Chevy Nova Floor Pan Patches

The $5000 Chevy Nova build gets floor pan patches. I cut the old floor until I got mostly good metal, then I cut the pieces i needed out of my floor halves. I overlapped them instead of butt welding because it is easier, faster, and lets be honest, it is just fine on a build of this quality. I'll get them cleaned and sealed, painted for next video. Also I spent another $390 on floor patches, leaf spring shackles, and factory style transmission lines. So now we are around $2200 into our budget.

I just inherited a 1970 Nova in fairly decent condition. Its been in the family for 51 years. It has barely moved since 1987, so it needs a real goin' through. Watching your videos is great inspiration. Thanks !

I'm glad I watched this again. I think instead of putting the entire pans in my 72 I'll just cut out where is actually rotted, and patch those pieces in. Yours came out great!

Would have it been easier to put in the whole floor instead of patches? I know it would cost a lot more
@Shop209
@Shop209 2 года назад
Kinda but not really. The part of the floor that connects to the trunk floor is a pain but mainly it’s the torque boxes that the front of the leaf springs mount to. Getting them off old floor and re welded to the new floor is a ton of work. Definitely a better result though.
@MikeWolf-427
@MikeWolf-427 Год назад
Thank you for this build and your channel. In the video you said the pans were welded in about 70%. Did you seam seal over those welds or did you finish around all the pans 100% and then seam seal? I'm sorry I didn't understand it. I just bought a very clean 69 with a copo 427 swapped in it. I haven't found any rust yet but I also haven't looked, :)
@Shop209
@Shop209 Год назад
I didn’t weld all the way around. I put stitch welds about an inch long all the way around. Then seam sealed. It’s not a lot of work to go ahead and weld completely but I figure when I’m finally finished with this project whoever ends up with it might want to put in a new floor.

Learning a lot from your videos. Two questions for you on this. One, what brand of rust converter do you use or recommend and two, are you cutting the patch pans to the opening and butt welding or are you overlapping the old and new and then welding? Thanks a million
@Shop209
@Shop209 Месяц назад
Thanks. I’m isinglass rustoleum rust reformer. It works great. On floor pans and trunk pans I’m leaving an overlap on the panels. You can butt weld but it takes a ton more time to get panel fitted close enough and the patch panels aren’t exact.

Like you said, it is better to fix, some of the rust, from further rusting away,.it is not going to be a show car, unless you are prepared to spend $$$$' to make that car look like new.

Quick question I see that you have welded in a front floor patch pan on the passenger side How did you attach the side of the Pan onto the rocker did you just cut the edge off and weld it to the existing piece of metal that was on the rocker how did you attach it Or did you cut the flange off the rocker side and go under the car and plug weld it back on the rocker how did you do it?
@Shop209
@Shop209 Год назад
There was still good metal from the floor pan on the rocker. I left about 1/4”.
@texasgarage145
@texasgarage145 Год назад
@@Shop209 Yes thank you very much for the reply I wasn't sure if I was going to crawl under the car and try to plug well that flange back to the rocker because the piece of metal that's attached to my rocker the Flange is still in good shape so I just wanted to see if somebody else just cut their flange off their new piece and welded it back to the existing flange on the rocker , good stuff !! I think I'm gonna don't it that way myself ,just seems way easier to do it that way then to crawl under the car to try to weld it with the subframe in the way

@@Shop209 Hey what's going on man I took your advice and I trimmed just the flange right at the bend so I can reweld it to the existing flange on my rocker anyhow I got a RU-vid channel the videos aint very long they're not as good as yours but it's called Texas garage you can take a look at the floor Pan if you wish alright Brother thank you Is for your help

What rust converter do you use?
@Shop209
@Shop209 2 года назад
Depends on what I’m doing but usually rustoleum rust reformer. It converts the rust to iron phosphate. Then I paint over it.
@stoneyswolf

It's just a waist of time to patch up a rusty unibody floor car.
@Shop209
@Shop209 2 года назад
I disagree. Some people just want to get an old car patched up good enough to enjoy driving it. That’s the point of this build. Thanks for watching though.
@stoneyswolf
@stoneyswolf 2 года назад
@@Shop209 they say these old cars are a rich man's hobby and it's kinda true that way. The main market for these cars are guys like me who grew up in the 80s and will spend the money for a clean properly done car or a rust free mid west car.
@Shop209
@Shop209 2 года назад
I have a 69 that I’m doing a “proper” restoration on. All new panels and will have zero rust when it’s complete. I will have close to 1200 hours in it when done. Some people just want a $7500 car that looks cool. It’s ok that what you want is different but I don’t consider it a waste of time to patch a car up instead of making every inch new again.
