We are replacing the rear differential components in a Chevrolet Silverado with the 8.6” rear differential. The Chevy Silverado came to us, because it had an issue where differential grinding noises could be heard. We found that the differential pinion nut was loose and made the pinion, and pinion preload very loose. This was why the customer could the grinding and scraping noises inside the differential. We Hope you enjoy the video and be sure to subscribe, like, and comment.

I'm trying to learn from your video if I can do the following thing. I'm buying a used GM IFS7.6 and will disassemble it for inspection. If all races and bearings are good, what steps do I follow to get the pinion back in. Working with a real small budget here. Thanks.

Judging by the dumped glass pack muffler, I'd be willing to bet that diff had a hard life. Lol😊

I have a 06 Silverado 2wd n when I was doing a burn out it made a loud noise n it make a sorta grinding noise when I make left turn mostly what could it be
@axleoffroad
@axleoffroad 4 месяца назад
Sounds like the differential spider gears are toast or damaged!
@kellismith4329

If you are gonna do burnouts you need to build a bulletproof differential none of them will last for that use
@KhrisAllen-jt7qo
@KhrisAllen-jt7qo 3 месяца назад
Well you most definitely tore up the spider gears and are just lucky one wheel is still pulling . U also could have busted something in the tail of transmission

So why not just tighten up pinion nut and shim the carrier left to right to tighten it up, add new gear oil? It did not fail, why replace everything?

Im curious about this as well. I have an 04 Silverado z71 and open my rear differential because I suspected the grinding noise was coming form there. It looks the exact same as this one? Could I just tighten the bolt? Since I don't have the time or tools to do this.

I have a 2016 Sierra and whenever I put it in gear or give it gas a lot of times it slams forward. It seems like it does while shifting gears, but it’s even slammed forward while sitting still like someone rear ended me. I have seen it do it while standing outside of truck also. Any thoughts on this? Could it be the rear end?
@axleoffroad
@axleoffroad 4 месяца назад
If it slams like that, that’s sounds more like the transmission, But that’s just an opinion based on information given.

I have a question I changed all bearings on my rear end and it's still making humming noise idk what it could be.
@axleoffroad
@axleoffroad Месяц назад
Humming is a noise generated from a bearing. It could be that if the pinion bearing was changed, the pinion nut was over torqued.

My GMC 1500 was struck from behind while parked in the garage. Now the right rear wheel is locked up. What did it break? You can jack it up and playing with it get it to turn maybe one turn sometimes before it locks up again
@axleoffroad
@axleoffroad Месяц назад
Sounds like the spider gears, if it’s an open differential. If you have a traction carrier, it could possibly be the clutches. You really will not know until you remove the cover and drain the oil to inspect. Thanks for commenting! 👍🏼
@kb9liq

@@axleoffroad Moved both sides until they spun free. Drained the oil and opened it. Could not see anything broken, every thing turns fine. took it off the stands and it seems to work like it should. Hate to put it all back together and add new oil only to have somebody say we missed something. It is just a normal rear end for a half ton GMC

I may have gotten lost in the sauce. The fix was replacing the bearings and races? What about the damage on the gear? I dont know much about diffs so i am generally curious. I have a similar noise and clunk on my truck. Also how much would this repair cost?

So I have a 2500 1997 Chevy Silverado it has excessive backlash is it possible to use the shim kit and reshim it to take some of the backlash out without having noise or issues?
@axleoffroad
@axleoffroad 3 месяца назад
Yes, when done correctly and providing your pinion has the correct preload. you can shim the carrier, set backlash, and confirm the pattern with gear paint.

Awesome video very detailed and easy to follow My opinion is not that loose at all, I'm having a lot of sound coming from my rear end. It sounds like it's my drive line, right? As it goes to the rear, differenti opened up the pumpkin and it was full of metal, but all the gears look to be okay What would you guys normally charge for a job like that that you did on this truck?

Thank you very much for your informative video. I have a 2011 Chevy Silverada 1500. When I change gears there is a noise in the differential by the shaft. Also the differential moves upward a little bit when I change gears. Any ideas? Do you think I need to rebuild the whole differential or can it just be a gear box? Thank you again.
@axleoffroad
@axleoffroad 5 месяцев назад
It’s hard to diagnose without having it in front of me. Is this a 2wd or 4wd? Sounds like it may be something going on with transmission, Or if it’s a 4wd… could be transfer case. Usually you hear a lot of howling, growling, and chatter noises when it’s failing bearings or differential gears, so that could be easy to eliminate with some basic troubleshooting.
@rsanchez5179
@rsanchez5179 5 месяцев назад
@@axleoffroad It is a 2wd. There is a noise when I change gears. The differential moves a bit upward when shifting gears. But no noise at all while driving.

Been about 25 years since I did a rear end I remember having to get two bearings for the pinion one that you would grind out and slip on so you can put shims when it came to the marking paint you can move it in and out in order to get it to track right then you slap the real bearing on and put it together something like that Tell me what I'm missing...did I miss that in this video?
@axleoffroad
@axleoffroad 9 месяцев назад
Yep, that’s correct. We use setup bearings as a starting point as described. I have other videos that show this.
@MegaBigDe
@MegaBigDe 10 месяцев назад
To someone that has no idea how to backlash what would you suggest?
@axleoffroad
@axleoffroad 10 месяцев назад
First of all, you need a good dial indicator with a bracket and magnetic base to attach firmly to the differential chunk. Second you need to look at either the manufacturer specs of the new gear set you’re installing, or the manufacture of the existing gear set. In order to get proper backlash specs, set the dial indicator up against the gear tooth as seen in many of our other videos and check readout. After that adjust the shims by adding on one side and subtracting on the other in order to gain the correct specs. For more information, subscribe and check out our other videos.

Gm differentials last forever when not abused.
@axleoffroad
@axleoffroad 7 месяцев назад
That, is a false statement and can be misleading to our viewers. We appreciate your opinion, but this statement is untrue. Many things can contribute to issues with a GM differential, when not abused. This includes, but not limited to bearings, seals, gears and other components. This could be a failure in quality control or manufacturing processes. We have worked on many different differentials, and they all had their own story.
