. The valve size remains the stock 1.94 and 1.50 sizes. To follow more go to www.headbytes.com 615-212-7168

Thanks, I am 52 and I don't want to take it to my grave after the price I paid in life to learn this. NO BOOKS, NO ONE TALKES ABOUT IT (when I done it).

I CC one or Two chambers and intake and exhaust ports. My math procedure is so accurate it never fails. When I do a Stage IV, I shoot of the hip with 3 or 4 pick up points (the points where I measure to assure consistency) Time is my enemy here, and I have to look at the money I got for the job. On a V, it is done every .300 through the ports, hence the expense.

I watched this video of a guy trying to explain how to gasket match ports, it took him 15 minutes to use his magic marker to mark up one port. I left a comment for him that he should of used a bigger magic marker. I watch his video now and then when I need a good laugh.

Yeah, that valve design on BBC is just brilliant! Thank you for your reply. I have some Audi 20V 5cyl head on my table and want to add some squish areas and pretty much improve overall burn process. I consider this head to be somewhat stupid in design, because it has a huge volume of CC way away from the plug. And a small quench, while it could have few! So I needed your re-explanation of that. Sometimes we need to blend our thoughts as well! Thanks!

I am honored, really guys. Hey, if you have any burned up rods laying around that you was going to through away, I use the aluminum to pour cross-overs in my old heads (to fill the cross over path to stop the exhaust gasses from heating up the manifold). If you sent them to me, I would send the cash to cover your shipping cost. About 10 or so would be GREAT. Thanks and I plan on doing a let before the end of the year.

Ive been following these videos since the start of my lt1 heads! The end result is amazing but im not quite finished yet, I was so far off in the videos I posted on my channel but when I visited your website I was able to see it all in detail and its getting better! Thanks for the tutorial! Im shooting for 400 hp with a 231/239 cam and full bolt ons!

Uh huh! That's an interesting point on that hump near plugs. My friend once brought me LT1 head, so that I could advise him something. Yet there were not many things that's possible to do with the intake port (w/ no epoxy or welding), so all I could advise him were those ridges around the seats and wavy hump around the plug. Anyway, I think that if you could WELD that hump into a flat surface, you could get a second squish area and improve swirl inside the chamber. Correct me if I'm wrong! Thx!

Yeah, I understand that as an aim to have the shortest possible flame travel distance in all 3 dimensions, i.e. inside the volume. Thanks!

One thing you need to know about this is S/V ratio, or the ratio of the burn rate known as Surface to Volume ratio. This determines the effectiveness of the burn in the chamber. I believe it goes like this: the less surface of the chamber to the volume of the bore means it burns more effectively. For example the Chevy 18 degree heads have a LOW S/V ratio, making it a high quench head that burns like no tomorrow. remember that NO combustion chamber is a great combustion chamber in terms of BOTH

Continued from DoriFord comment below: That being said, the quench effect has several major benefits for sure (Less Timing required to achieve max horsepower, the engine runs COOLER for sure, Throttle response in greatly enhanced, and compression is increased); however you can only compress what is sent in through the intake cycle I the first place so I would say (and this is my opinion) that first and foremost Air-Flow is king (or C.S.A.). The problem with too much quench is valve shrouding.
@HeadPorting
@HeadPorting 11 лет назад
Part III of Quench: The problem of quench is, like I said above is Valve Shrouding. I know you herd of the "CURTIN" of the valve, well there it is (or in this case, is not!!!). The valve on any head has to have a certain amount of "Curtin" to let the air/fuel charge exit around the valve. That is why the BBC is such a bad ass head, because of the canted valve rocks in terms of unshrouding the valves as it moves toward the center of the chamber once it leaves the seat. The best is a good mix here

And blacktop has more power than silvertop. Of course, there were some other mods, but the engineers were crazy about quench area back then. Possibly, you get pretty big flow numbers with 3 valves on the intake, so you can sacrifice that a bit for smaller CC and faster burn. Just google it, it's an interesting evolution of one head. Both engines were available in a period 1992-1997, mostly in Japan.
@DoriFord
@DoriFord 11 лет назад
Haha, thanks for your reply! In terms of whether airflow or quench, you choose airflow? You know, there is an interesting point on CCs on Toyota 4AGE 20V engine. There were 2 versions called Silvertop and Blacktop. S-top was the first gen for 20V inline-4 engine, both came with individual throttle bodies from the factory. The main difference is CC design. Silvertop has an opened chamber with small quench, Blacktop has more squish than any other engine I've ever seen. Might impede flow a bit!

There is a LOT of companies that claim BBFTW to be head porters, but I would be nice in saying that out of 100 MAYBE 3 of them are "CUTTERS" that is a slang that our beloved "Mondello, Sheperd, Glidden" and other guys used to call people like me. Were the last of our kind. I claim to be no better than the next guy, but what I am saying is "you have to cut the shit out of them and remove CSA to make them work, period". It is all about CSA, you need sonic testing stuff, and math to do it. Thanks
@HeadPorting
@HeadPorting 11 лет назад
Hell Yes!!! your exactly RIGHT. I love quench, and IF it does not impede airflow then squeeze that bitch till she screams......Right On DoriFord...May the force be with you, always..
@HeadPorting
@HeadPorting 11 лет назад
That would be race only, with epoxy on top of the runners, and probably around $1200.00. IT MIGHT be able to street, it would depend on the Sonic Test...

If you take metal out of the bowls, aren't you increasing/gaining CCs of chamber volume? You said you were going to lose a couple CCs. Great video.

wow!! Woyuld love for you to do that to my heads (94 Chevy 9C1 police Intercepter--LT1 350) have the heads port matched with my Hooker headers which are ceramic coated, need a good cam and lifters, push rods and roller rocker arms and need to add 100hp to the rear wheels, using 3.42's and 245-60 R15 tires. Using a H-pipe and 3 chamber mufflers too. Car will be used mainly for long distance cruising and occasional drag racing-about 4 times a year, bracket quarter mile racing.
